I had the bike in for its 2nd valve check yesterday. Intake was still right on the money at .005. The exhaust side has tightened just a bit - at 28k exhaust side was at .009 (where it is supposed to be). This time it was between .008 and .009. Will probably need to adjust at least the exhaust side at the next valve check interval - 78k.

Chris, you're a machine.
I only have a paltry 21.5 KM on mine, the canadian winters do not help :-[

BTW, just like at the first valve check, all 4 plugs definitely needed to get swapped out.

I hear ya on the winters. :D Last winter was more or less a non-event down here. I really hope for the same this year!!

Bring your bike down for a visit... I got plenty of space! ;)

I love this bike. The brakes are impressive too - more than 50% left on the original front pads!!! I've never had a set of front pads last this long!

I really don't beat on my Tenere.
I bet with these given results that a lot of us never really should have to check the valves!
Just run the thing into the ground. Even if the clearance is off more then Chris's findings, I bet the bike will run & be ok. forever!

I checked the valves on my KLR at 9000 miles & they were in spec. One was on the tighter side.
At 21,000 I checked & set them all on the loose side. I'm at 32000 & prolly won't ever check them again. Let the thing die.
It has been indestructable the past ten years. My valve cover weeps now though after having it off twice without replacing. no biggie.
I've been straying away from anal maintenance. Jap crap bikes, cars & trucks seem to run fine forever with just changing the oil and keeping the abuse lower then redline.

I don't understand, If they are Crap bikes, cars, and trucks, why DO they run forever despite the abuse we give them?

Perhaps they are NOT crap, but indeed a well built machine, built to handle abuse?

...I know!
I love when ya hear the term jap crap, from some doo rag knuckle head wearing chaps that rides a pos iron dinosaur vibrator.
Jap bikes are not crap. They are the most reliable, bang for your buck, out of any motorbikes imo!

I started on jap bikes, but went through a phase & had a few hd's which were all junk breaking down, problems all the time.
Started loosing my passion for riding because I feared I could not ride out of state, county & town without a leak, part break, something rattle off.
I bought a VMAX, & fell back into really riding again.
Didnt have to take a mini tool box with me heading out on the days ride!

I spent 18 months on a BMW which is the same, just a constant worry about what may go wrong next, how much the next service will cost and will it last a two week trip without breaking down. I wa slucky enough to not have a major issue or get stranded, but I probably spent more on repairing that bike in 18 months than I had on Jap bikes in the previous 10 years.

I have found most bikes can skip every other valve check, had a few kwaks where they should be done at 12k, and normally some shims would need replacing probably settled from new) but at 24k your almost certainly wasting your time and can leave them until 36k.

As 24k is a large interval and only every 3-4 years for me I will probably follow the schedule, but if I clocked up 20k per year I would probably skip the 48k check and if they had not moved at 72k assume they are never going to

...and Maryland riders don't mess around with girly Iron Butt rides. They already have titanium azzes, so why bother.

I only have a paltry country to ride around, our winters don't help much, then again neither do our summers, almost half of my miles get done during a two week escape to Europe.

If I had more decent biking roads nearby with less cars and better weather I would probably do a lot more, if I was lucky enough to live somewhere like the Alps / Black Forest / Pyrenees I would need my own oil rig.

Buelligan, you are onto something we all know, not WFO though!! I remember years ago in the Toyota SUpra's of 1993-1998 with turbo's that they came from factory with 300 and some HP, but when guys dug into the engine and added major mods, they found the bottom end was designed to withstand upwards of 1000 HP. That is the way things should be designed, to last long time!!!

And that's been proven time and time again with those Supra's... You see *STREETABLE* ones regularly at events like the "Texas Mile" doing well over 200+ MPH. Those things can be built into absolute *ROCKETS*!!! ::008::

Did you run the plucs to the valve adj or change them at 12k? I am at 20k miles and on OE plugs. Wondering if they will go the distance of if i should suck it up and change em?

I aint even had the tank up yet.

I ran the plugs for the full 26k between valve checks. At the first valve check (roughly 28k) one plug was a bit fouled, and the others just needed changing. This time there was no fouling, but all 4 needed changing. At least for my riding, etc. the plugs will go the distance. YMMV. :D

My Super T now has ALMOST 52K and I'm doing the second valve check. Nothing was needed at the first check. I asked the dealer at the first check to tell me what the clearances were but... I got a "Oh I forgot".

Anyway, all intake are A-OK but three of the exhaust are being changed. I need three 195 shims and didn't have any so will get them from a dealer tomorrow.

All else is cool. Damn, that cam chain adjuster is a bear to get in the locked position... whew got it! Wasn't easy. Is there a trick that I don't know?
