Saskatchewan Government Insurance wants to install telematics devices on the bikes of several hundred volunteers.

The device records driving information such as speed, braking, mileage and location.

Donna Harpauer (HAR'-power), minister responsible for SGI, says it's the first step to see if insurance based on usage could work in Saskatchewan.

This will suck. It never ends, tracking, watching...

LOL, there's one G8 in Lodi, I've done his suspension work for him. I guess he wanted it track ready because he stiffened the hell out of it.

I actually put those little devices in my trucks and wife's car. Knowing this:

They will never see the vehicles with activity after 7 or 8pm. (midnight to 4am I heard is a big red flag)
They will consider my trucks as driveway queens. Extreme low use. I ride motorcycles.
And the wife, while I think she should slow down because she drives too fast on our rural 30-45mph roads, the device doesn't know the speed limit. It just knows her car commutes at the same time every day and is driven "adult style"

It only lasted for a 30day window.
I feel that I used their own "program" to manipulate better pricing.

Once you pull the device and return it, the big brother part is over.

Having said all that, it would be a complete disaster if you put one of those on my bike(s). In 24 hours, the data collected would completely unravel my false old man pokey image.

Well, I usually ride my bike or use my Suburban for daily transport tasks... But I've got an '09 Cadillac CTS-V for times when i want more 4-wheel entertainment. Dunno' about rear-wheel juice, but GM claims 556 HP/551 ft/lbs from the 6.2-liter supercharged ancient ol' pushrod lump under the hood. ;)

It's comfy for trips. ::008::

Another Saskatchewan s10 owner. We slowly but surely increase our numbers to a viable population. I hope they don't make it mandatory on all bikes

::009:: ALERT!!

Why would any rider volunteer to put something like this on their bike? I only see more regulations and biased data come out of this. Think about it... when did any government study give us more freedoms, especially as riders? Just my two cents ;)

the saskatchewan government insurance want to jack up bike insurance by around 75%. to insure a 1000cc sportbike with the proposed rate will cost $5600 per year. you can only insure for the summer if you want, so it will cost you $466 per month. they say bike accidents and injury costs are way to high and car owners should not subsidize the bikers - so they are looking for ways to figure out how to make it more fair for car drivers. the insurance we pay cover everything - injury, rehab, income loss/replacement etc for life. us bikers say that we are not "at fault" in the majority of accidents and the car drivers cause the accidents. i guess the insurance says "ok, prove it. lets see if you drive within the speed limit" O:)

I can't really comment on how things ore over in the U.S. but my experience here in the U.K., leads me to believe that almost the entire insurance industry is populated by rats………….hence the odour!
Here is how it works over here.........

The "parent" country (that would be your country) tries out a new nanny state great idea, usually based on fairness and\or equality.
Within some timespan, the "teenagers", (that would be us rowdy yanks) are influenced to give it a try as well, all without acknowledging any kind of parental influence, yet copying the fairness and equality mantra. Usually starts on one of the coastal states.

All the states stuck in-between just roll their eyes and make comments about "not here we ain't".

But give it time. :)

We got those stupid "no way in hell in Texas" traffic cameras now.

Thanks a lot mom. (The Queen)

If my insurance company wanted to charge me 5K a year to insure my bike I'd be looking for a new insurance company. I have USAA for everything except my bike...(if you've been in the service or a parent was GET USAA...,they are awesome to deal with and cheap) However they don't insure motorcycles...just a policy they have had forever but they have a deal with Progressive I don't pay much for collision and liability on 2 bikes...less than $300 a year for both bikes '12 S10 and an 06 KLR650. I am an old guy who is married and have a clean driving record so that helps a bit....
