I know I cna find this out from a dealer, but it's 5am here and I'm curious now! :)

can I go to my local dealer and buy YES coverage on my 27k miles '12 S10? I have a feeling it isn't worth it, as the bikes are mostly stone-axe reliable, but I'm just curious. Thanks.

The Yamaha extended warranty, (YES), must be purchased within the original 12 month factory warranty period. So, no, you may not purchase that at this time.

However, there are aftermarket warranties from various companies like Zurich that can be purchased when the bike is used. These vary in coverage and cost. A typical contract would give you a warranty value equal to the value of the bike at the time you purchased the warranty, and would have a value for each incident that was a maximum of what the value of the bike was, at the time of the incident. We have one of these on my wife's BMW. (It more than paid for itself, purchased when the bike was new for ~$1500).

Hope that helps. Might be worth poking the web to see what costs were for your bike to see if it offered any value for you in your specific situation.

Yep, this is my plan for the "used" '15 I just picked up. I have about 3 months of the factory warranty left, so will pull the trigger in about 6 weeks.

One thing to check is when the bike may have originally been registered. I've heard of a few cases where the dealer actually registered the bike a few months/weeks before selling it. When the buyer waited until the last month to renew he discovered the 12 mo. warranty had already expired. Heard the story from Adam K. over on ST-Riders.net, he would have more detail. In the example I'm relating I think the dealer made it good. Not sure one would get the same consideration as a second owner.

Hmmm, that's interesting. Did he get the warranty through D & H - same as the bike?

Adam did as did I. Where the bike was or where the dealer is that was the subject of the warranty story, I don't know.

You might go down and have your vin# run through the system, the op may have gotten the 4yr extension at purchase, it's transferable. If so, then you're good for another few months in which you can extend the coverage. If not, aftermarket.
