Hmmmm mine is a 2018 and I did not remove the OEM bar weights......
I did fit the barkbusters designed for Gen 2 into my Gen1 and removed the OEM weights so have a neat installation...here are the photos...no modifications whatsoever except using a different bolt

I tried the "correct" way but since they are risers on other risers I had to invert them to get them sturdy enough

To address / answer a few statements / questions in the above posts:

- On 2nd gens with the Barkbuster bike-specific kit you do have to remove the OEM bar end weights. If you are fitting the kit with the OEM weights you're doing it wrong and sacrificing a level of protection. To each their own, but my thoughts are if you pay a premium for a bike-specific kit you should use it the way it was designed; if you want to use the OEM bar end weights you can get by with a Tusk generic handguard kit for $50 and have a better level of protection. By using the Barkbuster kit and the OEM weights, the inner mounts by necessity get moved too far towards the ends of the bars. This doesn't allow adequate clearance for brake and clutch reservoir, and also puts the inner mounts on the outside end of the bend in the bars, which contributes to weakening the design.

- The bar ends come off with a 12mm allen.

- Watch how you route the wiring from the left and right hand controls. It seems appealing to route it above the inner mount and nestle it in that little divot of the inner mount, but the way that the wiring exits the controls (on the bottom), this can cause extra tension on the wiring and chafing. It's less visually appealing but more efficient to route the wiring under the inner mount.

- While not specifically mentioned in the thread, a lot of people mount handguards incorrectly. They need to be, essentially, parallel to the ground, not facing significantly up or down. Either direction can contribute to injuries (broken wrist if guards rotate up) or damaged levers and controls in a crash.

Thanks for sharing your insights MeefZah. (can no longer see the pics)
Which handguards do you like best?
I’ve been meaning to install a set of highway dirt bike guards for some time now. Expensive, but look the part. I do take my bike off road, so a worthy add to my OBMT crash bars. You mentioned Tusk, (I like their stuff). I always worry that certain equipment wont handle the weight of the S10.

His last post was June of 2021. You might try messaging him, but three years is a long time.
Thanks. I’m mainly interested in Highway Dirt Bike, BarkBusters and Tusk. No point in replacing the factory wind deflectors with a slightly better set of wind deflectors. I’ve dropped her a few times on dirt and lucky to not break a lever, yet.

If you're worried about breaking levers, just buy the folding ones. They are inexpensive and work great.

Thanks, those look decent enough. I also need wind protection for colder days and since the added crash protection has no downside apart from cost, I‘ve been looking at hand guards. Everyone knows BarkBusters, but HDB look pretty tough (not sure I want to tap my bars for their “big bolt” though).

I am about to do this same install (just ordered the 053 kit) and will update with the required parts (sizes, spacer, etc) to fit the 2nd Gen Guard on the 1st Gen bars.

I was wondering if anyone has heard of the bark busters breaking the clutch or front brake master cylinders in a hard fall. Looks like with the inner clamp running under and mounting right behind the master cylinders that may be a problem if the unit twists up in a fall. I thought about using them when I first bought my Super T but the way I have my bars mounted and the way I run my levers I would not have room to put them on the way they are designed. I would have to build my own inner mount. I was also worried about breaking the master cylinders too. I have them on both of my dirt bikes and they will twist in a hard fall. Just curious.
