I installed the Alt Rider Crash Guards.

Really nice pair of guards. The construction is very nice and clean.
Silver Stainless steel looks very nice too with it's slightly matte finish.
Above all they fit so damn well. Very snug fit and the right fender covers are removable with the bars on.
It really looks like a lot of thought went into designing these bars.

Anyway I saw that they also make an upper crash bar that is an add-on for these crash bars.
I like the idea of some extra protection high up and it looks like they would be good for mounting
additional lights on.

Has anyone installed the upper crash bar? How do you like it.
Is there enough room to mount light clamps on the tubing once mounted to the bike?

Judging by their crash bars it looks like they make some really nice stuff.
Someone please hide my check book and credit cards..... ;)
Hi Fred, I have been considering changing my Yamaha Engine guards for some AltRider ones, (I don't much like the look of the Yamaha ones)

Were yours an easy fit and what do you think of them now and did you fit the upper guard section

Also I have PIAA lights fitted to my Yam bars and was wondering if there was enough space to hang them under the headlight without the upper Altrider bar section fitted

Thanks Rog

They've been advertising the "uppers" for a long time now since the beginning of the year. Surprised they aren't available yet…

I'm curious though what kind of impact does that upper crash bar prevent? Meaning what situation would you have to encounter for that bar to save something?

I'd say the upper bar is designed to further spread the force of an impact.

The upper bar would also provide more options for mounting Farlkles.

Installed the Altrider Body Guards this morning. Seem to fit better than the 2012 version. More room around the side panels. Sure was nice to have another person to help with the install.

Considered the Upper Guard but was thinking I could wait and add it later. I agree that it is more for keeping the Body Guards from collapsing but will work for adding high mounted off-road lights. Too high for mounting driving lights.

"Still in development"? Now they say 2nd qtr 2016.

In one week, it will have been a full year since I placed my order. I emailed them asking for an update...no response. ::007::

I have been waiting to buy them too. It looks like Altrider is in no hurry to "develop" them. I'm not sure what they'll protect, but they look cool and will give us something else to grab onto when we try to pick up our bikes!

Hmmm ... I even sent them an email sometime ago "suggesting" that it would be useful if the website showed some pictures with the new Upper Bars in place so that we ... the potential buyers ... could get a better perspective of what they actually looked like on the bike ;)

I got a nice reply saying that they would forward the suggestion internally ...

Well seeing as no such shots have appeared on the product page and reading the comments above I seriously wonder if this new development has ever made it past the digital design and rendering phase :(

And I note that the availability has just blown out to the 3rd quarter 2016 ... I guess we just have to wait faster ::)

I've spoken to Altrider many times about these bars.... From what I understand the bars are basically done and built.. The hang up has always been the "clamp".. I think they have designed and re designed those things twenty times.... its there own design so that is tons of work for molding, machining, Etc.... they are working on them..

Very interesting information ... I must admit that the clamps do look quite complex with separate inner ferrules.

Hopefully the clamp design will provide positive mounting of the upper bars without unduly marking the lower bars at the attachment points.

Still marked as in development, expected Q3 2016.

From a look it seems there are two iterations of the upper design, now attaching in 4 places, any idea when this changed?

Searching on here/google brings up nothing but what I guess is the older 2-clamp design.

The design went from 2 clamping points to 4 a long time ago, maybe almost a year. I've been on the waiting list at Revzilla for at least that long. The original design was shown on Altrider and Revzilla websites, then both changed to the 4 clamp design. The price went from $273 to $306 at that time. They claim the delay is caused by the clamps themselves. Funny, because they use the same type of clamp on some of their BMW crash bars. There really isn't much to those clamps to be delayed this long.

Looks like they are now available. Mine are scheduled for delivery on Thursday, 10/6. They were in development so long I almost forgot about them.

These upper bars went quite long time evolution from two mounting points to four, which adds up strength to the cage. I am expecting upper bars to arrive soon along with lower ones and some other things.
On the pictures they look so much attractive, will see when installed.

Has anyone installed already?

I got mine in early October. I put them on by myself, but it would have been easier with some help. They fit up nicely and look great. Just like the Altrider lower bars the workmanship is first rate and the welds are very nicely done. Altrider must have given up on designing their own clamps and went with some purchased ones. If I remember correctly, the clamps are pipe clamps made by a German company. I have a matte grey bike and went with the silver bars. It really puts the finishing touch on the bike. The plastic cover on the right (battery) side can still be removed with the upper bars. I would have posted pictures, but I have to admit I don't know how. One of my winter projects will be to mount some driving lights on the upper bars. $300 for the uppers and $400 for the lowers is a lot of cash, but if you're like me, I just had to have them.

Do you have a photo of your's mounted? I want to see if they would block a light bar mounted below the headlight. TIA

One of these days I'll make an attempt at posting some pictures, but I'm not sure how to do it. Until then take a look at Altrider's website, they have a series of pictures of the bars on a white ST. Note that there is not a mounting tab under the headlight. Some of the early prototypes had one. I am really behind the times on the smart phone thing. I don't even have a cell phone. I have a satellite phone that is only activated for trips and I have made 2 calls on it. The poor coverage and the poor reception with cell phones just turned me off. My buddy from Florida can call me on his cell,(I live in Wisconsin) but I can't call my daughter who lives 10 miles away because of some mysterious dead spot. So, I do have a digital camera that I can use to load some pictures on my computer. Then we'll see what happens.
