Can't Remove Yoshimura Baffle...

I just installed my yoshimura RS4. I got the "D" model with the removable baffle. The muffler came with the baffle installed and the allen bolt is about an inch back from the tip of the baffle which is narrow. I can barely get my allen wrench in the bolt (had to use a shortest one I had) and even then, the angle is such, that I can't turn the bolt enough to reposition the wrench (due to narrow baffle). Any suggestions? I don't have a blow torch to heat up a wrench to bend/offset the allen wrench head from the body. Im going to get a pic later.

I called yoshimura, and they weren't very helpful. I can ride in next week post rain and they "might" be able to help me.

TIA, I figured some other people have received their muffler like this, and have had the same problem.

Looking forward to the pix. The only allen on my RS-4 does not remove a baffle.
Ah, finally. "D", It's a dual port muffler. The bottom port is change-able. They don't show a model for the Tenere.

Awesome - Thats the baffle I was talking about - its an m4 size.

Autoteach - Thanks! Ball end allen - thats what those are for! I was thinking about trying to heat it up over the stove, while holding with two vise grips and then bending, but that should work. The normal allen, just needs a little more room to slip in.

Don in Lodi - Yoshimura currently only lists their signature series on the site, which is the EPA? 50 state approved version with non removable baffle. I believe that is the "DE" model.

Ball End Allen
Autoteach - I did a quick search online and all the ball end allens I saw were only ball end on the long side, do you know if I should be able to find one with ball end on both ends?

Just be careful with the baffle removed on Ténéré, the hot gases will melt everything on their way, I've seen DOT reflectors, fender and blinkers disfigured from Yoshimura, (I don't know which model).

My understanding, at least in one of those instances, was the mounting bracket was on backwards. The exhaust was more to the inside causing that stuff to melt. Personally, I highly doubt I'll take the silencer out, I like what I've heard on other bikes with it in :).

Never saw the ball end on the short side, but mine doesn't have the crazy turn down piece and the straight ball end gets in there no problem.

I was able to get it out today, but huge PITA for something thats supposed to be removable.

I picked up a mini 1/4" ratchet, and dremmel'd 1/4" off the tip of an m4 bit, to shorten it. I was able to get the bolt about halfway out with the ratchet, but had to stop there, if I unscrewed any further, I wouldn't have been able to get the ratchet/bit out. I then had to use needle nose pliers to manually turn the bit in the screw until it was out. It makes me wonder if Yosh actually wants you to be able to take it out…

The sound is amazing though - the bike finally has a proper growl. Big pita, but I doubt Ill ever put the baffle back in.

Follow up..

I definitely torched the reflector (stopped after a longer ride in the hotter weather we've been having, and it was gone) and a hole through the edge of the fender…

I installed the bracket correctly, but I mounted the muffler on the inward side of the bracket instead of the outside, trying to keep it as tight as possible.

If I move it to the outside It would position it about a half inch further out, which should clear the reflector (if it was still there) for those that haven't installed theirs yet. As it is, it doesn't hit the blinker and I don't think the hole can get any bigger, so I may just leave it.

Mine was installed correctly & melted the reflector. Called Yoshimura & sent it back for them to install a tip to direct heat & exhaust down. Works fine now.

Reviving an old thread because i recently removed the baffle in my yoshi exhaust, took me a while to figure out fhe best way to remove allen and i'd like to share with the community. The easiest way to remove the 4mm allen head bolt is to cut an "L" allen wrench so there is only a nub on the short side of the "L" (~.25"). I cut a cheap allen wrench that came with a piece of furniture. It was very easy to remove and install bolt, with a cutoff allen wrench i had enough room to turn the bolt a few degrees and i had enough room to completely remove the bolt using the allen wrench (no need to use needle nose pliers for the last bit).

The sound of the yoshimura without the baffle is a lot deeper and meaner but it is loud. I prefer the volume with the baffle in but i prefer the sound with it out. Decisions, decisions.

I just installed the Yoshi on my '13 Tenere. I didn't realize they made 2 different pipes.... I apparently have the pipe that has the bolt inside the baffle welded in. Very nice pipe... but I'm a bit dissappointed as I expected to have the option to run it with or without the insert. I do like it better than stock but its actually pretty quiet. Honestly was wanting just a bit more sound difference from stock for the $$ as that is all I bought it for... wasn't expecting a performance increase. But.... I certainly don't want it "Harley" loud in any way.

Hmmm... so anyone tried to cut the spot weld off the bolt on the Yosh pipe I have? If not....guess I'll just live with it.

Drill the rivets from the end cap like you're going to do a repack, take a peek, there's nothing in there you can remove and have the thing function. Mine is louder than I wanted, I took the second hand muffler apart to make sure the packing was good. It's packed to the top with a shredded material. It surrounds the perforated baffle the full length of the muffler, the baffle meets the turn down pipe at the end cap. Remove that screw and pull that pipe out of there and the packing will be free to blow out. You could remove the packing and pull/modify the baffle maybe, cut a chunk off and replace it with closed pipe, it still needs to run the full length of the muffler to hold the packing in place. At least that's how my RS/4 is put together.

on mine... the screw you remove to pull out the baffle has been welded in..... a spot weld to the bolt.

So you feel its too loud with the baffle out? I don't want it loud... just a bit louder than it is. Guess I'll just let it be as its not a huge deal. Maybe I'll get some performance increase with it.

With the baffle out it doesn't seem that loud to me. Others have told me they can just barely hear it when they ride next to me.
