Does anyone know how strict or liberal Yamaha is regarding mods when making a Y.E.S claim? One of the reasons that I've always hesitated to purchase extended warranties with a motorcycle is that I know that I will invariably add an aftermarket "performance" part at some point. I haven't seen any reports of shaft/final drive issues with the S10s, like the GSs, but, if I were to change out the exhaust and install a Power Commander on some other manufacturer's products I know from experience that they'll try to create a reason why it contributed to nearly any other failure.
I realize that in many cases the dealer can work for or against you when making a claim but, the manufacturer can also be an influencing force with the dealer.
My first Yamaha shafty was a 1977 XS750D, then a 1997 Royal Star RSTD, then a 2003 FJR1300 and now the S-10. I never experienced any final drive problems with any of these shaftys, nor have I heard of any problems from various forums.
My RSTD came with a factory warranty for 5 years. Didn't have to purchase it. I had problems with the ignition switch burning up a couple of times. Always happened on a trip (500 mile rule).
I purchased a 4 year YES for the FJR from D&H in Culman, AL for the princely sum of around 300 bucks, IIRC. I would suggest anyone interested in the YES program check with them for a good price. I had no problems whatsoever with the FJR in 5 years of riding this bike. Some early models had failures of the #1&2 exhaust valve guides that would result in the FJR Tick, but not catastraphic engine failures. Yamaha repaired these bikes under a Goodwill 'Warranty'. Owners did not need a YES program for this problem.
As for my 77 XS750D, I rode it for many years (1977-1993) off and on. It once blew a fuze... ???
Anyone purchasing a YES program should check around, since this has an MSRP set by Yamaha, but most good dealers sell for less, sometimes much less. As far as it adding to the 'value' of the bike if selling it, probably about the same as any other 'accessory'. Makes it more attractive to the purchaser, but doubt if it would result in much more money to the seller. JMHO...I don't purchase warranties on everything I buy, but I have an extended on my Honda Ridgeline, and on GL1800. A repair on either of these could cost thousands of dollars, so I consider it a good deal.
