Switched at around 2k miles on both my 2012 and 2014. Neither seemed to use any oil at all before or after the switch.

You might have included one other option?

Semi or blended?
Whatever the "middle grade" of Yamalube is?

Because I never "switched" to it. It is simply what my dealer used during my "service contract" while I drank their coffee and harassed the staff.
Sadly, the 3 years have run its course and they won't even consider selling me a new contract. Seems my high mileage use of the Tenere was far beyond their economic model for service contracts to be profitable. (I knew that it was when I bought it)

Still, I use the semi-synthetic Yamalube. Just because it makes everybody happy. Except now, I have to actually pay for it. :)

I used Shell Rotella T 15w40 on my 2012 with 3-3.5k oil and filter change intervals, and am running it in my 2014 now, with the same intervals.

Best,

Chris

I have switched both my 2012 and 2014 ES over to Full Synthetic (Blue Bottle Rotella T) at the first oil change with no issues.

I don't know that there's a right or wrong time to switch. Many cars including BMW's now start with synthetic oils. I plan on switching over on the service interval after the 500 mi service as that will be done by the shop and they'll use what the book tells them to. When I do it, it's synthetic all the way.

I run what the manuf specifies. I've run 6 bikes from new off the floor to over 100k miles each. None recomended synth so I didn't use it. I did/do run a JASO MA oil. My Viper and Honda Hybrid require synth from the factory. Both have over 150K miles and have only had synth oil. My S10 will never see synth...rotella is JASO MA approved.

I drained the factory oil at 250 miles, then ran Honda GN4 10W40 until 1200 miles, then switched to Amsoil 10W40. No issues at all. The engine burns no oil and runs great. I'm a believer in full synthetics and a fan of the Amsoil brand.

I changed to full synthetic 10W/40 Mobil 1 at 3000 miles. (Cost of a quart is over $10 in central florida car part shops)

note: seems to shift easier that the 10w/50 Yamalube synthetic blend but may be just the fresh oil effect. also seems the radiator fan comes on less and shuts off sooner .. again no scientific experiments.. just a gut or wishful feeling

Just put 10/40 Castrol Full Synth in at 3400 miles. Switch diff fluid as well to mobil 1 synth 75/90. Didnt notice any change in shifting.

Rotella T-6 every 4k miles with filter change every other. Shifting gets a bit notchy towards the end of the oil's life but that tends to make me focus on being smooth. Out of curiosity, I tried the conventional Rotella for a few hundred miles. The bike was very reluctant to shift with that oil.

2013 S10 with 20,000 km (12,500 miles) and always been on Castrol 15/50 semi-synth (weather can be hot in Malta). Why do I use semi-synth? Mainly because the service kit provided by Yamaha includes semi-synthetic oil and I guess they know what they're doing.
