Yeah, good point. Up here, between May and August, I wouldn't worry too much about riding in the dark. ::025:: What will get you in some spots, and at a particular time of day (depending on what direction you're going) is the setting sun in your eyes. Bummer. R
The other thing that will get you is the animal traffic on the road.

Re: Alaska..2015?

I like to drive about 8 hours a day...68 mph is good for me. I need to stop and have lunch..dinner...diabetic issue. I smoke a pipe on occasion...along with a cigar. But..neither is really necessary. I do not snore..a throat operation ended that. I like to stop and look at things. I figure if you are going on a trip one should see what they are driving through. I like to take a water break on occasion. I am pretty much flexible. I am not a camping nut so If I never saw the inside of a tent it would not bother me.
I realize that when one travels with another person there will be some "give-and-take" over a long trip. I do not like to "burn down canyons" but simply drive down them. I did all of that when I was 23!

Mrpete, that is exactly my style. I don't like to rush to the destination coz its always the journey for me. I click lots of pictures and I am planning to buy a Sony hdr-as15 for my video shooting !

I am interested in a 2015 trip to Alaska. I would need a range of days aprox 6 mos prior to get vacation time. Anyone from North Texas interested to plan a trip? I am 59yrs, non smoker, like beer and coffee in moderation. Hotel or camping is good for me. Renovator20

I am planning on going to AK the summer of 2015. Am flexible also... Hopefully some of you are going to the rally in Ark that starts tomorrow... I'm 246 miles away tonight and heading there tomorrow. Can discuss details in person there... I like the S-10 group idea!!!

Im probably the youngest interested in this ride (turned 50 today). All my buddies either don't want to go or don't feel they have a bike that could handle the trip. I'm pretty flexible in the give-and-take category when it comes to other people tastes. Time away from home would be my biggest question. Living in southwest Washington….3 weeks there and back sounds about right. This has been on my list for years and I aint getting any younger so count me in as "moderately interested".

Why don't we just make next year's rally a "mobile rally" running up to Alaska?

I like that idea.

I think I have you beat nwryder12, I'm 29 and would love to make this trip. Just don't know if I can pull that much vacation time...maybe I'll get lucky and switch jobs at a convenient time.

Just picked this up off Amazon for $13.39
Very well worth it.
It is very detailed up to the Yukon boarder.
It shows sections of the old Alaska Highway that the Milepost does not tell you about.[big loops that you can take]
I wish I had this when we rode up there last summer.
It also shows very remote roads off the Cassiar that very few riders have ever seen probably.
Now I need to go back. :D

When I rode to Prudhoe Bay I picked up a half dozen older issues of the Milepost and left them with friends and family so they could keep up with where we were. The older issues can be picked up on Amazon for 4-5 bucks ea. and while some of the info is outdated, the maps and mile markers are still good.

When it comes to a trip to Alaska I have the time and the bike but I'm not quite sure about the expense. The trip for me would start and finish in Southern California and there would be no camping - motels only.
I'm guessing 20 plus days and a total expense of $5,000 to $6,000? Is that about right or should I figure more time and more $$$?

Ouch!

I did 2 weeks in Italy and spent half that! (Stayed outta Rome and Venice, of course)

Even OZ, with it's super high minimum wage, was cheaper than your estimate.
Keep in mind that I think a Best Western is a fabulous place to sleep. :)

When I'm on the road, my burn rate is less than when I stay home. At home, my kids soak me. (I'm a push over)
If I could STAY on the road, I could retire and stay on the road. lol

Good news for sure. I always figure on the high side, lobster dinners and 4-star hotels. The reality is Denny's and Motel Six. Hey this trip is looking better and better all the time.

Are you insane? ??? Seriously, $250 to $300 per day is huge money. You can do extremely well on half that. If you can find just one roommate for at least some of the trip your expenses go way down.

Try this, take a look at a map and pick a few potential stopping points on the way. Then go to hotels.com or one of the other sites and search hotels. You will likely find you can get some pretty decent rooms for about $60 to $70 per night.

One thing I did last year on my 4700 mile trip is sometime around noon I would look to see what towns were 3 to 6 hours away. I would then do a search and book a room. This method offers tremendous flexibility and ability to find some great options along the way.

My AK trip was 21 days 10,250 miles and the cost was $3300. That's $157/day and it was just about evenly split between gas, motel rooms (1/2 of a room) and food. There's not much else to spend money on, on this kind of a trip. I think my souvenirs amounted to two teeshirts and maybe $20 worth of stickers. Ride, eat & sleep, repeat every day until back home.

::008:: I was going to throw out there about $150-$200 a day.

In 2011 Eric and I spent just over $100 a day with no motels and a lot of free camping. 18 days. and not much eating out.
Fuel was very high in 2011 hope it's a lot less this summer.
I could see close to $4,000 if you motel every night and like to eat nice. in a 21 day trip.

Be aware that cell service & internet is virtually non-existent 5km outside most AK hwy communities if they have it at all :))
So , if hoteling , rooms are in VERY short supply in good weather season. so pre-plan , book in advance or at least phone ahead the night before from your motel/hotel (you won't be able to from the road)
BTW fuel $$ is dropping like a rock right now, but it's still cheaper than rooms or restaurant food on a per day trip
