Sorry to hear this.

If you have a roadside service do yourself a favor and have the bike towed to the dealership. Check your insurance company for roadside service.
Or......Join the AMA. If you enroll in auto-renewal you get free roadside assistance and towing for ALL of your vehicles, including cars, trucks, RV's and trailers, even for your spouse or kids in college. I just had my vintage '67 Ford F-250 flatbedded home this week. Smooth as silk and no questions. Plus...... you help fund many other important motorcycle interests. $39 a year.

And no, I don't have a personal interest. I don't necessarily agree with everything they do (racing rules, mostly), but things would be a LOT worse for all of us without them.

After two long off road rides, lots of washboard and rocks I had my bike do the same thing.
Lost the adjuster nut and the spoke hit the drive shaft and bent. Just one spoke is all I noticed.

I'd seen this thread and still forgot to check. My bad.

Called the dealer this morning. Yamaha doesn't sell single spokes. Full rear set $90.
Looks like I'll have a few spares.

Did a quick google search and there is a wheel guy on the ADVrider site who makes a SS set.
Very heavy duty looking. I'm not looking to change out unless I'm breaking the spokes.
This was just the nipple backing out. My fault for not checking them.

I'll probably just order a set and next time there is a post like mine I can help out.

If that's all that went out for the ride we were on I'm happy about it. ::008::

I would suggest that you do the old dirt-bike trick and get a bunch of small zip-ties and put them around each spoke where they cross with another spoke. This will prevent the spokes from moving if they break, or you lose the nipple.

I was the one that took my bike to Woody's so he could get all of the measurements. I probably won't change my spokes out until necessary (broken, rusted), but the spokes that Woody intended on offering are substantially better than stock.

I have ordered a complete new rear factory set of spokes.
Sounds like nipples are really the demand item.
Forget the zip ties, get out the lock-tite! :)

This from the "Vibration" thread. Sounds like the Green Stuff is the way to go.

My loose spoke with missing nipple from this morning was tight 500 miles ago - obviously they need help, I wasn't looking forward to removing every nipple to apply loctite...

On the spokes, try using green lock-tite
http://www.loctiteproducts.com/p/t_lkr_green/overview/Loctite-Threadlocker-Green-290.htm
I have use this and it works great.

Thanks Jim - sounds perfect! "No disassembly required". I'm surprised there's not something like this on the spokes from the factory. On the one that lost the nipple, I couldn't see any threadlocker at all.

"Due to it's low viscosity and capillary action, the product wicks between engaged threads and eliminates the need to disassemble prior to application. Loctite® Threadlocker Green 290™ cures when confined in the absence of air between close fitting metal surfaces. It prevents loosening from shock and vibration and leakage from shock and vibration and protects threads from rust and corrosion."

Nipple newbies all of ya!

It's a giant nuclear powered dirt bike.

I think YAMAHA Thought that all the S10 owners would be coming from the Dirty backgrounds or would never actually take them off road.

Now my question is...

They have obviously made a couple of dirt bikes in their time over a few years, so what gives?

Is it just one of those things that happens in the dirt bike world and no one gives it a thought OR is it just a huge bloody dirt bike that YAMAHA used some pre existing spokes and didn't think it would be pounded around as much as it is?

Is YAMAHA just sitting back in shock as all the alleged, by the market research team, slipper wearing, geriatric, starbucks drinking owners go feral like they were 16 again. ???

Bizarre, easy to deal with but still, little things like this can pee people off a bit if they are not told about the spoke thing.

Easier to fix than a cracked wheel I suppose :D

Off the top of my head I'm not aware of a similar hub set up from Yamaha that has the nipple
on the hub end. Standard spoked wheels a nipple could never be lost. It's held in place by the
rim and tube pressure. I guess a BMW could lose the nipple from the top.(head scratch)

True, yes now I think about it. Getting some edumacation today. ::008::

So, when YAMAHA reads this thread and suddenly has an "OH SHIT" moment, I am sure they would be interested in how you check that the spoke tension is correct with that gooey Locktite Green stuff in there. Wouldn't that give some OFF torque settings or is it way less of an issue than Locktite blue.

I assume you have to go buy a YAMAHA tuning fork and adjust the spoke to Lower C or something.

So once the wheel is true and correct you can play it like a harp. O:)

Maybe someone can provide a music file so that everyone is in tune. Especially for those guys up north who need something to obsess about until the next riding season.

Not 100% sure, but I think the BMW outer rim spoke style has a patent.
Forcing other manufacturers to either pay up or get creative.
