I prefer not to have to remove the ignition key every time I need to fuel up, so I thought I'd try this CNC quick release fuel cap. The handle is spring loaded and requires downward pressure and it's a quarter turn to open it, available in a variety of color combinations. I opted for all black.

Price was $70, shipped from HK by registered mail. It arrived in 8 days and was shipped promptly. I've always received excellent service from the2wheels.com

While I'd point 70 bucks in a different direction on a normal day. If for some reason my cap was damaged, this is an awesome replacement. I hate having to take out the key for filling up but I don't 70 dollars hate it.

Nice looking cap though!

The only thing worse than having to take out my key to fill the tank is having to pull out my wallet to pay. Does anyone know of any gas stations that use a retina scan debit system?

Ha! tell me about it. I usually keep a card in the chest pocket of my jacket just for this. Nothing is more annoying than having to fiddle while at the pump.

Nice looking cap.

I keep the card I use for gas in the nifty little pocket on my Klim jacket sleeve that's designed to hold your medical information card. I'm hoping if the paramedics check there for my medical info (of which i have none relevant yet) and find an Amex with no pre-set limit they'll at least assume I can afford their services?

Or they might just grab the card, bolt, and go on an epic bender...in that case at least I won't have to worry about the bill. ;)

The keyless lock looks and sounds good but... I use a tankbag ring lock. I asked more than once if the keyless lock would work and never got a reply. Guessing is does not work with the tankbag ring.

I keep a spare key in the seat lock and use it to open the gas tank lock.

I have a Givi tank bag ring mounted in conjunction with the above keyless cap. It works well. I did not take a picture of it.

There are only 3 screws holding the OEM fuel cap assembly on. The other two screws are cosmetic. Oh and there is one more very small screw under the fuel cap that has to be removed too.

I don't see why not to keep it stock. Taking out the ignition key is by no means onerous. It's an ingenious design that shouldn't be defeated.

The locking cap protects you by keeping anyone from siphoning or contaminating your fuel, without the need for a second key, and at the same time, it protects you, Yamaha, and gas stations from liability by ensuring the engine can't be started with the cap open.

People go to the trouble of buying locking gas caps for their car for a reason.

IMHO, throwing on questionable mods like this brings the bike one step closer to Frankenbike-hood.

Noobs. ;) The gas cap key slot is short. Get an extra key, slip it in and mark where it seats at. Pick up a knob at the hardware store, cut the key off so it will seat in the knob and epoxy it in after making sure it's sticking out enough to go all the way in the cap's lock. I took my cap apart and removed the flap as well. Cost was a few dollars. The short key can't be used on the ignition. Bonus, you can't lose your cap. Works fine on my tank bag mounting ring equipped S10.

Genius Eric. I know I had seen this idea before. Just never thought it through as being an elegant solution.

My only beef with it is it would make me a bit of a hypocrite to do it.
I have a LITTLE RonH-ness in me. And I often mock folks for complaining about the Tenere for things I find frivolous.
Example: no buttons on handlebars for the dash. Or having to take the key out of the ignition for gas. Traction control resetting to 1.........

All these things are trivial time based tasks. None more than a second or two of our life. I find it remarkable that you can even push a button and make so many amazing things happen.

So you see the dilemma? Lol

Dang I like that idea. I might do it AND rig up a button cluster to control all the momentary switching on the console. To heck with it!

(That would be some good uses of the FJR left side switch cluster. :) )

It was an idea I borrowed from another rider, but yes, so simple it's brilliant.

One of these days I'll wire the garage door opener to one of those un-used momentary switches on the FJR left side cluster. That really would save me some digging.

I mainly did the gas cap key mod because on rallies I need to record the odo at gas stops. Unlike the FJR, the S10 doesn't have two trip odos visible at the same time. I used to leave the main odo and one trip meter visible and that was the bomb. On the S10 I have to toggle thru. Not having the key out of the ignition saved me some time in that regard.

I did this mod on the gas cap door on my Goldwing. I thought about this for the S10, but with the Givi tank lock ring, the key knob would protrude too much and the tank bag's tank lock won't sit flush. I don't care for a locking fuel cap, the S10 is not an attention magnet and mine's always parked securely indoors.

I've seen some pretty short knobs, but I have no idea how much clearance the Givi system gives you. Some of the knobs are just a 1/4" disk. I ground the key blank shaft down some to fit in the knob, but some guys just heat it up with a torch and melt it in place.

The locking feature isn't a big deal for me. My fuel cell doesn't have a locking cap. But I really like caps to be tethered or retained like the oem hinged one. Sucks big time to stop for gas and discover that the cap is missing. My wife has a 'race' cap on her bike and carries an extra cap taped to the top box lid, (on the inside). It's gone missing once and I found it off, but jammed into the luggage frame once too.
