I just finished reading the shootout in the new Motorcyclist between the KTM, GS, Explorer and the S10. It is apparent from the article that the S10 (that won the off-road shootout last year) is really not good for off-road riding. It now falls in line with the Explorer as an off-road pouser. I have seen unlimited photo evidence on this very forum showing these street machines going through mud, over rocks, down single tracks and worse. It's time you wised up and rode this bike as it was designed to be ridden. If you would like to go off-road trade it in on a dirt worthy bike such as the GS or KTM.

I are kinda stupid sometimes. I have no excuses with the Tenere, I has been an idiot...twice. Once in blue, once in black.

If I were a bit smarter maybe I would have taken the money for both bikes and bought myself a good bike like a BMW or KTM. Might even have had enough money left over to buy a good insurance policy with towing, and if lucky, even have had enough money to pay for renting a bike while my good bike was getting repaired. I feel so dumb now.

I'm an idiot... I know it. I know it because I bought a Super Tenere...

You see, since I bought a Super Tenere I'm out there riding all the time, using up tons of precious fossil fuels in the form of gasoline, oil, and tires. I'm out on the road, away from town, all I want, and because of that I miss a lot of things...

What have I been missing?

Well, if I had bought a BMW or a KTM instead of riding and piling up the miles on a bike, I could be doing things like sitting in Starbucks talking with other BMW and KTM owners about how cool my bikes is, what great resale it has because it has so few miles, and how all the magazines just think it's *TITZ*! I wouldn't be sweating, or freezing, or wet out there on the road... And I wouldn't be getting dirty, either. Nope, I'd be sitting in that Starbucks in temperature controlled comfort, with no worries of getting any bugs on my mega-bucks BMW or KTM signature riding gear made from whale foreskin, and sipping a Diet Mocha Peach Fuzzy Latte...

If I got the BMW or KTM I'd get to meet some new and different people, too... Tow truck drivers, service managers, motorcycle technicians, and have more frequent trips to the bank to withdraw funds or speak with loan officers to finance repairs. I'd also get to talk to other cool people on the phone... Like roadside assistance operators, folks answering the customer service line, warranty supervisors, and parts counter people who tell me "it's still on backorder."

And I wouldn't be burning up all those fossil fuel products, so I could feel good about being *green*...

Best of all, I'd have a lot more time to read magazines that told me my bike was the best out there, even when it was in the shop! ;)

Yep, I'm an idiot... Out there riding so much on that friggin' stone reliable Super Tenere. ::025::

Best line of the day.

I don't know if you keep up with sport touring bikes but the new sweetheart of the magazines, the BMW RT, is snapping rear shocks and have been recalled. It could be a couple of months before they have new shocks. BMW is stepping up though and will give you your money back or loan you a BMW to ride until the shocks come in.

I'm still trying to "getwell" but 8 weeks after back surgery I'm still Tenereless. Now that I have been enlightened by the good folks at Motorcyclist I may have to go to the BMW store. As much as I would like to spend more time off-road I probably only spent about 10% of my time in the dirt.

Here is my letter to Motorcyclist:

Regarding your Down and Dirty off-road test of four big ADV bikes in the August issue:

While most readers know that your staff is ever-bedazzled by the latest suite of techno-gadgetry and ever-increasing horsepower numbers on new motorcycles, those of us who live in the real world where we actually pay for our motorcycles, tires, repairs, and dented rims, and we actually use our ADV bikes regularly in the back country, well, we have other priorities. Durability, toughness, and reliability come readily to mind as the actual currency that is valued in ADV riding.

Your testers damaged two front rims, as well as jumped the bikes, slid them around corners, and laid them on their sides as handy seats during break time. No one who personally pays for such a motorcycle would ride it or treat it like that. And no one who wants to come home unscathed from a day or week-long trip in the back country would ride these bikes like you did.

Unsurprisingly, the Super Tenere landed in the back of the pack in your Down and Dirty off-road test. I ride my Super T on as much dirt as I can find, solo, and besides never being stranded due to mechanical issues, I have never abused the bike like that. It has a real skid plate (Rumbux)and an ABS off switch that cost me $15 off Ebay, and other accessories that make it extremely capable in the dirt, not the low slung pig that you made it out to be.

The Super Tenere is fast joining the ranks of motorcycles that have a loyal following of riders who recognize its toughness and durability, though it never seems to fare well on comparison tests. These are bikes like the KLR 650 and the DRz 400; popular, reliable, and with a deep aftermarket, able and ready to solve any farkling challenge. I’ll take that any day over the two winners that, if the internet holds any truth at all, might not get me home.

Outstanding, Mr. Richards!!! ::012::

My hat's off to you, Sir! You very eloquently summed up just what no magazine grunt never seems to understand. After all, how many of them have you ever actually seen *BUY* those BMW's and KTM's they are always so smitten over?

I appreciate you writing the letter and speaking so well for me, and I'm sure others feel exactly the same!

Thanks! ::008::

LOL, I ordered one having only seen grainy pictures of one. Took delivery without having ridden one. What kind of idiot does that I ask. ::010::

Ya' know, Don... That reminded me of an interesting point.

I've been riding since 1970, and I've owned so many motorcycles over the years I've lost count of how many there have been. Suffice to say, it's been a *LOT*, easily over a hundred. Yet in all those years, I have test ridden exactly *TWO* motorcycles before I bought them. One was used, the other new.

So I guess I've been an idiot a whole bunch of times! ::025::

But I sure have had fun... And I ordered my Super Tenere nearly a year before I got it, but have loved every minute I've owned it. ::001::

p.s. - as an aside, I had to wait almost exactly two years before my Ducati D16RR Desmosedici got here... and I didn't ride it before I bought it, either. ::025::
