In your opinion, would a re-reflash be needed if you chose to fiddle with airscrews and TB syncs?
Not even in the same city let alone ballpark. There is no substitute for 0 throttle restrictions.

Messing around with TB sync won't do anything for grunt, may make the bike a smidge smoother, and the airscrews only affect the very lowest throttle and rev areas, by the time you have got the clutch half way out your probably past where that helps.

You have seen the dyno results, mid range gains of 20-50% in the lower gears, if your lucky a bit of fiddling may get you 1%-2%.

And the dyno does not tell the full story as it is only showing a Wide Open Throttle pull, the part throttle response is SO MUCH stronger it feels much better than the dyno results show, even in the upper gears where the actual power increase is neglible the bike feels far more responsive - and without a doubt is more powerful when using 50% throttle (which the dyno graphs don't show of course)

The CJM gets similar dyno results, but the Flash still feels MUCH better, if I scored the original engine at 5 out of 10, the CJM would have moved it to 7, and I would have to give the Flash 12/10.

I still seem to be going further than before on each tank of fuel, and I plan to update this topic in a few weeks after I have covered 3500 miles touring Europe.

NOBODY is ever going to get a Flash and think they have got anything other than a bargain ::008::

Thanks for the info. Forgive all the questions as I had a bad V-strom experience which i dumped and got the Tenere. ( i should have started with the Yami and I wouldn't have gone through a year of headaches with that POS.) I have a 2000 mi trip to Estes Park in August which should give me a good baseline for the stock S10. I got off the phone with Lee Cycles in Ca. and will send the box for the flash after the trip. I'm really excited to see the difference. If anyone cares, I spoke to Quentin who was very helpful and helped fill in some technical blanks.

Great write up but I do have a question... What oil would be best to use to compliment these upgrades? ::017::
That's easy, you need to buy a litre of oil from four premium brands, then drink them one after the other - use whichever one tasted best when you next change the oil ::008::

Yeah, but for some things it's better than four cups of coffee and a couple of bran muffins... ;)

Rasher, I appreciate that you may not be ale to answer this but here goes anyway:

I have a Gen1 flash, a PCV with O2 optimisers (not an Autotune) and my bike was dyno tuned. It was/is very quick but the O2 optimisers made the bike vibrate badly when touring. (Something the dyno does not see.)

As a result I disconnected the optimisers and the bike is now smooth again. As to whether I have lost power because of this, I have no idea as I do not drive the bike hard as I am always 2 up. My tuning mods were for driveability as opposed to power.

I am due to get the Gen 2 re-flash done next week and I ask if, once done, the optimisers may still be of use or are they completely superfluous with Gen 2 ?

As I understand it, Gen 1 was not ale to change the closed loop area but Gen 2 does - is that correct ?

Cheers, Ray

I am not familiar with the Flash + Power Commander setup.

A basic answer is yes it does alter the closed loop, but with a full system (or just de-cat headers) it will still surge a little just of idle at around 2k.

Carson posted something about how to work around this with a Power commander, in my case it is such a small area it happens on I just ride around it, but if you regularly hold 2,000 rpm in 2nd or 3rd it would be quite annoying (maybe if filtering in rush hour traffic every day) but on the open road is no problem.

Yep you nailed it. If you have headers and want to get rid of that low RPM surge, just plug 10,11,12,13,14, etc.. fuel values from 0% & 2% throttle through 1000k-4000k rpm's. don't even need the autotune if you don't want it to do this...

it's the most annoying in parking lots where you're putzing along trying not to get run over

Is this with the Dynojet O2 optimisers fitted

I will probably go down this route over the winter, the fact it is only for 2% throttle pretty much shows how narrow this "poor running" range is, on my bike it really is just from 2000 - 2100 rpm, and only on the slightest whif of throttle when holding a really steady pace.

Overall I love the Flash, and the mpg is excellent now, I do wonder if by fitting a Power Commander / removing stock O2 sensors I may drop a couple of MPG, just a real shame Unleashed could not sort that glitch out - but if I do fot the Power Commander I would also get it setup on the dyno so it runs spot-on throughout the range.

Just updated the first post to lonk to AVC8130's excellent info on what the CJM mod really does, if any of the guru's now working through the ECU maps have any other details worth adding or topics to link to let me know and I will throw them in at the top ::008::
