ECUnleashed Gen 2 reflash- What is does and how to get it

I am getting ready to start the process of getting the ECU gen2 flash and the ECUnleashed staff who answered my email inquiry pointed me to Village Motorsports in Grand Rapids, MI. I am sure this is due to my relative proximity to that dealer (SW Ohio).

Has anyone had any dealings with this center for the flash or anything else for that matter. I am nervous about sending my ECU to an unknown (to me) center.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

I'm live in Grand Rapids and purchased my Tenere from Village's store in Holland, MI. I also purchase my parts from the Grand Rapids location and spoke to them about the ECU flash last fall. I am thinking of having this done this summer but haven't spoken to them recently.

I'll try to get in there sometime over the next week and see what they say. After reading about the Gen 2 flash I'm really interested!!

Thanks,
Mat

Doesn't matter why. I'm just saying that after the flash, I'm never gonna get the mileage I was getting tooling around. It's just not possible to rein myself in.

On long runs, MAYBE I will find out if there is any real change between oem and flash mpg. But on long runs I never got good mileage. Where I live the speed limits are 75mph. And you gotta go 80-85 mph (indicated) or you are getting passed.

80-90 indicated is the norm. 4500rpm+

This beast is thirsty at those revs. Always has been.

I get REALLY good mileage, reported on the panel, when I'm coasting to a stop. :)
Lol - I feel you on all that Snake. All these High speed highways in Texas kill my mileage. 80-90 indicated/ 4500 RPM is the norm for long cruises for sure. The beast is thirsty during those rpm's but it definitely purs.

Y'all crack me up watching the fuel mileage indicator. I don't think I've changed my monitor off the water temp in the past 8 months.

I had a 200+ mile all highway round trip for my Flash, the MPG on the way back read 55mpg (indicated 80mph cruising) as o ;)pposed to 51 on the way there under identical conditions.

Been reading about 3 mpg higher ever since, not done enough tank fills to confirm 100% that it is a genuine gain as opposed to Flash screwing with calculations, but even if it turns out to be a couple of MPG down it will be well worth it....

and if it is down I would guess self restraint is the real cause, my runs so far have been with the Mrs and a friend at their pace which has remained unaltered - hence I suspect it is better at the same speed, but the 3-5k torque is so addictive I may abuse it with clear road ahead

Well lemme tell ya....
In 2011 I was on my fall ride and using old school paper maps. Passed up on gas cuz there was another town with the same size map dot in east overshoe WY. Long story short it ended up a ghost town and I was in the shat short on gas. I turned the instant mileage function on and modulated the right wrist to keep it above 50 MPG. Worked out but I was worried.

Back on topic, get it back yet?

Yeah - that's a useful situation to use the function.

I just shipped mine off today- they should have it by Monday.

What's been the average turn around time for this. I need it back by June 3. If they got it by Wednesday do you think that would be enough lead time? This is the problem I have with doing business this way. No direct communication. Very frustrating.

Does anyone know if they changed the timing at 3000-3200 with the GEN II... There is some crazy timing 'issues' at 3-3200 with stock and GEN I... Does anyone know if the GEN II has addressed this ?

I finally got mine all put back together. Nothing to do with ECUnleashed, fixing the Baja lights one last time.

Took it for a short spin down the road and back. WOW. Even after just a really short test hop after assembly...WOW.

I never had the bad surging or any of that business, but it is still so much smoother. And power in S mode seems improved. It's been a couple weeks since I rode it last so I have some buffer time to cloud my judgement, but it does feel much improved. I should get some miles on this week.

WOW

What are the symptoms of the "crazy timing issue".

The only way to know would be to pay ECU Unleashed to tune, then hack the ECU. Since Yamaha/Denso didn't put communication ports to pull flashes on the connector harness of the ECU, you would have to cut the ECU plastic away and get to the board level pins.

I'm pretty sure you have all the industry connections to make that happen...especially since you claim to know about the Gen 1 tuning...

I will be heading out to get the Gen 2 flash tomorrow (in the rain, of course!). Bike is stock other than an Arrow can, so looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about. I have asked the guys to do before and after dyno runs as well, so I can share the info with you good people.

Matt

Thanks for going through the trouble of documenting it with dyno runs. Looking forward to seeing the results and hearing your thoughts on it.

Yes, that will be interesting. Still this will be on a UK spec ECU so may not be exactly what other spec ECU's, such as USA spec units will show. I would really like to see a USA spec Gen 2 before/after dyno runs, as it really feels like it has added significant HP increases on mine, compared to stock and compared to the gen 1 USA flash.

If ECU-U changes the throttle maps, fuel maps and ignition maps I don't see why the country spec of the ECU would matter for the gen 1 vs gen 2 comparison.

Since it is very probable that they start with different baselines, they would have to make different changes to the different spec ECU's to arrive at the same final product. Are they doing that? Perhaps, but if they are and perhaps the different spec ECU's all end up the same, but we really don't know for sure. We really don't know for sure what they have done to our USA spec ECU's. We know the Gen 2's run a heck of a lot better than the stock or gen 1 USA flash ECU's, but that is all we know. Bottom line is we do not have the true info as to what the different spec ECU's have as their baseline programs and we don't know for sure what changes they are making. Therefore, I would find it interesting to see before/after dyno runs on USA spec OEM, Gen 1 and Gen 2 flashes, just to see if those runs show what we are feeling on our USA Gen 2 flashes. They could be compared to Euro spec runs just for conversation's sake, but as we know different dyno's produce different results and only runs done on the same dyno will show true before/after results and still may not show how a bike runs in everyday conditions.

Hi,

Not everyone on here is in the USA, so hopefully someone will find the info useful. If not I will keep it to myself. :)
