Some (or many) of us in the US are at the first (or second, in Chris's case) 24,000 mile service interval. For those who have had it done, what sort of prices are your dealers charging? Anyone doing it themselves?

Was wondering about this myself. I am due in about 300 miles. Always been too scared to check/adjust valves myself, thats one thing I end up going to the dealer for.

When the time comes, I'll do my own. Did it on the FJR and every other bike I've ever owned, shouldn't be any harder on the ST. Checking and shimming/adjusting valves on most motorcycles does not require mad technical skills. Just follow the directions in the service manual. You'll save youself hundreds of dollars and you'll know the job was done correctly.

I don't believe there will be any need for valve adj at 24000 miles unless your just ringing the piss out of it .
Mabe plugs and a fork oil change . New brake fluid and thats about it . I will check my own valves when the time
comes . If any one has a valve thats out of spec please post your mileage .
Thanks

I put 87K miles on my FJR. I did a valve check at 82K and they were still in spec. I suspect the Tenere will be just as solid.

I definately rang the piss out of my FJR and a guy who knows a lot more about motorcycle engines than I told me that lugging it around will cause more premature wear than running it hard, including valve seat wear, as long as you're not constantly banging it off the rev limiter.

Perhaps we have someone here who can confirm or deny this.

My local dealer quoted me $425 for the valve check. The Victory dealer next door with the 5 star Yamaha tech quoted me $375. I should have done it then, as the dealerships merged under the same owner and the great tech moved to the Yamaha shop where the work will cost me more. Lost a great parts guy at the Victory dealer too. So far they are still charging $9 for tire mount/balance with wheel off the bike at the Victory dealer, ($24 for the same job at the Yamaha dealer). I hope that stays the same, but doubt it will. Might have to call around next time.

I am about a month out of getting my 24k service. How much damage should I be preparing my pocketbook for? I am thinking of letting them do everything the manual calls for.

I would say $400.00 sounds right.
Get it done mine needed shims at 25k and besides you get the throttle synchronized new plugs.
I did my own air filter change.
Then you good for another 24k.

Admitting that you have a pocketbook is enough in itself!
Trust me I didn't want to dish it out!
My 2010 1050 Triumph Tiger was every 8k miles then 12k and honestly at 40+k it needed just a small amount of adjustment just close to off specs.
I had my local trustworthy Mechanic work on my Tenere I brought in the plugs and had a rear tire installed as well it came out to $350.00.
It needed shims and I didn't romp on the throttle with the Tenere as I did with the Triple Tiger.

The 26k interval service on my 2014 last month came to basically $460. That included general check over, valve check, air filter replacement, throttle body sync, brake flush and fill, fresh spark plugs, lube steering head bearings, lube swingarm pivot bearings. The bike did not need final drive fluid change or clutch fluid change, as I had taken care of those in advance of the service.

I replaced the rear brake pads at 32K miles. Front pads have over 70% remaining (according to dealer tech)

That sounds like a good price for what they did!
Did they have to shim the valves?

It's a 360 mile round trip from my house to go to TriCounty in Petersburg, West Virginia but they are totally worth the trip. Great techs and a good bunch of folks who are very into the bike.

Valves were still in spec. 8) On my 2012, the first valve adjustment wasn't needed until 78K. It needed another one at 100K.

Best,

Chris

My local dealer quoted a price of $350-$450 for a "valve check" and up to $650 if they required adjustment.
He admitted it was a "best guess" because he had not done any others.

When I bought mine in September, the dealer told me not to worry about it that after they had checked, the bikes didn't need the adjustment and to wait till the next interval.

If you can do it yourself that's fine but just do it.
Some need adjusting some may be still within specs mine needed shims and I didn't beat the crap out of my bike.
Cheap gets you nowhere I say.

Just peace of mind is better than did I do the right thing.
