Fan motor replacement...

Anybody know of a source for fan motor replacements, other than the whole assembly from Yamaha (~$300)...? I searched, but came up empty.

Was sitting at the ATM earlier and noticed the temp gauge ride to 225, 230, 235. WTF!? So I hit the highway and cooled her down. Further inspection revealed a blown fuse, and a dirt dauber nest jamming the fan. :(

Pulled the side cover, cleaned the blades, and ran it through a heat cycle. Wouldn't come on. Barely bumped it with my finger, and it comes on, but not much power. There's a minor 'rough' spot of resistance about halfway through the rotation, but I pulled the fan and the problem is inside the motor.

It's sealed, so douching it with spray lube will probably prove pointless. Okiegtrider thought there might be a thread somewhere that an R1 unit can be retrofitted....?

I cleaned up the melted residue on the bottom side of the cover, and it spins freely now. About to test it...

Sorry for your troubles. A lot folks have burned out their fan motors after tipovers that jammed the fan. Doesn't appear the motor is very tolerant of anything that might prevent the fan from turning. Haven't heard of any lower-cost replacements.

Have your dealer call Yamaha service
They know about this problem and might help you out.

I just scored a set of FJR fans off of eBay, as a test. The part numbers are close, but don't match, and the motor housing looks identical...

Just picked up a left over 12 a couple months ago. 2000 miles as of this weekend and fan motor died. No tip overs no obstructions of the fan. It's at local dealer for warranty work this morning.

I was kidding. ;)
It's borderline if I'd even claim it as a warranty item, though.

It's kinda like trying to warranty a tire for a nail in it. :D

Maybe I should start a poll..."If you dropped the bike on it's left side, and the fan went out, would you claim the warranty...?" :)

Fans do burn out and if Yamaha protected the fan better it wouldn't be a problem. If it happened to me, I think I would claim as a warranty issue, but I do have A YES plan still. Whats the worse that could happen? They say no?
