I always big up the need for hearing protection, I spent 2yrs with a 50 mile each way commute and didn't use plugs, my tinnitus now keeps me awake at night and I'm really kicking
myself for being so stupid.
Thanks for the warnings.
I’ll have a look at the foam plugs and give them a try.

I suspect a lot of us with tinnitus can point to the reason we have it. I know I can, and yes, it traces back to my own stupidity.

Over the years I have tried many types of hearing protection while riding and while some of the disposables give good results I found that it was dependent on how well they were inserted. It was frustrating to start riding and find that one or both were not inserted correctly and end up either putting up with the noise or stopping to re-insert them. I finally got fed up this year and had a custom pair made at a hearing clinic. WOW what a difference! I can wear them all day with no irritation and best of all they fit correctly and provide the same level of protection every time I wear them. I chose to just have ear plugs but I did have the option of bringing in my own ear buds which they mold in during the manufacturing. I will probably get a second pair made with ear buds so that I have the option of music or GPS instructions on long rides. Like many of the other posters it is too late to prevent hearing damage for me but at least now I know that what I am wearing is preventing further damage.

Just a few thoughts about disposibles, E.A.R for instance.

Knowing that there are a few 'grey beards' out there - the ear canal needs to be largely hair free. Not the micro fine stuff of babies bottom, the wispy whiskery coarse hair that springs up out of nowhere as gravity makes it descend from your head type stuff. Leave it in there & the plugs can pop out at the first opportunity, probably when you turn your head at a busy intersection. Some find that moistening the ear canal, with just plain water helps insert as well as retain the plugs too.

What are you talking about? O:) My ears now closely resemble 'oddbod' from "Carry On Screaming", for those that don't know, '60's comedy films in the UK.

Something I have found useful is a small extension I plug into my Sena port and leave it there. It makes it simple to plug in the earplug pin without trying to find the port in the Sena unit.
To answer an earlier comment about excess earplug cord, my plugs are custom so I ask that the cord be 18" in length below the "Y" and that works great. -JEP-
