I agree, let them work out the US bound assembly kinks on your bikes first. >:D

Ouch!!!! Yeah, I never thought about that!!!! It often happens with new models that some little item slips through. The good thing is that the US model "should" only have minor tweaks to meet US DOT, EPA, etc standards.

How do you know they aren't building them as we speak? Wouldn't that be nice?
We don't know, they may be building them today, they might start first thing tomorrow. Do they work on Sundays in Japan? If they keep their promise to deliver them in May per order sequence, I will be happy. I haven't seen an order number lower than mine yet. ;D

There were no kinks, none, in my 03 FJR1300 which I purchased at Twin Peaks Motorsports on Highway 66. Of course like the S10, the FJR was 'test ridden' across the pond for a year or so ;D Gee, I wonder what happened to Twin Peaks. I stopped in there a while back and the store was empty. Too bad, 'cause they always treated me right.

Ha, this made me think of a snafu that happened a few years back. I bought a 2004 Pontiac GTO back when they debuted in the States (made in Australia, a re-badged Holden Monaro), and one of the first loads of cars made it all the way to the States and was on a train that crashed, and they were lost. Some of the folks waiting for the cars to arrive had to wait a little longer. :'( Let's hope the S10 assemblies and deliveries go smoothly.

I assume your '03 did not exhibit the "tick tick" problem that some did? I've had no problems with my '08. VERY pleased.

Apparently Twin Peaks had some problems with management and went a couple directions that did not work out as planned (or, so I'm told). I bought a few items there over the years going back to when they were still on South Main in Longmont.

Interstate Honda also shut their doors right after the first of the year. I dealt with them for many years when they were Loveland Motorsports and later when they moved into their new facility.

Ouch! This is disheartening news. I ordered in late November. I really hope I do not have to wait for half of the summer to be over!

That just wouldn't be cool now, would it?

Jeez, I did not mean to rain on everyones parade. I don't think mine will get ordered officially until Tuesday.

Good things are worth waiting for. Many will cancel their orders and that will move the rest of us up the line.

Hang in there folks.

I suspect that Yamaha will be good to their word. They've always hit the dates proffered. I tend to buy new their new bikes as a matter of course. The MT's came on time, as did the big bang R1's the V Max and dare I say it .... the Super Tenere.

I doubt that, as the $500 deposit is "non-refundable".

Hmm, this certainly gives me a moment of pause. This is exactly what I was hoping would not happen and what I asked my local dealer to find out about. Did he do it? NO. I hope this is just rumor.

Fred, the owner where i got mine in Cle Elum, WA has seen it on the list that his is the first one ordered in the USA. He first tried at 12:01am Sept 1, then got in a few hours earlier when the computer came back to life. I don't have his number though.

The Yam rep I was talking to seemed prepared for the question and had a very specific answer. "Not the first week of May." I still hope they are trying to set low expectations to buy time just in case there is an issue. Always better to exceed expectations.

As someone else mentioned, production runs are scheduled many months in advance and the line may be making S10's one week and watercraft or ATV's the next. My experience in ordering several bikes under the PDP or PDP-like programs is that when you get your bike the production date on the steering head will be 1-3 months earlier than the delivery date. So I expect Yamaha to start buildilng S10's sometime in March. They also may be ramping up production slowly or doing an initial pilot production run that will result in only a small number of bikes initially. This all assumes that no last minute design glitches occur - emissions certification is always something that tends to be a last-second hurdle and can cause long delays. And there is the specter of a huge meltdown glitch like the ZX10R just experienced.

A delivery of a bike under PDP is just not something you should be making hard-core plans around. And Yamaha has always said "Deliveries BEGIN in May" and May 31st is in May. You also have to keep in mind that huge varability in shipping times across the country - motorcycles are not like FedEx packages where delivery time is hugely prioritized. A bike may sit in a warehouse for several weeks waiting for the next container, ship, railcar, or truck. I don't recall that previous PDP's of the FJR were every significantly early and the first couple were generally late. It typically took several months for them to completely fill all orders. On the first FJR PDP there were a few people who waited a full five months from the time the first bikes were in customer hands until they got theirs - I'm not expecting anything this bad. I'd bet that if you ordered in March, you'd have your bike by end of August because I expect they'll build out the entire demand by the end of May.

PDP is a double-edged sword. Good deals on a new model, but if you want complete predictability, you buy something else and buy off the floor. Yamaha decided they had to PDP to reduce the risk to import the model and that is there prerogative; it is ours to go buy something else.

Well-stated Mark.

I've never ordered a motorcycle before, but have a car (BMW) and you are exaclty right about a lot of variables/delays/etc that can occur between when it leaves the Factory overseas and when it arrives at your local dealer.

HiJeff,

Yeah, I read where you said that before. It would be interesting if you could get his order number. I read a long time ago that they started with 155950. If so, that should be his number. Mine is 155951 and I haven't seen a lower number, so it may be the second one ordered.

Did he do what? I am having trouble trying to figure out what it is you asked your dealer to find out about. Something that you hoped would not happen.

Thanks

I asked him when I would get the bike based on when I placed an order, according to Yamaha's cut off deadline of March 31. If I placed it tomorrow, or the month after, or the month after that......when would I get the bike?

"What I hoped wouldn't happen?" I get the bike in 2012 or just before or way past the riding season of 2011. We all gotta plan. ;D

I doubt any dealer would be able to tell you "when" since none of them appear to know much at all concerning the factory schedules, order number meaning, sales figures, etc. They are not much more than "order takers" at this point.

At this point, I'm very happy I still have my FJR to take me well into the 2011 riding season "just in case"!!

;D
