Like many of the others this is a bucket list trip for me. I would be interested in camping, but worried about the wildlife (mostly human but bear too). Does anyone carry a pistol in case of danger (if so what cal)? I am 37 have two small kids so this trip is quite a ways off for me. I can live vicariously though. Hope to hear/see updates on this trip.

Hand guns in Canada equals "free room and board" without the door key!

I'm told that you can with proper authorization! Can legally carry a +6" barreled revolver. No autos! I recently have read that!

http://canada.usembassy.gov/traveling_to_canada/bringing-weapons-into-canada.html

Hope I understood that correctly!
I hope some Canadanites will straighten us out on this but I called them on this and they told me no way.
Copy And Paste here
A restricted firearm may be
brought into Canada, but an Authorization to Transport (ATT) permit must be obtained in advance from a Provincial or Territorial Chief Firearms Officer. The ATT will not be issued for hunting or self-protection purposes][/. doesn't look very promising.

After jumping through beaucoup bureaucratic hoops, you MAY ... I stress MAY ... be allowed to bring a handgun across the border. But that will only allow you to carry it through Canada, not take it out and use it. Research carefully. A handgun is a restricted weapon in Canada. I seriously doubt you would be able to legally take it out of storage within Canada, even if you were allowed to bring it across the border, which is doubtful. If you want to get it into Alaska, mail it. Whatever you do, be truthful about what you're doing with the border crossing people. They can actually assist you, or they can become your worst nightmare. They have more power than God. Or even my wife. Good luck. RR ::024::

You may be able to transport one through but it would be the most direct route through Canada to Alaska. I think if you are as much as a half mile off of the direct route you're screwed. Do yourself a favour and leave them at home. I would love to own one but it's a serious pain in the... The gear you carry down south makes me chuckle, spare this a few of those and my .40 cal Glock. You guys have the best laws and weather.

To mail / ship a handgun from lower 48 to Alaska you must use a FFL (Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer) at both ends and both ways.

Can you strap a rifle on the side of a motorcycle and transport it through Canada?

The wife and I both have or restricted and there is no way I can see bringing a hand gun across the border. Shot gun is no problem with the right paper work and it has to be the right lenght. This is what I will be taking.

Possibly, but then you would have to adhere to Provincial hunting legislation. You would likely need a hunting licence from each Province that you pass through. I'm not sure, but better check it out. They don't make it easy. Canada has a great fear of firearms in general. Yukon is pretty relaxed about all this stuff, but the Provinces get quite perturbated about it. R.

That is why you hide your handgun inside your airbox, right? Right? ok, maybe kidding. But what border agent is going to pull your tank up and remove the airbox? Kidding.. right?

Alaska is wonderful and has incredible riding. However, it ain't the "last frontier" it used to be. There's Walmarts and McDonalds and if you break down you can call AAA. And yes, there are paved roads. If you need a gun, buy a 12 gauge at a Fairbanks pawn shop for 80$ and sell it back for $60 when you are done. You can buy a cheap 22 at Walmart and keep the receipt and return it. Guns are fun but a real hassle to travel with. Do not !!, get caught shooting anything bigger then a squirrel in Alaska.

Also, it should be said that any trip through Alaska ain't bad but don't forget about Canada. The ride thru the Canadian Western Territories is awesome

You don't need a hunting licence to carry a shot gun on your vehicle , has to be locked and out of sight un loaded.

I seen Alaska the same as you. It is not the Last frontier compared to the Yukon , Northern BC and the NWT it was almost disappointing how busy it is.
My son and I actually liked northern Canada better. Remote!!

OK. Completely stored. Hidden. Tucked away. Locked up. Ammo separate. Just check it out thoroughly long before you depart, is all I'm saying. Canada is an entirely different world when it comes to firearms. Contact the Canadian government and tell them exactly what you want to do. Then do that to the letter. If you are prepared, you should have no trouble. But don't just show up at the border with a firearm and expect things to go smoothly. Yukon is pretty lax about this stuff, but you have to get through B. C. before you get here. Just be prepared and follow the instructions to the letter. It's doable, but it can be a real pain in the @$$. Good luck. R
