Hey,

Just a heads up for all you slackers out there who are just like me. I never bothered to check the final drive oil level after picking up Black Beauty three weeks ago. Changed the oil tonight at 800km and was all ready for the ooze to spill forth out the drain hole, but all I got was a couple lousy drops. Measured out at less than 100ml, or less than half the full amount.

Does the dealer add this oil, or does it come from the factory already installed?

Mike

It's factory filled, but I am sure it is part of the PDP for the dealer to check.

I changed my final drive oil at 100 and then again at 2400 miles.
The first time the oil looked new , the 2nd time it looked somewhat dirty but had very little fuzz on the magnet.

Okay, that does it, I'm taking the spray can of chain oil out of my topcase.

Oh no, wait, that is for the wife's 696. Sorry.

Mine was the same, I was shocked. To think that there wasn't that much oil in it and it didn't blow up. Good thing it's not a BMW :D

We set up 5 Super Tens and all 5 were low on final drive oil. The setup instructions tell the tech to check this, by the way.

My level seemed fine when I changed it, but I still would love to have had a video of the tech going over my bike......thanks for sharing Fredz43

Just did my 600 mile service and was surprised just how little final drive oil came out of my bike. I didn't measure it but it couldn't of been more than 4 oz.
I purchased a quart of final drive oil so I figure I can get another 3 changes out of that and will change it again with the next 3 engine oil changes. It might be over-kill but after that I see me changing the final drive oil every riding season. It's cheap & easy enough to do. ::008::

I changed mine at 50 miles - didn't measure how much came out of it, but a lot less than went back in. I'd guess it was 100 ml. Glad I only did 50 miles on it.

Surely the factory under fills the final drive to save money. I am going to ask the dealer if they check the Yamaha final drives.

Mine had less than full when I checked it at 300 miles. I changed it at 1000 miles and 2000 miles and will change it again every 1000 miles to 5000 miles. Can't hurt and will get some older gear oil off my shelf. At 5000 miles I will add Mobil 1 75W-90.

Don't forget that the manual says the final drive only holds approx 7oz of fluid (.2 quarts)! Not much as all.

Not very much but they also tell you to fill the final drive until it drains out the fill hole. If you open the fill hole and nothing drains out then it probably was low on fluid.
If you rotate the rear wheel backwards it will pull fluid into the final drive. Do this to overfill and let it drain and it should be full.

Just did my first FD service. 2300 miles and it looked pretty good. Looks like it was changed at 600 mile service. Did a flush and got approx 200 ml in. Ready to go now!

That's a lot of gear oil changing. Gear oil doesn't get dirty like engine oil. It just splashes around in there to lubricate the bearings. Like you say, it doesn't hurt to change it, but doubt that it's necessary. Only changed my BMW final drive oil every couple of years and never had a problem. Ymmv.

My BMW R1200RT had a supposedly lifetime lubricated final drive that never needed servicing, so it did NOT have a drain plug. I removed it to turn it upside down and change the oil every 10,000 miles and it still failed at 77,000. It held about 6 oz of oil but the main bearing inside the drive was a sealed unit and only ran it the little bit of grease that it contained, not a very good design for the long term. Of course BMW has changed their recommended service schedule on later models and added a drain plug, but they still fail.
