Hey all! Dan from NC here. I've been following along here and on ADV Rider for a while now. I got my first chance to ride an S10 yesterday, and am quite taken by it. The dealer had a blue demo bike with 100 miles on it that I was able to ride, and also has a newly un-crated white one. We didn't get into the price on the white one, but he wants 14k otd for the demo. After researching the last 6 months, I'm thinking that he's asking way too much. It seems as though Romney Cycles in WV has about the best price. I can get a train to D.C. for $60 and have no issue with the 7 hour ride back home. I guess what I'd like to hear from the experts is what would you try to talk them down to when he makes his follow up call later this week? Also, for those of you who have flown in to purchase at Romney, how did you get there from the D.C. area? I've enjoyed following along these past months, and hope to join your ranks in the near future.

Welcome to the forum!!!

As far as the price 14g is way high I bought mine the first of Jan for 11,500 I found this price at 2 different dealers. If you are buying the demo it should be a lot cheaper than the one in the box. Your dealer is charging you for a new bike not a demo. Where ever you go to buy one, just buy one you will not be disappointed.

14k is too much. I know a guy if you are looking into road trip buying... Mike at Port ( Washington) Yamaha in Wisconsin.

Welcome on, IC Dan ..... it's a bit nippy here as well. ::012:: Sounds like you're ready to make the plunge. I can't help you with the price thing .... everything up here costs more than it should, and we're stuck with it. If it's a really good dealership, then a little extra cost will balance out. Let us know when your mounted up, and send some pics. ::004:: to the Forum. R. ::022::

Thanks for the welcome. I'm willing to take my time and shop around for the best price but the tough part will be that I've already ordered some farkles that I'll just have to cover up with shop towels in the garage so I don't have to look at them as I pass! So no one has flown in to buy at Romney?

Hey Benoit368, will you PM me with a few of those dealer names you were mentioning?

Autoteach, if it wasn't February I wouldn't be opposed to Wisconsin....

Thanks all!

Yea, keep shopping. 14 OTD is fair for a new one, but they can be had for much cheaper here in the states. Mine was 13.7 otd in Florida a year ago and that was about average at the time. It looks like prices have been dropping a bit lately. There are lots of fully farkled ones for sale that are great deals. Don't be scared to fly, buy, ride.

This time of year it depends on how far you want to ride it home and perhaps making the dealer aware that you really are willing to go somewhere distant to get a better price. There is a blue '12 on the floor at B&B Cycles in Victorville, CA that's 12,385 otd w/o any accessories. They show it with bags and have an $11,500 price on it, but that's not OTD, or with the bags. They have been calling me about once a month to see if I'm still interested. (was looking for a S10 for my wife, but she's not ready yet). That's about the lowest price I've seen.

I've had pretty good luck getting dealers to come down if I laid out the other deal and my real costs to go get it and ride it home. If he won't come down to Romney's price for an equal demo bike, push him to throw in the four year YES extended Warranty. Retail on that is as much as $900 from some dealers, but you can get it for $400 or less and don't have to buy it right away, just within the first year of the existing warranty. Which brings up the point, is the demo plated? If so, the oem warranty period may have already started as far as Yamaha is concerned. You may want to verify that issue. Some dealers register demo bikes in their own name or the shop's name, starting the warranty period.

Dan, keep shopping.
Even us canucks were able to get great deals back in late 2011 for pre release tenere's.
we were getting quoted anywhere between $12900-13500 OTD.
I think I saw one in Milwakee for $11500 plus tax recently plus tax.

to put it in perspective canadian ones are $16500 plus tax, so for a US dealer asking $14000, that's steep.

good luck, and good choice.
PS: 95% of guys on the forum, never had the chance to ride the bike before buying it, I think there's very few of us that are not happy with them

Many people have flown to buy, both from Romney and the dealer in Texas. There are better deals out there. The question does come up, as to supporting the local dealer and what is it worth to you? Some are happy with this. Maybe try calling and talking to the owner, unless it is a mega store and the owner is in Tahiti.

I hear ya HoebSTer. I'd really like to build a relationship with the local guy. The problem is, he's 2 hours away from me and as much as I'd like to keep my business local, if I can save 2k then I have to go that route. If it was say, $500, I would consider that money well spent.

Wow, 2hrs is a long ways away. Are there none closer? Very interesting. You will be able to get your good deal if you are able to travel some, and make it an adventure on the way home.

There are actually 2 closer, both about an hour away, but none of them stock the bike and both want msrp on a new one that I'd have to pay for ahead of time...

The good news is...I put a deposit down last night on a left over blue one that has 0 miles. I got the 4 year YES plan and even factoring in the 3% NC tax and $400 round trip cost to get the bike, I'm OTD for just under 13k! Score! I leave to pick it up on Friday the 22nd. It's a 9 hour drive from my house but no biggie. This was easily the the nicest dealer I've ever delt with.

I got it from Miller's Yamaha in Lamont Furnace, PA. I dealt directly with Ernie Miller who is the general manager. Great guy and the whole transacton couldn't have been any easier. I'm so excited! I will post pics once I have it.

I bought mine for 14.5 otd - hindsight's 20/20 but wish i would have negotiated in the 4 year YES at that price and maybe the taller windshield. Seems as if lately they're able to be had for about a grand OTD cheaper. oh well at least i got the only black one on the floor...
