Ever seen anything like this? Just came out this morning and saw the leftside crash bars just cracked on their own. No drop. No impacts. Had them installed by the dealership 2 years ago while having other service completed. A bad batch from AltRider? Improper install (over-torqued) by dealer? WTF?

It’s nobody’s fault, IMOP. I’ve seen this in “industry” before. The angles were off a bit and then under constant stress. With time, heat, vibration, it can happen. You can see the crack not perpendicular to each side. That was the difference it was “off”……. I would not stress it at all. A pro welder can fix this at the ‘correct’ angle in five minutes. Probably for a few beers. No biggie.

A local guy just said he'd do it for a positive Google review. My concern was whether they might be over-torqued and possibly damaging the engine and frame. I might loosen things up and re-snug.

No damage to the frame or anything else... just slightly off and stress.... :) (LOL... Im not laughing at you,,, just makes me smile... these bikes are WAY stronger than this one little bracket breaking. My buddy flipped his Tenere off a mountain when we road the AZBDR. The bike was down the side and upside down for 15+ hours. It was drug up the side of the mountain by a rescue truck with a 30K winch... Once up the hill, we got it started the next day and we continued on to Mexico and then road both bikes all the way back to Texas.......... He road that Tenere another 30-40K miles with no issues...... (just as an example : - )

BTW, I suggest this is welded on both sides.. (all the way around) Otherwise it will crack again just to the side of the new weld (one day) I would suggest TIG welding, but not a deal breaker.....

Proper fix: (I only mention this incase you don't know, and you have some 'info' before someone messes with your bike)

clean the surface
weld the out side (this will hold the correct angle)
let it cool 90-95% of the way
take off the bars
clean the remaining three sides
tack the back
check the fit (depending on the welder, it could have pulled and at this stage wont fit again, have to check)....... if it slips right on, move on
finish welding the three sides
repaint to desired color

**these are stainless, should use stainless fill rod

I'm curious what alt has to say. Hopefully they will stand up and send you a new set. I'd wait to hear from them before getting it repaired.

The downside to titanium is that it's relatively brittle. That's why we don't make our subs out of it. You're only going to get so many dives/surfaces before cracks develop. Russia doesn't care and uses it on theirs.
