I suspect that many Dealers tend to check the valves and even if they are borderline leave them cause they really don't want to have to do them. But they charge you the same money whether they adjust or not. Reason I do my own although I had a small problem last time. But I'd do it again , no problem. I'd just be a little more careful releasing the CCT.

Had the valves checked at the dealer (22,700 miles)

Exhaust
Cyl #1 .25 T .25 T
Cyl #2 .25 .25

Intake
Cyl #1 .12 T .12 L
Cyl #2 .12 L .12 L

Will check them again in 30,000 more miles though I doubt I will have this Super Tenere ES. A 2018 ES is on my wish list. Or a 2017 FJ-09 now and a 2019 Super Tenere ES

The spark plugs looked new other than acceptable color.

I am curious as to why I cannot see the results of the poll.
Did you vote? If not, that's why.

OK thanks, However according to the OP the post was to give people a tool to decide whether to skip the first valve check. I can't truthfully answer the poll if I have not done the first check.

Yeah, kind of not helpful in that way. As of 6/14/17 here are the results.

Yes. 17 (34.7%)
No. 18 (36.7%)

I skipped the first valve check. 14 (28.6%)

Well, that's info I didn't have before. Now I just have to make a call on what I want to do!

Imop. Yes, check them. Why would anyone want to ride another 25K with a valve out? I've checked a ton of bikes, and there are some that are out on multiple valves @ 25K. Why not not just check? Take care of the engine?

What are folks paying for dealer maintenance?
I'm trying to decide if this is something I can do with the manual or something I should bring to the shop. The cost will determine how much effort I will take to learn a new skill.

Thanks,

Just some engineering comments.....

Temperature can be an accelerator for valve seat recession (loss of clearance). The head temperatures really go up when 1) the ambient is high, 2) sustained high speed travel (80-90 mph on interstate), 3) sustained low speed travel (1st, 2nd gear stuff), 4) mixture ratio

The machining on the valve seats and valves are not perfect when new and are expected to "wear in" a bit for good seal.

Finally, there seems to be a tendency for people who check their own to say "I need adjustment" while when dealers do the checking "they don't need adjustment". I see this comment on so many various websites that it makes me wonder.

I won't be skipping my first adjustment and there is a logic when others say you can possibly skip your 2nd adjustment. I will do my own the first time but only if I still like the bike by then.

Skip or don't skip the first designated valve check.......

Some have, some haven't.
Some needed adjustment (or thought so) and some didn't need adjustment (or didn't think so)

I guess my point is this bike now has a substantial amount of history. It's no longer a new-comer.
It's proved not to be a bike that suffers valve clearance related issues. I think it all depends on how strongly the owner feels about KNOWING their valves are within a certain spec.

I'm a less worrying fella. Especially with THIS bike. It can take amazing abuse without nary a complaint.

Mine were all perfect center spec at the first check. The question as to whether you can do the check yourself depends. If you are careful and take your time, read the manual and read some of the tips posted on the forum it is not a bad job.
