Apologize if this has been posted many, many times - but I am going cross-eyed searching and reading..... ::002::

I have pretty much decided to go with Touratech Zega Pros in black. I think these will look great on my 2015 Candy Red S10. I will go with the black racks also I think.

Do you guys think a 31 & 38L pannier setup is large enough if I have a 38L top case as well?

Right now I use my S10 mostly for commuting and day trips but would like to have a system which will last me the life of the bike and not leave me wanting for more.

Thanks

the black zega pros will look great on the bike... but go with the stainless mounting racks as they will not mar and show wear like the black finish racks... when I talked to the guy at toura tech he made this suggestion and he was correct... I use my panniers all the time and at times I have to remove them to store bike when I'm away... the black racks would be just as strong as the stainless finish but the black would have rubbed off along time ago... with stainless I can clean them up easily when I want to and they look great....besides with the boxes on you cant see much of the racks anyway.... as for size , I went with the larger capacity, makes for a big ass but will carry everything I need internally... size is dependent on your need.... my top box rarely comes off as I carry a lot of essentials there( toilet paper , gloves , maps , etc. ) you get the drift... carry lunch box things for work, in one pannier , put my jacket and other gear in the other... no place at work to leave them....

Good advice on the stainless racks I wondered about the black finish durability. Thanks for the response.

I am looking at panniers and going cross eyed as well, I like the look of the touratech zega pros but damn they are pricey. I saw the givi outback trekkers in black and a pair of black 37L panniers and rack comes in at just under a grand, I haven't heard any negatives on them in searching online and they look pretty good, might be worth checking out? I'm thinking givi might be the way to go for me.

My son has been running a set of Caribou cases on his 2003 VStrom for years and below is a similar set on Dirt Dad's red Tenere os you can visualize them. They're tough as nails and have been crash tested on more than one occasion. They also can be found new or used for less money than Touratech charges.

Absolutely. And they've been around for so many years you might find used ones cheap.

Got on Caribou website and did some reading. Stuff loooks like a good system.

I never thought choosing panniers would be so dificult for me. But I see from looking around the forum I am not alone there...

Too many choices maybe.

Hey X, I would love to see a couple pictures of your new side cases if you have them mounted? Overall are you pretty happy with the build quality and aesthetics of the Givi's? Also, did you have any problems with the international shipping from Italy?

Thanks

Curtis

There were not a lot of choices when our bikes first got here in 2011...I wound up with Muffintop aka Wendell Cases on SW-Motech QR racks. Since Wendell is no longer making cases, I've been looking around, and if I were to replace them, I'd be looking at the Bumots. Also, go at least one size larger than you think you need, extra capacity never hurts...

My used bike came with Touratech racks. Thinking about getting the 31/36L combo and a water proof top bag. Is there anyone her who regrets getting the smaller 31/36 over the 36/45? My thinking is that it would force me to pack less, although I don't want to run out of capacity at the same time.

I have Zega Pros, and while they are fine luggage, if I didn't get the setup used for $700 I'd never have considered them. There are many other options that are essentially the same thing (there's only so many ways to make a square aluminum box) for a ton less money. My choice would be the ones I've linked below. I've seen them in person, and if I had this setup instead of the Zegas I'd be perfectly happy with them.

http://www.brooksautosports.com/Yamaha-super-tenere?product_id=82

Note that the rack pic is a stock pic, and not a pic of the Tenere rack. The cases are solid, the latches are solid, and the racks are solid. When I looked at them, I'll tell you that if they were $1000 for the set I'd still thing they were about the best deal going. For a little more than that, also check out the Bumot setup ad advmotorrad.

Plus, if you go another way, you get the added bonus of not having to deal with Touratech's not-that-great customer service. To wit, they once charged me $15 to ship 4 screws, and did me the favor of including their 5 pound catalog in the box when a simple envelope and a stamp would have sufficed.

Now, all of that said, I do want to re-iterate that if you're set on the Zegas, they are very nice, super sturdy, and in general, I have nothing but good things to say about them. I just think $2000 for a couple of boxes is absurd.

Depends how much you carry.

I have used panniers from a combined 65L which are regarded as small and up to 82L which are regarded as large (48 / 37 combo)

In my experience assuming you are not carrying camping kit and are a typical male you will get all you need for a week into a 30L pannier, so the 31 / 38 combo should be plenty large enough for stowing all you need including spare gloves / visors / waterproofs etc and still leave the top box free to secure your lid and sat-nav when you want to go for a stroll.

Prior to the Mrs having her own bike we struggled with smaller panniers, she would want to put lots of stuff into the top box as well, with a pair of larger boxes we did much better, she has been OK with 45L and 48L boxes and I can easily manage a fortnight with 37L, now she has her own bike with top box it is a breeze.

So in summary - anything will do for a single fella and last you a lifetime, if you plan on two-up go as large as you can ::008::
