Re: Idle Speed Problem and Engine Stop! What should I do??

condonloft: Had the same EXACT symptoms. Check engine light registering Code 60 (throttle body actuator). Turned out remedy was a valve adjustment (52,000 mi). Exhaust valves were way out, one a more than the other. On hot restarts prolly no compression. Runs great now.

Re: Idle Speed Problem and Engine Stop! What should I do??

When mine first quit I was on freeway in #2 lane at night. Had to coast thru trucks in #3 & #4 lanes to get to the right shoulder.

Chief mechanic Tom at Pasadena Yamaha did the valve adjust last week. At the same time I had them install the new design cam chain tensioner. I don't do that type of wrenching anymore, so I paid dearly. About 6 hrs worth of labor plus parts (tensioner and 4 spark plugs). You are welcome to take advantage if the learning curve I paid them for. :'(

With the relatively low mileage you have, look at some of the other things in the trouble shooting page re: fueling.

Don't ignore the above problem just because you have low mileage.

Re: Idle Speed Problem and Engine Stop! What should I do??

Before you dive into the motor,...... On the Left throttle body there is a small black hose leading up to a small black sensor. Make sure the hose is connected tight on the brass nipple and the sensor. Or even pull the hose and make sure there is no damage to the hose. I've had bikes act like what you describe and it was the hose in some fashion or another... That sensor is very sensitive and will make the bike act up and die if there is any air leak.... Just an idea.....

Edopark, it sometimes takes investigative work to solve these problems. Especially on the Tenere. Nobody really has any issues, so when something pops up, usually very few people have any idea. Also dealers just don't see the tenere. People just put oil gas and tires. Not much service gets done on them. But keep reporting back here and everybody here is usually very good at helping troubleshoot.

Sorry to hear of your frustration. There are essentially three separate issues.
Hard start
Engine quits
Idle speed

As to your problem, you wrote that your first symptom each time was that the engine just quit and you could not re-start. First, what you describe is NOT the hard start issue which many people HAVE had. The answer to that one is to try to let the fuel pump fully cycle before starting, not do really fast engine starts for a few seconds then stopping it, and if it happens to hold the throttle open during the next start.

As one of the early owners here, it threw me when you wrote that many had similar issues. Of the combined quitting and idle speed complaints, I can only find 5 separate owners, even though the threads last for many many pages as people try to help them find their problems. Dirtdigger had the fuel pump changed and suspected that the cause was dirt from a trip to Alaska, while becoyote clearly found it came from an o-ring mis-installed after the fuel tank was painted.

Of the thousands of Teneres delivered, I would not call the remaining 3 "i got many information and similar issues."

Problems like this are really hard to troubleshoot and find. I can't add to the ideas proposed without more information, and really without getting hands on the bike. But there are some good ideas here and it's a positive sign that it hasn't happened again for the dealer riding the bike during his commutes.

Again, sorry to hear of your problem, I just wondered if there was something I missed that is wider-spread. Hang in there, because even if the mechanic is not sure what he did, once these issues go away, they tend to be gone for good.

Agree. I had a similar high idle problem and it was a cracked rubber cap on the right throttle body creating a vacuum leak.

Re: Idle Speed Problem and Engine Stop! What should I do??

I'm having the same problem, replaced some items like tps, accel sensor, fuel pump oring, and even tried with a borrowed ecu, checked the wiring, etc. I've been taken the bike to the dealer several times without success BUT, since the last time, the bike doesnt stop working on traffic lights, and the idle is steady, the only problem is that now idles at 2000 to 2500 rpm!!, runs smooth, without hung throttle, no cut offs on traffic lights, but idling very high. The bike odometer shows almost 44.000km. I'm thinking of valve clearance check, or the inlet temp sensor to get the idle back to normal. The rest of the symptoms were solved, apparently.

Re: Idle Speed Problem and Engine Stop! What should I do??

Hello Guys,

My name is Ed. from Los Angeles, I bought used Super Tenere only has 9500 miles, last month, bike was running fine for few days, and all of sudden engine stop at traffic signal, I try to start the engine again could not start the bike. I wait it for 10 mint and engine start and riding for 15 mint. then engine stayed at 3500 RPM, Until i touched the throttle again and speeding up and 4500 RPM then i want to reduce speed so i let it go the throttle... then rpm stayed at 3500 again.

I took it to the dealer and explained what happen to this bike. Dealer said never had this problem with any customer.. so they diagnostic the bike and nothing shows ! Machanic guys said might be the angle sensor problem.. so they changed the part. After i took out the bike from the dealer, I ran into stop signal, engine stop quit again. I try to start the engine,,,, i can not run the engine. so i wait it for 15 mint.. and engine start again and took it back to the dealer.

When i left the bike, service guys was watching bike was running low 800 RPM. and engine stoop. They saw the problem and they diagnostic the bike and shows errorcode they can not figure it out... so they contacted Yamaha Company. Yamaha company tech came and look and said, shows addminstarate errocode, they said to dealer service guy to reset it and diagnostic the bike again. Bike still at the shop and service guy is still riding back and forward work to home, and waiting for the idle speed problem... this is the information as of TODAY...

Since i have this issue and can not figure this problem... and few friend told me to search online about this site. I ran in to this topic, i got many information and similar issues, I don't know why YAMAHA COMPANY is not recall this issues...
I want it to gether all this information and try to show it to dealer and follow up with YAMAHA COMPANY... I don't know this is right way to resolve it??? This is safety issues.

So Far answer to this question:
1. Throttle body

2. Fuel Pump

3. ECU/ wire Harness

4. Wiring Loom

5. Installing New Rubber Cap on the vaccum port of the right side TB.

6. Valve Adjustment

7. TB Syn & CO

I don't know which one I should do first!!!

I m going to take this to my Yamaha dealer and ask which on first!!!!

Everyone... after dealer re-set. I took it for ride for few days, still having same problem... so I don't think Yamaha dealer can solve this issues... so i took it to auto mechanic friend, i told all these problem.. and mechanic think rack of battery problem.. so we changed to new battery. After battery changed it was okay for few weeks.... and still having same problem again... always happen at night time... I told him might be the charging system is not working well.. we thought was alternator problem.. so first i changed regulator, its been okay for 2days day time.. riding back night time same problem again...
1. code 60
2. engine stop
3. try to start ignition on ... keep show code 60
4. wait for 20mint... code 60 disappear and engine start and idle at 2000 to 3500
Still not solved....

looks like next thing i may try for valve adjust... :(

How is the humidity like at night?

I am thinking of the Plug coils being wet. Would be good to check the coils and plugs condition.

Can't find a code list in the manual. ::010:: On line search and a couple different Yamaha models shows code 60 to be an ECM error.

Re: Idle Speed Problem and Engine Stop! What should I do??

One fairly easy thing is to check the charcoal canister for water or fuel trapped. Brother in law had a similar problem after going down and getting fuel in the canister when the bike heated up the pressure was to high for the clogged canister and would shut off the bike. Let it cool a bit turned right back on until it heated up.

An issue I had on my old bike was removing the low jack that was interfaced with the ecu. Took months of trying to fix my bike with similar problems to yours. Took it to a shop and they could not figure it out either. They ended up Hooking up the ecu to run diagnostics and then reset it by accident, immediately and permanently solved the problem. If the bike has had any kind of security system or flash may want to reset the ecu. Good luck I know how frustrating it can be.
