Greetings! New to this this forum, here to get information cause I am very interested in a new Super Tenere. Took half the day off went to my local Yamaha Dealer and asked for a price with my trade in, 2009 Yamaha Tmax on a new 2012 Super Tenere.
Dealers price on the new Tenere is $10,899 and my trade in is $4500. with taxes and fees the out the door price is $6847.94
I am on the fence with a new bike, I need better long distance touring capability with hauling a passenger, where the Tmax falls short, don't want a cruiser bike, the other bike I really like is the Suzuki V Strom 1000,, but I like Yamaha as the better brand.
I was here reading this forum but the majority of the information is technical issues with brakes , tires and heavy engine carbon build up, what I was hoping to read was praise for this bike, I think I have a good price, but I don't want to have any problems with my new bike cause I know none of the Yamaha mechanics are capaible of fixing it.
Really, really LOVE the Yamaha Tmax I currenly own cause of its extreme handling, low center of gravity and wind protection, I hate to part with it and dealer refused a test ride on the new Tenere,,, plus all my riding friends don't want to ride with me cause I have a scooter now, but the Tenere will be a better bike than what they own and I will get respect.

Standing on the fence,,, what way do I jump off?
I am not here to have you guys to talk me into one cause I well understand you could care less if I would buy one or not, its nice to own a bike that nobody else owns, you get noticed, i understand that very well, so the less other people own the same bike you own the better it is for you,,, but I am about substance and a bike that does everything well and pleases me, not showing it off, but at the same time to get some respect by the bike I own.
Thank You for reading this,,, and you can let loose and tell me anything cause I won't get mad or insulted.

I've had my ST for 5months. Previously I had a 2003 Goldwing, R65 BMW,1972 CB 750, 1973 Norton Commando, 1972 Bultaco pursang, Honda CB350, and and an early Yamaha 175cc enduro. I enjoyed all the bikes. My tenere is a lot of fun. It is a good road machine. Does two up riding well. It can go off pavement as well as any 600lb machine can and I like the reliability of this bike. Make your decision and don't look back. Enjoy what you are riding and go places! It sounds like you are getting a good price.

not showing it off, but at the same time to get some respect by the bike I own.

There's a poll somewhere on this forum and you'd be amazed at what percentage of Tenere owners came from VStroms. We still have both the Tenere and a BigStrom and the Tenere is simply 2 generations newer improved, with better quality. Hands down. A world better when loaded with luggage and a passenger.

With respect to Mr. Max, if you think that bike has handling, you are in for a HUGE surprise my friend. Go find a Tenere at a dealer who WILL give you a test ride. In wind protection, the shorty screen of the Tenere will be about like that of the Max, but probably most Tenere (& VStrom) owners end up getting a screen or adjustable bracket to fit them and it's a well spent $150.

Every bike's forum has a pet topic and you will notice that ours is NOT breaking down in the middle of the Great Plains. We've got a large contingent (something like a third) who came from FJRs, ST1300s, and other big sport tourers and who enjoy using this big beast as a big sporty bike.

Guess what? They get less life on their brakes and tires. Separate those from the travelers, commuters, and regular folks. You'll notice people like me who get 15,000+ miles out of a rear tire and normal life out of their brake pads. One member here got 24,000 miles from a K60 rear tire!

I can only think of one thread/owner with heavy carbon issues out of all the owners here, and I seriously wonder about who he is getting his fuel from.

btw - Any mechanic who has worked on an FJR, which has been around for nearly 10 years, is at home working on a Tenere. The Super-T design borrows heavily from the FJR, which in turn has a some design borrowed from your Max. Go look at the shaft drives, how the trip computer works, etc. Our engine is roughly half of an FJR lay-out that's been upscaled.

You mentioned 2-up. My lady likes the pillion of the Tenere more than that of a Harley bagger and a GoldWing, and slightly more than the FJR because of the knees. On the Super-T, she can sit up, move around, lean against my top box, etc. We have intercoms and it went from my bike to our bike.

Even without the trade, that is one heck of an awesome price your dealer quoted you! One of the best I've heard. You can spend the savings on the intercom, side bars, luggage, and all sorts of other farkles that you'll get with any new bike.

Again, take the time to find a bike you can test ride and as Start Trek's Borg used to say "You will be assimilated."

I saw the Tenere on a poster 2 years before I bought mine. When I did buy it, I walked in, paid retail and my test ride was bringing it home. I have not regretted that impulse once. My only lingering worry is that, coming from a KLR which was very basic technology (Off-On and Volume), this bike is way sophisticated (ABS, ECU, TCS, and other scary acronyms) and I don't feel so comfortable drilling into it yet.
- Went to breakfast with a group of Tenere owners. One bike had well over 72K miles on the odometer. Not sure why that impressed me so, but it was a good sign.
- Push the starter button, the motor spins over 2 revolutions and it kicks off. Ten minutes after the last ride, or four weeks.
- Modding the bike is an addiction, not a necessity. Folks can stop any time they want to.
- I would post here in all caps if the key in the gas cap got slightly harder to turn one cold morning. Everything gets reported publicly here, and it's what folks want to talk about. If I had a personal note to add, mine's been flawless. Most folks find that the bike exceeds expectations. http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=1850.0] http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=1850.0
- Find the "Escape from DC" thread and spend some time living with an ST without buying one.
- I have to agree that that's an awesome price point.

Not sure what else to say without sounding too much sales-person-ish. I can only have one bike. At one point I had the perfect garage, 4 bikes for four kinds of rides but these are different days (I don't even have a garage) and I am very pleased with the Tenere as a 'composite' ride.

Where are you in PA? Maybe there's a get-together potential in your neighborhood.

12k+ miles in one year for me and not one problem except my addiction to farkling! When i describe the Tenere to people I usually very Utilitarian. It just does what its suppose to do. And they start looking sweet when you make them your own!

Go ahead and make the jump. I still have a KLR and only ride it to keep the battery charged. Harley Ultra Classic, ride it with my wife so she can ride in complete and total comfort on the back. Otherwise, the only thing I ride in the Tenere. The most fun bike I have ever ridden. I can't imagine anything else being as much fun as the Tenere. Tried the BMW GS1200 since my buddy let me ride his for an extended prior of time. It was nice, but the loss of sleep and money over fear of repairs bills scared me away from it. Buy the Tenere and enjoy riding even more.

T Max, this is really a fantastic bike, and you are being offered a really great price. All forums highlight a motorcycle's flaws, and as someone who has come off of the KLR for 5 years, I can tell you this bike is rock solid. This is the most boring forum I have ever seen in the sense that there are almost no manufacturer problems that this community or the aftermarket has to come up with solutions for. Aside from someone's bike rusting a bit after going by the ocean for a few weeks, and a couple of final drives seals leaking, all problems here are owner-created. No product is perfect, but this one is pretty close.

If you want to read a forum with bikes that burn oil, or have huge internal engine damaging incidents, and that don't start, go to KLR650.net and dig in. And the KLR has a reputation for reliability!

Get the Super Tenere - you will love it.

Do it - it's the only bike I've ever ridden that made me think about getting rid of all the others! It was my fifth bike (yeah, simultaneously - bad case of MBS) when I got it last June and I'm down to 3 now. It'll never replace the KTM 625 SXC but I only ride the KLR to keep the battery charged - or while the T is being farkled. I have 13,000 trouble-free miles including a trip from Texas to the Arctic Ocean leaving 4 days off the showroom floor, and anticipate 16-17,000 by the time the purchase anniversary rolls around.

PS: We LIKE others to buy the same bike - it confirms us as "well-choosing" early adopters!

I bought mine after a ride I went on, dealer supplied bikes for 5 days. There was alot of different bikes to ride on the trip. I was really interest in 990 2011 Superduke. Road it for 2 days and the switched bikes. I didn't really want to ride the Tenere, just didn't think it would work that well. I road it for the rest of the trip [California coast roads] didn't want to give it up. I was impressed, corners extremely well and is very stable. It's a hard bike to beat for the price. My bike before this was a Multistrada 1000 that I had tricked out BST wheels and such and I think this bike actually handles better.
As Scott has pointed out in other posts there are some people losing there minds on this site, lack of riding in the cold areas I guess. Quality wise Yamaha is still the best of the Japanese bikes.

$10,899 sounds like a killer price. Are there any other fees (freight and prep) besides tax on top of that?

Have you owned other bikes besides the T-Max? If not, the new Honda 700 is sort of a cross between a bike and a scooter.

>:D I'm the rider that his S10 blew up....Yamaha fixed it. I buy name brand, premium fuel. The fuel in the tank was tested by the Regional Tech Rep and was found to be perfect. Now...that THAT'S out of the way, Please get the Super Tenere...it's still the best bad azz bike I've ever ridden...you won't be sorry...it's a little high off the ground, but, I'm getting mine lowered with Soopy adjustable links pretty soon.....
(sorry, I get cranky when people second guess what I KNOW to be the facts ::009::)

I vote yes, Just bought mine this week after a 100 mile test ride last Saturday. Been looking at them for a month now and am coming off a 2009 Buell Ulysses. I cant believe how happy I am with the Tenere! I also had to pay 2K more than your deal.

Go
For
It!

I gotta defend the forum.

I put myself in your shoes and I am suddenly considering an S10 and know very little about it and have not test driven one. So I go into "research" mode. Fortunately, there is a dedicated S10 forum and it has several YEARS of posts to sort through to get a "feel" for what others are saying about it.

So I dig a little, and can't find anything throwing a significant red flag. Hmmm. That's impressive at glance.
I spend a few evenings expanding my research. I start to see a few characters develop. Like a book or movie, there IS a cast. But still, nothing significant comes to the surface to worry about.

Keep looking. Look as long and hard as you want. You aren't gonna find anything scary. It starts to be the most revealing trait of this bike.

I'm surprised this forum would scare anyone away from the Tenere. So I'm a tiny bit surprised it is the forum that gave you pause.

Would make much more sense if a potential buyer asked "what are yaw NOT telling me. There has to be something that can go terribly wrong."

Nope.

Having said all that there ARE some 1-off issues that occasionally crop up for a single owner. But nothing systematic.
