Some of the Skid Plates use it for a mounting point. I've never had the oem, so don't know if it does.

Word to the wise, don't use it for anything, point and laugh at those that do. Don't cut it off either, it's hollow and will leak oil.

Thanks, wasn't planning on cutting it off for sure :). The weird thing is that it still has some marks on it, as if something was bolted to it (since I bought the bike new, I can't imagine what that could be). Maybe to secure the bike during transport?

They are used as mounting points when the engine is stuck in the jig going down the production line. They flip, spin, and turn the motor over several times. There are a few in the rear aswell. They are made for the "engine" weight, NOT the full bikes weight. You can see several engine production line videos on you tube with several different engines.
