Well it took me two tries but the second time it worked. The first time I tried to use the signal directly from the rear wheel sensor for VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) but that didn't work because the type of wheel sensor used in this bike is an MR (magnetoresistive). They are very accurate but they modulate current not voltage directly. As a result the resulting voltage changes are very small and won't work for the gear indicator circuit.
I found that Datatool sells a nearly identical unit and that the instructions look to be ithe same except for the wire colors. And they are better written and easier to follow. If you do a search for - datatool digital gear indicator install - you will find a PDF link and several videos on the install.
So here is what comes in the package:

And here is what it looks like installed:

I happened to have a blank space in my switch panel but there are several ways to mount it with Velcro.

There are 6 wires to hook up. Two are just power and ground (red/black) . Hook to any switched power and ground location. I happened to have a fuse block installed so I just hooked to that like so:

The other "easy" one is the white programming wire. Just add some length to that so is quick to ground it during programming.
The three signal wires are a bit of a pain.
Starting with the simplest one, the orange wire gets tied to the neutral switch; You can see where that is here in the wiring diagram:

I tied into it with a green wire at the fuel pump relay as shown here:

The wire you tie to is the light blue one, third from the end on the bottom row of the connector.

The next wire is the really hard one. It is the VSS signal.
Here it is in the wiring diagram:

You need to tie into the blue wire that runs between the ABS and the ECU. I already had a wire tied to it for the cruise control so I just tied to that. It is one of the main bundles under the tank as shown here;

The gray wire is from my cruise control and I just tied to that but it the blue one in the picture that we need. You can also find this wire on the ECU connector (I checked) and I assume on the ABS computer.

The last signal we need to pick up is engine speed. I tied directly to the crank sensor and it is relatively easy to get to. Here it is in the diagram:

You can find it just under the right cover and trace the wire up from the motor; Tie to the blue wire just above the connector (Black Connector just above the white one in the picture) as shown here:

If you want to give it a try, you can find the indicator on Ebay here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorcycle-Universal-Gear-Indicator-Red-display-6-speed-/191200742785?hash=item2c8473cd81:g:Nd4AAOSw37tWBim4&vxp=mtr

This install was a bit of a pain but I do like the results. I know we don't NEED a gear indicator but it is nice to have and this one is cheap. ;D

Very nice write up and documentation of your installation, you're a persevering guy. I was able to simplify my installation of a gear indication display with the purchase of a newer model ST :))

Seriously, great job jaeger22.

I would not disagree. I happen to be a recently retired techno geek and enjoyed the challenge. The price was right, but it was a lot of work for a "nice to have".
I posted this mostly for any others who like me, had ordered one before Nessbird posted that he had run into problems with his install.
Still, now that the work is done, it does put a smile on my face every time I go for a ride and look down and see it. :)

Up until I owned a V-strom, I never knew what gear I was in. On my Road King, I knew I was in first or fifth because the shift lever wouldn't go any further :)

It was nice having a gear indicator on the NC700, and with it being a DCT and not having to pull in the clutch, I always knew what gear it was in. The 2015 ST I now have has the gear indicator, but I hate the fact that when I pull the clutch in the indicator goes to ------

Unfortunately this one is the same way. :( When you pull in the clutch it can no longer compare wheel speed to engine speed to calculate the gear. However if you are in neutral, it displays correctly with a zero due to the neutral switch sense line. Personally I haven't found this to be much of a problem. . . so far.
There are some Gear Indicators that use magnets and sensors on the actual shift lever and work by just counting up/down clicks from neutral. So they should work even with the clutch in. They may be simpler to install also but I haven't actually done one so that is speculation.
One thing that I have found that I don't like is that it is a bit hard to read in direct sun light due to the reflections from the shiny surface of the display. I think I will try adding some dark plastic or film to see if that helps. I will post if I come up with anything good.

Great work Jaeger22, really glad you nailed it, my wiring differed in that I wired the RPM pulse to the ECU orange CYL 1 ignition coil signal because I thought the CPS too noisy. On reflection, if I had tried programming the GI at higher revs I believed it would have worked perfectly. In the end I bought a £45 GI from PZ Racing in Italy.

Looks good Nissbird! Glad you found a way.

Patric, not hard at all. You can put the bike on the center stand and program it. It did take me a couple of tries but you can just ground the programming wire for 30 seconds or so and start over as many times as needed. Even needing several tries it was a 5 minute task.

Hi I have a question on the Connection to the crank sensor on the Uk Diagram (Number 28) the black and Blue is a common with the O2 sensors and Coolant sensor plus Air sensors
is this the case with the US version ??
Am I right in thinking the speed will need to come off the Grey cable and not the common ??

Nice write up!

I've seen a lot of comments in threads about people complaining about the gear indicators not working when the clutch is pulled in. Why is this? I don't typically hold my clutch down for long lengths of times, nor use my gear indicator so much that it's even that noticeable. It's nice in town when you're between lower gears but I mentally have an idea of where I'm at anyways.

In the 5spd FJR i test rode I could see the gear indicator being especially beneficial when I'd search for that all elusive 6th on the highway speeds.
