I thought I remembered some seal doing that to you. Sounds like a pretty good reason to keep the oil changed.

I remember TJ telling me the big seal in the rear was a different part number than the one that originally came on our bikes. Based on Chris' experience I guess the new one is not expected to go much more than 20K miles. My black bike just passed the blue one in mileage a less than 2 weeks ago. It's sitting at 20,300 ish. I'll be watching very closely now.

Chris, I know most normal people leaving for AK next week would still be on the road far after July 11th. So you could get Romney to overnight it to you somewhere. But knowing you, I'm guessing you planned to be back home for 4 or 5 days by July 11th, so that's probably not a workable solution.
Jon, The plan was to leave tomorrow night, ride the bike to Anchorage doing as much exploring along the way as possible, park it at the airport, and fly home. (I have my girls every other week in the summer, and need to be home for them July 5th-12th). Then fly back, do as much exploring as possible, and ride home, returning on July 19 when I have my girls again. The trip was on a very compressed schedule with very little room for issues, but since I never have more than a 7 day window to work with, it was the only way I could figure out to get up there.

Best,

Chris

I got this today.

Keep in mind it was 6 hours of continuous bashing over rocks.
It did drip a very small spot, less than a dime, while it was still hot. But I put a towel under it to see what happens overnight. After about 4 hours, nothing. Not a drop after being cool, I suppose.

It seeped out the underside of the mated surfaces that has no gasket.

I'm not gonna end my trip over it if it doesn't get a lot worse. :)
Will change fluid in the morning to get an idea of how much I lost.
As bad as it looks, I suspect I lost very little in volume.

Does this look similar to yours Sail2xxs?
Snakebitten,

I've had prior seals that looked exactly like your picture. My rear wheel is not as splattered at the moment, but it is starting to "mark it's terrotory" overnight. I agree with you that it doesn't take much fluid for things to look more serious than they are! Volume loss is probably very minimal. You can bet that I'm going to start "stocking" both seals at home now!

Best,

Chris

I don't have a way to get accurate measurements, and I'm not sure anyone in this little town does either. Maybe.

Another thought Chris - if you're really desperate, I could probably UPS it to you, then you could send me a replacement via USPS sometime later.

Like you, I'd be wary about starting a big trip with a known problem. On the other hand, I doubt it's going to turn into a gusher? Just thinking about my leaky pinion seals, and how they seem to stop leaking when I put fresh oil in. My theory is that the fresh seal-swelling agent in the new oil helps stop the leak. I wonder if, in your case, you could get some seal-swell additive, and what it would do? My theory could well be BS, but might be worth a try.

The other thing I would do would be to call every Yam dealer of any size that's somewhere near your route. Maybe Larry has a way of finding out which dealers sold a bunch of S10's - they would be the ones to call first, they might be stocking those seals. I bet Corporate might be reluctant give out that information though.

Let me know if I can do anything anyway...

Trevor
Thanks Trevor! You better hang on to your seals just in case. I really appreciate your offer though! I have a backup plan for the coming week, so all is not lost! Were you able to get your brake pads?

Best,

Chris

Chris,

I agree with your hesitation. Sure, you could carry a quart of FD lube and probably sustain your ride as long as the failure remains and "seep" and doesn't progress to a "leak". Any chance you could get the seals from a dealer along the route and have the service done on the way?

AC,

I don't think that will work from a timing perspective - if parts like this were readily available, I'd be more willing to take the gamble. With a planned 1500+miles in the first 24 hours to build as much of a "sight seeing time bank" as possible, I think holding off until perhaps late August or early September will make the most sense.

Best,

Chris

The Super Tenere rear drive is a variation on what is in the FJR and you are seeing the exact same that the FJR community has experienced for years. What follows are a couple of threads to see a little of the FJR history and discussions. There are certainly more.

Thanks for the links Bob! I'll definitely do some reading! Btw, backup plan since the bike is not ready for a big trip is to go sailing... planning to do a counterclockwise singlehanded circumnavigation of the Delmarva Peninsula, which is a roughly 450 mile trip. Heading out on Friday. ;D

Chris,

I can't say I blame you at all! Maybe order 2 sets when you find them?

OK - sailing sounds like a good Plan B! Yes, got the pads, the ones I wanted too - EBC HH. Yamaha dealer didn't have stock, offered me FJR pads instead. They look like they would fit, but at $55 they were my fallback. The EBC were $47, so I guess only about $10 more than US?

One problem solved, another one created!

Trevor - I saw that post. Let me know if you need a couple spares sent down... might give you a chance to spend some more time farming!

I got lucky!

Turns out mine was melted grease from the tire change the dealer did in Colorado. He admitted he greased up the splines real good and my splatter was just the melted escape. FD fluid was full.

I told him I got it REAL hot. :)

Good luck to all you guys.

Just to follow up on the final drive seal leak, the seals were replaced under the YES warranty. Unlike the prior replacements, a couple extra parts were used this time. Here's what was listed on the repair order:

1) PN# 93211-54698-00 (1 o-ring)
2) PN# 93102-70004-00 (1 oil seal)
3) PN# 93102-32480-00 (1 oil seal)
4) PN# 93311-43729-00 (1 bearing, cyl. #11)

It will take roughly 20K miles before I'll know if it worked or not. ;)

Best,

Chris

I do a lot of off roading with a Polaris Sportsman 850 quad and and a couple of Polaris Rangers out of town and a lot in Mexico (Puerto Penasco). I carry all kinds of spare parts that commonly fail. I never pay full price from the stealerships. If I know the part numbers, Google shows multiple sources and if I don't, I go to www.cheapcycleparts.com and look up the part number. Sometimes I buy from them and sometimes I buy from others. With all that said, even though I have a warranty with my bike, I will carry those particular parts on my bike. If I can't replace them, I'm sure I can find someone who can nearby

AVC8130 - haven't seen that pattern before! Please say it's lot of lube on the axle from removing the rear tire, and not a hairline crack in the housing!
