Update on this for anyone following...

Got the pair of fans in. Both tested to be working with some jumpers to power.
The overall OD of the FJR fans (these were from an 06-08) is a tad smaller than the Tenere's, but they spooled up fast and strong.
Does it look like they'll install in the Tenere bracket with the Ten's fan blade?

Yessir. The splines on the blades look the same, as does the motor. Should be able to wrap it up tonight, and will post results....good, or bad. ;D

Thanks for the suggestion, and the pics! When I pulled mine apart, both brushes were sitting flush in the housing like this:

I'm expecting the new test fans to be here tomorrow, so I'll check the brushes once I tear back into it. ::008::
Just curious oKLRider, Did you see if the brushes were sticking on the old fan?

I didn't even pull the old fan off last night. My main goal was to see if the new ones were even going to work. Should know more tonight...

Brushes didn't slide super smooth, but not what I'd call stuck. Tested it again, toast.

Yup. In the rare event that this may happen again, or if these test fans die after a week, I didn't want to pull the tank and airbox off again. So I installed some bullet connectors inline, and then added heat shrink on everything back into place.

It's been over a month on the FJR fan how is it holding up? ::017::
I know he hasn't been riding the Tenere a lot in the past month. Ask him in a week when he's back from a round trip from Oklahoma to Indianapolis. MotoGP here we come! ::012::
I'll let oKLRider answer up for himself, but I think the fan is holding up well. This trip will sure tell the tale . ::024::

I had a little snafu with my crossover brake line that put it on the injured list for a bit, but I've easily got a tank through it. No issues yet. Cycles on/off like it's supposed to. :D

okiegtrider is right, MotoGP bound! No hesitations at all about the fan making the trip.

I'll be riding to Indy with my FJR fan motor, however it's still installed in my FJR. I am taking the FJR on this ride given it's slab all the way....

Gentlemen,
First of all, my appollogies for my English. I am chilean and live in Santiago, Chile.

My experience is the following:
I fall down and the blades were trapt. The fan did not work after replacing the fuse.
I bought a new fan, but the spare takes 1 month to arrive from Japan to Chile. The last unit was bought to Yamaha Chile 2 days before of my case. So fan failures is a sensitive part of the Supertenere XT1200.
I decided to investigate and founded this subject that was very helpful.

I disassembled the motor of the fan and founded, as others, that the the brushes were stuck. The reason is that when the blades of the fan are suck, overheats the motor and the part that contains the brushes (plastic) shrinks. I a design failure of Nippon Denso.
I managed to move the brushes and trying to lubricate it, cut the cable that connect it to a small bar that connects the cables to the power. I wear the carbon of the brushes until it was moving easy. Welded the cutted cable, cleaned everything as explained by others and reassembled the motor of the fan. It worked again without problem.

Since I managed to repair it, a friend requested me to review his fan that was also damaged after a wash with hidrojet of his Kawasaki Versys 650cc. BIG SURPRISE... the fan motor is exactly the same brand and part number as the Yamaha Supertenere XT1200Z. The plastic blades are significantly smaller.
I did all the same and also is working again.
In his case, the motor of the fan has a small hole to drain water, but the hole was horizontal, not pointing downwards, and water was accumulated inside the motor (it is marked). Once he finished washing his bike, he turned it on in order that the heat of the motor evaporates residues of water. That caused due to temperature of the motor the start of the fan that had a short due to the water cumulated inside.

I hope this will help you to repair the motor and to avoid damages due to:
1) objects that avoid the free turn of the blades of the fan - inspect the area carefully during each maintenance
2) avoid hitting the area of the fan with water (Yamaha is much better protected than the Kawasaki Versys 650)

What a pity. Last week I removed the radiator and fan of my Versys, but I did not recognize that it is a Denso fan. When he will fit to a Versys 650, he will also be used in a Ninja 650/ER6 (nearly the same bikes). The Ninja is the second most sold bike in Germany and bike parts are often to find in the web.
I made a picture of my Versys fan and it looks like the Denso in my XT.

Rainer, you are correct. The Denso Fan Motor of the Versys 650 is identical to the one used in the Ninja 650/ER6 .... which is identical to the Denso Fan Motor used in the Supertenere.
My friend Versys was repaired in a Kawasaki dealer. They took the Fan Motor from a new Ninja 650/ER6 (we saw it) in order to repair it immediately.

So, a good alternative is to look the Denso part number for different bikes. Unfortunately, the Yamaha part number is for the complete set of the motor, fan blades and metallic structure that holds the components. I tried to find the Denso Part Number in the Denso web page, but could not find it. I guess Denso has an agreement with the bike factories not to sell their components.
