I have done a search before you ask :) and cant find the answer to my question which is - what are the symptoms of a CCT that needs replacement. I have a few things which lead me to believe mine might be ready for a replacement but would like to know what you have to say? My S10 is a 2013 with 27,000 miles
Cheers

It will chatter on start up for maybe 1-2 sec. At that time it might need to be addressed.

Is there an internal compression spring inside the CCT? Must be the spring weakening over time and its preload weakens as the Shaft went further out.

Just thinking/wondering if the existing CCT, the extending shaft, if its end can be welded to say a couple of thick washers, would get back the desired pre-load of the spring. Any thoughts on this idea?

For the sake of @ $100 +/-, it just would not be worth the effort or potential failure associated with that.

As Dogdaze indicated, you'll be playing with fire. The spring would have already been weakened.

2012 owners -

I've just pulled the CCT from my 2012 with 44,000 miles on the clock.

I changed my CCT because the writing is on the wall for the 2012's & my bike was making a clearly audible slapping sound upon start up. About 30% of the time, the chain would slap three, sometimes four times before it settled down to its normal running idle. The Tenere's valve cover has a protective plastic guard on the inside of the cover, presumably, to keep a loose chain from wearing through the cast iron. My chain has been hitting that guard hard enough to put scratches in it. I bet if I had placed my hand on the top of the valve cover, when I punched the ignition button, I could have felt the chain hitting the underside of the cover...maybe not? Has anyone tried that?

Once removed from the engine, the old CCT fell apart in my hands. The cir-clips seem to be unable to hold the tensioner together.

I used the updated stock auto CCT. It took a bit of work to get the new tensioner spring to release.

If this unit starts making noise like the old one did, I'll replace it with a manual one at the next valve check.

Thanks to all for making this issue known.

CCT ADJUSTMENT HELP NEEDED

I just installed a Graves manual CCT on my 2012 with 31,000 miles.

But I'm not sure I have it adjusted correctly.

I installed it before removing the zip ties from the cam sprockets/chain, then cut the zip ties.

Only 3 threads are showing on the adjuster above the lock nut. Seems like there should be more threads showing for future adjustments...?

Graves install instructions are a bit confusing to me... they talk about maximum 3 degrees of crank movement to set tension...

https://www.gravesport.com/content/instructions/CMY-13R1-PCT.pdf

YouTube videos show tightening the CCT finger tight until tension is felt, then backing it off half a turn and locking it...is this a safe and effective method to set CCT tension?

Once set, Is it safe to do future minor adjustments with the engine running to fine tune it?

Can anyone give me another way to make sure I have the correct CCT tension please?
