Hmmmm... Spoken by a rider who has never owned one.

I have to agree with Karson. The number of people who have actually complained specifically about the clutch vibe issue is infinitesimal compared to the number of Super Tenere's sold, and I think that the very, very overwhelming majority of Super Tenere owners think their bikes are wonderfully smooth, especially for a parallel twin. I have over 39,000 miles on mine, and I think it is one of the smoothest twins I have ever ridden, period. And I've met a lot of high-mileage Super Tenere owners - like sail2xxs with over 120,000 miles on his - and you never anything about any "clutch basket problem".

Did Yamaha make some changes to the clutch in 2014? Yes, according to their new model info, but so far I know of no one who has actually had a 2014 apart to see in detail what all has changed. Until then no one will really know the depths of the changes. There are some 2014 model owners who have had earlier Super Tenere models, and so far I can't recall seeing any one of them making any posts saying "Wow, the 2014 model sure has a whole lot less vibration, and especially that clutch! The clutch vibes sure are a lot less than those dastardly 2012's and 2013's!" ::025::

Point is, for anybody out there shopping for a Super Tenere, don't have any reservations about the clutch on the 2012 and 2013 models. There's nothing to worry about there.

Yep, heading to 25k miles, and mine is as smooth as butter! Even with k60's :)

Oh, yeah... A gear indicator. That's always a great feature to pay thousands and thousands of dollars more for!!! ::025::

How did we all get along all these years without gear indicators on our motorsicles! And what about in standard shift cars and trucks! ???

If I'm not sure I'm in 5th I just give the gear lever another quick tug, but usually the tach and speedo tell me all I need to know... ::001::

Yikes, I am the new kid on the block. Did not intend to offend those who are happy with earlier models.
In my studying ON THIS SITE, I found a very compelling case for a design problem in earlier clutch baskets, including pictures, comprehensive extended research, and evidence of wear where it should not be.

So, can some of you "oldtimers" bring me up to speed? Is the fella who designed a fix for the "defective" clutch discredited on this site and no longer believed at what he found?

I was not aware that it is only a tiny number of folks who notice a vibration at around 3k rpm.

Help me get up to speed and know who is for real on here and who is not!!!!

And yes, I do not own a Tenere now, but am watching for a 2014 to show up in the area so I CAN own one.
But now, I don't know what to believe...........

Better yet. Go buy one of these ridiculously cheap 2012's for sale that are barely used and darn near fully farkled already.

Plus if you go 2012 you can get the fast black color.

Or the even swifter Blue. ::)

You should be offended that he did not offend you with a chapter or two of endless information. A three lines reply is almost unheard of from Dallara.

The annoying vibration happens 2800 to 3300 or so. The best information I read or saw was the youtube video from a possible vendor that has figured out what the simple fix is.

Geez, Tomato... At least I know how to properly quote a message in a post reply! ::025::

As for that "annoying vibration"... It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the vast majority of Super Tenere owners don't seem to have it, or even mention it.

As for the "simple fix"... It's not so simple, nor is it cheap or easy, either. I've corresponded at length with the gentleman in Britain that isolated the problem some bikes had, both about the "problem" and the "fix". You might want to invest a little time and effort in discussing the clutch with him, too, before you comment on how "simple" the modifications he, along with others, are implementing to try and help those few who have an issue.

For the record, the thread with the most info on this issue is - http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=7606.0

Life is too short, get what makes you happy. I had a 2012 and while it had some vibes, they weren't excessife and I liked the bike a lot.

I want a 2014 simply because they addressed the little issues I had w/2012 that were not that big of a deal. Hazards, better display, customizable display, cruise control.. Is it worth the diff in price for what you can get a pre-2014 for? Just depends on who's answering, I think it is but others would say no.

Texasten, I don't think you offended anybody at all. These guys are like the grumpy old farts playing checkers on the front porch, always talking shit. One thing they all have in common is the passion for the S10. They have only scared one guy away, but he washed his final drive out with kerosene, so don't do that and you will be ok! ::025:: Anyway it does not matter what you get. Test ride both if you can and go with what excites your sole! Isn't that what motorcycling is all about anyway? We will all love whatever choice you make and want to see pictures, so hurry up and pick :D There is no real faults with this motorcycle so don't fret. If you dig you can find maybe 1 blown motor( valve adjuster fault), 1 broken frame 2 blown clutches (may be operator error, undetermined) 2 abs pumps, a handful of blown fork seals, broken/missing spokes, faulty headlights, leaking final drive, and an OBSENE amount of trouble free miles on the MAJORITY of tenures on this site and adv. I just past two years ownership and about to hit 25k miles and that is average on here. Anyway welcome to the forum your going to love the Tenere.

I bought a 2013 in December 2013. didn't want to wait for what was differences I didn't feel I needed.

The suspension on the 14 is still a compromise as is any standard suspension. If I wanted better suspension I'd buy it to suit me and my riding style from Mr Ohlins or Mr Pensky et al
The gear indicator ....meh
The new screen, personally had no issue with the 13 screen
New indicators ....meh
New display ... meh

Mine is the same colour as the 14 so I like that :-*

I saved several 1000 $ buying a 13 and have spent some of that saving on making the bike personel to me/us and the type of riding/touring I/we do.

I've read all the stuff about juddering clutches and for a while thought I might have one but no, nearly 10k (kilometers) on the clock and she has smoothed out beautifully.
The only 'performance' mod I have done is the CJM and it has made a fantastic difference to the bottom end power (dont do much WOT) and am not worried about the leaning off at high revs (hardley ever up there)

Which ever model year you buy you'll add your own stamp on for sure just means you'll have more money to spend if you by the 13.

I first off want to introduce myself formally tomorrow on the Member Intro when I pick up my 2013 S10 at 10:30 am! I traded my 2012 FZ8 in, and contemplated for awhile... 2013 with Farkles or the 2014? It came down to this... No matter what you buy there will always be a better version the next year or thereafter. I'm saving over 3k on the 2013 over the 2014, which will allow me to make the bike my way and enjoy it for years to come.

I enjoy reading all of the post from the members, and smile when I read the comments about "what should I do"

The FZ8, while I only owned it for a year, had no windshield, non adjustable suspension, no gear indicator, no cruise, no ABS, no modes, etc., but I still love to ride it every time I had the chance. I test rode a Explorer, Tiger and F800 on demo days, but ironically have still never rode a Tenere.

I lose sleep waiting for it, and am so exited to pick the bike up tomorrow. While I liked riding the FZ8, I passed too many fire roads here in the NW, that I wish I could have turn left or right to explore new adventures.

Check back tomorrow!

This is similar to my own internal debate except I am debating between a new 2013 bare at the dealer for 11.9k vs a fully farkled 12 witness the full YeS warranty on the private market. Running the numbers on the loan that's what I can afford.

Part of the internal debate I have is if I buy the fully farkled bike I will argue with my wife once. If I buy the bare 13 I will have to argue every single farkle.

OTOH I have never owned a new vehicle. Once in my life would be nice. Plus the local dealer could use the business. .

I waited for the 14 model. A number of issues were resolved.
Granted, little things, but things that might disappoint you. Read the threads on the board and then make up your mind. I did. You'll love the factory cruise control. Stronger carry forward value, I would bet. Plus, the CC is warranteed. Good luck!

I would say 2013 and spend on the farkles...but that's me. There's no doubt the 14 has some advantages over the Gen1 - the biggest (to me) would be cruise control. That's not an easy nor inexpensive feature to add to a Gen1 Tenere.

The nice thing is: you can't go wrong either way...

I went with the 2013... I'm ending up w/ a Rigid light bar, Hella horns, Rumbux crash bars & skid plate and Jesse bags on my 2013 for less than they wanted for the 2014 models w/o all the farkles....
Now to finish breaking in....

When I made a list of needs that lead me to considering a Tenere cruise control and on the fly suspension adjustments were not on there. I don't like cc on bikes, and as a FF I just set the suspension to full load and leave it there. It's all about what's important to the buyer.

Don't get me wrong I would love to walk into a dealer and ride away a new bike, but with the depreciation of new motorcycles it's hard for me to justify for myself. I am glad others do because in a few years I will be buying your bike ::001:: Maybe when my kids are grown and wife gets a job I will feel differently, but for now, for me, someone else gets to drive it off the lot.

In my area the going prices are
14 tenere: 16k with all the fees
13 tenere: 12k new on the floor
Z12 tenere: 10.5 k new on the floor.

Here on adv bikes all farkled with 2300 miles are going for 10500-11500. There is one bike with 14k miles for 9.3 and everything I would ever farkle a bike with. Seeing as I plan on riding this bike till the wheels fall of resale doesn't worry me: dependability does.

So for me the difference between a pannier set and a new 14 at 17k and. A bike with panniers and maybe 3k miles is $5500 dollars. The new 14 would have to be radically better for me to justify that and for me the numbers don't add up.

Post-farl;ed is the way to go. I bought a used 2012 with 8K miles for under $12K. It had Jesse luggage and other farkles to the tune of about $3,500. Huge savings buying that way.

I bought a new 2013 two weeks ago. I will add a skid plate, Yamaha luggage, and a few other farkles. Buy cheap and ride a long time! I paid $11,600 on the floor, $13,700 OTD. California prcies are $1,000 more than bikes in other states -- just for anti-smog requirements in CA! I did not want to pay extra for electronic cruise control, nor electronic suspension. Not opposed to them, just know I have ridden for 45 years without them, happily; so I am ecstatic with my awesome 2013 Super Tenere I bought cheap!!! Well, cheaper than a new 2014 Tenere. From what I have read about the new Tenere, the new electronic ride modes are not an improvement, and the new increases in power are not noticeable. I can tell you truthfully, I am happy with the power and throttle response on my bike. Riding this bike is a pleasure in town, on twisty roads, and on the freeway. Bottom line -- buy what you love, and ride it! ::021::
