OK I give up.......been having a bad few weeks and I have lost my patience.

I have a new Zumo 595, what is the secret to using this brick? I use to use Mapsource and tracks, easy easy.......Now I just cant seem to figure out how to use my decade of tracks. I can send them to the unit but what is the secret to following the line (track)? What the heck am I missing?

TIA

Hmm, strange...
I only did it once on my 595, but here goes.. (I'm curently on the Faroe Island, so I don't have the GPS here)
When send to 595 from PC, the 595 should say during booting that new trip have been found, and it you want to inport them. And of course you press "yes"
After that, you have to go to the place on the 595 screen where you start any given trip/route.
When starting the route, it gets a little confusing (way different than my old Garmin 550)......but as I remember it, the 595 ask what the next waypoint should be, and there you just choise the second waypoint (the one that is highlightet), and after this I believe it is ready to start the trip.

I saw that on a U-tube video, but mine did not do it.......I like to use tracks. Do you have to covert tracks into a trip?
?

Can you be more specific about what part of the process is being difficult for you?

Is it the loading of the track into the GPS? It reads like the attempt to follow the loaded, converted track, is the issue. It also reads like you have sufficient GPS experience with a previous device and SW system to know what you're doing with that system.

So, clarify for us. What specifically is wrong with using this one?

ok, fair enough....sorry for leaving out info.

So I use to use Mapsource on my 60 csx. I never really used BC as I am good at MapSource. I now have a new Zumo that HAS to use BC (inless you change settings in the Zumo to something else) Well the batt life stinks on the Zumo so I am using BC.

I have several tracks that I loaded to the Zumo, plus I have driven around town and have some (saves them daily). BUt I drew a track and sent it to the unit. How do I follow it? Must I convert the track to a trip?

I see this question. I'll ask a different question.

What is the ".dot" (.xxx) type of file you're loading into the 595 GPS? What is the original source of this file (Mapsource? Third Party? One of your previous saved tracks?)

OK, I see this reply. You're having difficulty with a "drawn" track, so I'm assuming that you used BaseCamp to manually draw a route within BaseCamp, and then you loaded that route to the GPS, and now giving you problems following that manually drawn route.

Do I have this right? Is the problem with any other uploaded track (like, a previous track that you've downloaded to BaseCamp, and then re-uploaded to the GPS)? Or, is it just the manually drawn route that is the problem?

Edit: Note that I'm using "route" type wording. This is different from "track", and from "trip".

I've asked some questions in other replies, but I'll attempt to answer your questions now.

If you manually "drew a track" in BaseCamp, then it is not a track file. It's a "route". It makes a difference to the SW system, and to the GPS.

In General: A track is an output file type from a GPS and may have thousands of "breadcrumbs" (data points) written to it by the GPS machine. The BaseCamp SW does not perform a conversion during importing this tack file into BaseCamp. It remains whatever "dot" type it started as.

A route is an output file type from a SW system (BaseCamp), and generally have much fewer "breadcrumb" data points written to it by the app. It's usually a different "dot" file type (which is why I asked what you're uploading to the GPS).

A route can be an output from SW by a user "drawing a track". It can also be a conversion of a GPS track, by the SW app., into a route file and subsequently uploaded to the GPS in a different format (a "route", not a "track").

During the conversion process (of either the manually "drawn" route, or the converted track-to-route), the SW app (Basecamp) makes an approximation of your intended route and "fills in the blanks" with the number of data points you specify (250 per, 500 per, 1000 per, etc)

It may be this conversion process that is giving you the problems. You may be specifying more datapoints than the 595 can handle, during the "manually drawing" process.

I guess I would look there first.

No, you should not need to convert to a "trip", if that was not apparent to you.

Hmm...
When I create a route/trip/track, call it what you like, but use BC standard settings.
BC automatically save the createt trip on the left side of screen in BC.
When finish, I just mark the newly createt trip, and choise "send to unit" (assuming you already have connected the 595.
Then when you start the 595, procedure as my first reply.

Agreed, it should be that simple.

The OP indicates his unit is not doing that, so I assume there's something wrong with either his GPS, or his SW, or his methods.

OP, if you're still having problems, here's my .02:

Power the GPS, and erase everything. Routes, Favorites, Track Logs, anything that can be erased. Then, turn it off, and remove the battery. Wait 30 seconds, and re-insert the battery. Do not turn it on yet. (ie: this cleans and resets the GPS).

Now, over to Basecamp. Create a simple trip. If possible, start it from your front door, or somewhere close. End it at a reasonably close location, maybe only 10 minute walking distance (so, you can walk the trip, to test it).

Turn on the GPS. Allow it to boot. Attach the GPS to the Basecamp device, and upload your newly created trip after the BC device recognizes the newly attached device.

When finished with the upload, then Close Basecamp. Now eject the GPS from the Basecamp device. (Use the OS to perform the eject the GPS from the Basecamp device OS, or just "pull the cord". You choose, but remember which way you did). Now turn off the GPS.

At this point, you should have the trip stored in the GPS memory, but not yet Imported into the GPS route / track management embedded system support SW (if that makes sense to you).

Turn on the GPS, allow it to boot. At this point, you should see a request to Import a new (route / track / trip, something).

If you don't see this request, then I believe the GPS is faulty somehow. If you do see it, push the "yes" prompt. The GPS should then begin the conversion process I mentioned earlier. The GPS embedded system should "map" the requested (route / track / trip) data points to the loaded map files. When finished, there should be a trip or route selection available for you to select. There should be only one, the one you just uploaded (which is why we cleaned out everything previous to this).

If it's not there, there may be a problem with the memory card (if you have one installed), or the uploaded map images (the reference map: City, Topo, whatever), or the uploaded trip file (from Basecamp), or some other hardware problem.

You could try a new battery, or a different (new?) memory card. If there's no external memory card, then it's possible that the GPS internal memory was full from the previous tracks / files.

If you do see the created trip imposed over the displayed map, then go walk it. Does the GPS now provide the expected navigation? If yes, you're done.

If no, then report back, and I'll try to give you a "what next" when you tell me what happened. If possible, please try to use the above described process flow. If you deviate from it, try to remember where you changed it, and maybe why?

Hope this helps, good luck.

Yes, I am in town in my truck or my bike just trying to figure this new toy out.......I drew a track to work and wanted to follow it. Cant do it like I could with my 60CSX........I saw a few vidz about making the tracks a trip. Is that the only way to follow tracks?

I'm very glad you're feeling better. I'm nursing a broke right tib, right now, too. I figure 'nother month at least cause today I got reset.

I'm two weeks into crutches, and today it feels "crunchy" again after a busy day of driving a truck down a dirt road. Dammit!

OK guys...good weekend. Did use my 595 (in truck) this weekend, so I am making some progress. I did a color change, with the help off a friend.

So kinda starting over here, how do I keep the 595 screen from having pop ups and zooming out? While in use the right side (in a split screen mode) would display a diff view, like a maps of the interstate, exit ramp.....crap like that. Also it would zoom out and back in at random......annoying.

Anyway to turn the "feature" off?

Yes, I am pretty sure that you can turn the "zoom" off, But if you do, it will not zoom in when you get to turns and other thing, where you want to have a god overview.
The pop up...On mine I have not yet figured out how to totaly turn them off, but you can minimize the message.

Don't remember axactly where, (either of these thing) but if you play around with the GPS, you will find it (not near my GPS at the moment)
