October........

FZ-07 in Tenere/Adventure trim.

Spent most of the day with the dealer rep at a ride demo and, well, he never said a thing....or did he?

I'm in the second they release us a baby Tenere.

Oh, and I rode the FZ-07. Damn, that is a fun bike!!!! I have already ridden the FZ-09. Quite frankly, you can't really compare the two bikes. They do things very differently. My wife rode both as she is ready to start riding again now that our daughter is going to be 4 this October. She liked both a lot but said she wants the FZ-09. Looks like I need to work a few more hours of overtime and get her what she wants. May just end up buying an 07 Tenere and an 09 at the same time when the Tenere shows up.

It's gonna be a fun fall and winter of farkling! I can already see it. ::013::

The only thing with the 07 is that it's a very low quality bike - is course it's rock bottom price too. Barely £5000 of my hard earned British pounds. Nice smooth engine though. I can see it would be a good engine in a baby adventure bike.

The 09 is a lot of fun though eh? I liked it a lot. I could have one of those to go alongside the s10.

Phil, sounds like you guys have some fun times coming up! If I was still working DC (funnily enough, I'm here now, just for a week - then back to the S10 which I left in the UK) I would have an FZ09 by now. But I'd really like one in adventure trim... the FZ07 motor doesn't excite me nearly as much. Still, the FZ07-based baby Tenere should be excellent. The only sad thing is that if they use that motor for it there is no chance they will come out with a version based on the triple.

It would be great if Yamaha would bring this new Tenere to our Rally in Oct. Then we could all get a good look at it. Test rides would be great too.

Same 689cc displacement? I figured they'd up it to around 800cc to do battle with the Triumph/BMW models. Or maybe they want their own niche....it'll be interesting.

Did your rep say anything about the FJ-09? :question:

I have a 2005 V-Strom which I use for commuting and it is fantastic, about 60mpg (Proper Gallons that is) does well over 250 miles to a tank of fuel, has decent pull through the rev range and more than adequate handling for most of the people most of the time

If Yamaha can build a bike that is:-

* No Heavier than the V-Strom
* As good on fuel consumption
* Easy 200 miles to the tank
* A shade more power
* A bit more torque
* Fair off-road abilities (somewhere between the V-Strom and 660 Tenere)

I could see it being a really good seller and taking sales from V-Stroms, Versys and maybe a few BMW sales, although the 800GS are (allegedly) high quality machines. I think it would be better if they could maybe bore it out to a 750 to give it a good increase in grunt it would have even wider appeal.

If it is as competitively priced as the FZ (or MT as it is called over here) I would consider one myself when the Strom wears out.

If it was pokey enough the Mrs may even consider "trading down" from her TDM900

Rasher, did you just use BMW and high quality in the same sentence? Now that right there is funny!!!! ::015::

This is exciting. I've written Yamaha a couple of times voting for the Tenere 660. This would be even better, though.

Interesting factoid: the FZ-07's parallel twin has the same 270 degree firing order as the Super Tenere. With a heavier flywheel & tuning for torque, it would probably have similar engine characteristics as the ST.

I hope they don't sacrifice power too much on that quest for "torque". In the FZ-07 trim it's only good for ~70hp, but already making 40 lb-ft of torque.

I hope they just concentrate on "light and simple". The FZ-07 is <400lbs wet. That would be a nice, although unrealistic, target.

I also hope they don't try to make it $8k and give it a bunch of garbage for brakes, suspension, etc.

Yup!! I told the rep the same thing!! Don't put lipstick on it. It will still be a pig if they do that. Please, Yamaha, pay attention!!! We will pay more for the parts that really make a functional bike. I will pass if it is appointed as the FZ-07 is. I need the set up of the Super Tenere or better to get my money.

They have a nice entry level bike in the XT250 so yeah, I hope this is a real lightweight adv/dual sport gem. I've been looking at a KTM 500exc but I'm worried that 500, although a beast in the dirt, would be a wheez bag on the highway. From all I've read, that FZ-07 motor runs really well. Lotsa potential there...

I can guarantee those 2 bikes won't be in the same "league". That KTM is a plated dirt bike essentially. Anything built around the FZ-07 mill will be a big trailie at "best". Think Versys, Vstrom, MAYBE if we are lucky KLR/KTM 690.

Personally, I find the 660 dated. For you guys in the US market, it hits me as a redesigned contemporary of the KLR in being not terribly powerful and heavy, but having nice new bodywork and instruments. Plus, a lot of people like twins more than thumpers. Those that want a big thumper these days seem to like the Euro offerings, like the KTM 690. (Keeps Taking Money)

An ADV Fuzzy 7 would up Yamaha's game from the big thumper to twin to market against the Honda 700, Versys and Little Strom. Plus, the common criticism of those bikes is that they are not really adventure bikes. Hopefully, this is what Yamaha will hear and respond to.

I have a friend with one. He says it will hit 180 kph on the highway no problem. My concern would be the frequency of maintenance if you rack up a lot of miles doing slab. If you don't mind that, the 500 EXC is an awesome machine and I seriously doubt Yamaha will come up with anything remotely like that.

That's like what, 112mph! I had no idea. And yeah, on any trip I was taking a 500exc, slabbing would be minimized if not avoided altogether. As long as it's capable of a 15~20 mile squirt along a freeway to the next dirt trail, that's all I'd need. It's the thing to augment the Tenere, to take places the Tenere just can't go (at least not with me at the controls) like single track, etc.

Still, an XT700Z at 425lbs with great suspension and features would be a very interesting bike.

Looks like with the offroad gearing it's 150 kph plus, not 180. Still, it's an amazing bike offroad as well as on, as you can see in these vids.
