The ripple effect of the disaster will have far reaching results. The Japanese manufacture a ton of component parts for GM, Harley Davidson and thousands of other companies, both here in the US and abroad. Second sourcing some of these components would be a PITA (if even possible/feasable). Quality issues, costs and lead times would be a nightmare and the customer would end up with a lesser product and in the end, delivery times probably wouldn't be any better.

Delays are going to be common. Japan is a manufacturing powerhouse. This disaster, in one way or another, is going to affect just about everybody.
This is already happening. My dad has a good relationship with the fleet sales manager at the local Ford dealer, who mentioned that the Japanese part content in the F-150 is going to lead to shortages and potential price increases. I don't believe this to be a sales tactic since this guy is about as straight a shooter as a car salesman can get.

It seems we have only begun to feel the effects of this disaster.

55 and it's over? No way! I'm nearly that old and I expect to be riding for a long time to come. ;)

I got a letter from Yamaha today. Delivery of my Super Tenere's will be delayed. They are hoping to have filled all orders by November. And if I want to cancel my order, they'll give me a full refund of my earnest money.

At least they let me know before May 1st. I guess I'm not riding to Alaska in July on my new XT1200Z.

Yeah, you don't want to be biking up to this neck of the woods in December. It's pretty rude that time of year. I hope you can find something else in the interim. July would be good. It can still get pretty cool, and it can be wet. Plan on bringing mosquito armor along.
Anyway, I hope you make it, but Alaska will still be here next year. It might even be better. Good luck. R

It's rather scary watching the documentaries on events at the nuclear power plant. For a while, they were saying milk in Oregon had higher than average levels of radiation. Discharging radioactive water into hte sea kind of puts things in a different perspective.

I got another letter from Yamaha today. They are now saying all bikes delivered "to your selling dealership by the end of August." That still gives them 90 days to pull everything together. I'm taking it as a sign that Japan is getting back on its feet. Fingers crossed.

Raven. It's been a while since I had a black bike. At the moment, I've got an orange SuperDuke and a blue FJR in the garage. Plus, my wife's grey SV650SF. My last black bike was a DL-1000, which followed a Black YZF600R.

I took the Intro to Adventure riding at RawHyde this last March. Actually my wife encouraged me to do it. She was hoping I'd come home disinterested. No such luck. During the class I made some new friends from Norhtern BC. So I'm still planning on skipping out for a couple weeks to get to Hyder and explore northern BC.

Hey Digitalmoto, if you are going as far as Hyder and Northern BC you should come up to Whitehorse for the Super Tenere gathering July 1 - 5 2012. there will be a fair number of SupaT's converging here on related trips to Alaska and parts north.

Troll: I want to ride to Inuvik and/or Prudhoe Bay next summer so that might work out. Inuvik seems easier and more exotic for some reason. For one thing, it's closer.

For this year...
I've got a buddy in Terrence, BC. We're supposed to link up in August and hit Hyder, Telegraph Creek, possibly Jade City depending upon his work schedule. I can afford about 2 weeks away before my clients get jumpy.

Very nice ride you have planned there, there is a lot of riding east of Dease Lake in and around Telegraph Creek. Jade City is almost to the Yukon boarder as I am sure you know - The Stewart/Cassiar highway is a beautiful ride/drive

I agree about the Dempster/Inuvik trip, really the road less traveled compaired to the Dalton/Dead Horse trip and it is closer. The Dalton is nearly all chip seal surface, the Dempster is all dirt no frills ADV riding. If you really want remote we can take you up the North Canol - now that is unsupported Adventure riding. Look forward to seeing you July 2012. 8)

Sounds like you live in BC - correct? If you please - add your location to your profile. It makes it handy for others to see where you live.

Thanks!
