I am considering buying ST1200 and i have a few questions about factory luggage. I have never seen factory luggage in person but on pics, appears to be half decent quality. Main questions are about durability and passenger comfort. In pics I've seen, looks like sidebags could interfere with passenger legs. So if anyone has any experience with the sidebags and a passenger, I would appreciate any feedback. Also I can get factory sidebags with brackets for $880 out the door, seems a lot cheaper than aftermarket stuff. Is that a good price? I would like to be able to remove bags easily and often. Does anyone know how easily the bags come off? :question: I don't like some of the aftermarket because of the metal brackets that remain on the bike after bag removal. Any information on upper box would be appreciated as well. I would like to have a topbox with a backrest for passenger, not sure if factory setup is strong enough for that. Most important question is passenger comfort with factory bags. Sat on bike at dealers and seemed like handlebars were rotated way too far forward, is that a common thing for other people as I feel like I'd have to rotate them back.

I have the Factory bags, Had my Wife on the back for the first time last week. She found the peg position more comfortable than our Streetglide foot boards. No interference with the bags. There is no padding on the front of the Top box and Yamaha at this time do not offer a backrest pad. Easy enough to fabricate. Just attach with Velcro. Plenty of room back there so you could add a 2" pad and not affect Passenger comfort. Bags remove easy and quick. They seem to be sturdy. Report on Web bike world of a Guy who came off at high speed and the bags stayed closed and intact. I got caught out in heavy rain and I did not have any water infiltration. I like them.

Welcome on, broncodave. More of you PA guys. Holy smokes. Must be a conspiracy. ::025:: ::025:: I can't help you with the pannier question. I have aftermarket, and I always ride solo. But many others do, so I'm sure they'll chime in. You might want to consider posting under Member Intros. More Forum members will likely find you that way, and you'll get more responses. Wellcome from another PA rider.

I opted for the OEM topbox since I bought the bike three hours from home and was riding my other out to trade. Figured a 300 bucks topbox was a good stop gap until figured out what kind of panniers to run (and to be able to carry stuff home on the first ride!

I'm guessing that the oem panniers are the same construction as the topbox which means they are made of impact ABS. preety good stuff but the aluminum is more decorative than anything else.

Construction is solid (for plastic) but I can't imagine that the locking mechanism and hinges (also plastic) will hold up like the aftermarket kit. Others here who have run them since 2010 will have better feedback.

Have gotten very good comments from folks who see how the topbox looks...they say it has a "retro" look....i guess that's good.

As for me, based on the plastic OEM setup (locking mechanism) I will go after market and have really taken to the Nomada bags which are imported here in Pitsburgh...pretty darn good price too.

I like my factory side cases quite a bit. I only use them when traveling, but the on-off with the flick of the key has been convenient. The brackets aren't too noticeable with the cases off either. $880 seems to be a pretty decent price for the sides and bracket hardware ($210 under msrp). Don’t think I’ve seen a new set for that low. Click HERE for some more photos and info on the factory sides. I don't do 2upTouring (sounds like you might be), but I think the factory cases might be a little on the small side for that. When I hit the road solo, those cases are full and so is my 33L roll bag.

It's amazing how fast one runs out of room on a bike O0 I used to think about how having the ability to carry about 100liters of 'stuff' would solve most problems..Hah!

it seems like the people who have the factory luggage love them. I honestly love the clean look of the bike when off the bike, and I think they look great on the bike. My only concerns are them being plastic and the fact that I have trips planned to more remove areas, and a fall with them would concern me.

just so you know you can get metal bags and racks for around there and with some companies even less.

::025:: Not on your life. Up until now, I've traveled with nothing more than a Motofizz seat bag and a cargo net for any 'oh by the ways.' I'll happily settle for something a bit more water worthy though. It just amazes me that no matter how minimalist you want to be there are still space challenges. I don't know how the bicycle tourers do it..my hat goes off to them.

Its a MRA VarioTouringScreen Windshield ffrom Twisted Throttle with the thumb bolts from California Scientific. Like it alot.

I rotated my handle bars back. They hit my hands the wrong way in their original position. Don't rotate the instruments. They are pinned by a plastic extension of the housing. I broke one.

My thinking has always been "You expand to the space available". This rule seems to work for cars, motorcycles, houses, just about everything.

Yeah I finally get to try it out with a set of side cases (first bike I've owned with them). Will stick with the Moto-Fizz for awhile as the 'top case.' Just the 60liter Motofizz was doable before, but it took creativity. The new cases are 50+ liters per side, so I really will have neither excuses nor reason to bitch once those are attached.

I think my least favorite part of touring is dirty close management. So much so that I sometimes end up with a lot of new clothing as I 'retire' the old stuff. ::025::
