Hey guys,

I spent about a week researching oil for my S10 and knowing the oil threads are like religion or politics, I picked a Castrol Actevo X-TRA Semi-Synthetic 4T Engine Oil 10W40 for my engine and Bel-Ray Gear Saver Hypoid Gear Oil 80W90.

Will this oil be ok to use? I read a few people use this and then after I ordered it I stumbled across a couple threads saying to not use any oil better than the conventional oil recommended. I feel like a Jack Russell puppy chasing its tail and I guess id like to know are these oils OK, or should I just get the recommended Yamalube?

I've been using the same Castrol oil for the last 15,000 miles. I'm happy with it and will continue using it. I change both the oil and gear oil every 5,000 miles since the rear only holds a few ounces. Its cheap insurance and super easy.

Slippery and clean works well. ;D Non-energy conserving or moto specific oils are best. Meeting or exceeding JASO MA specs is what you're looking for and you've got that. ::008::

Don't stress about this too much. I've had oil tested by labs at various mileage and though you will find it dirty, it doesn't "break down" in normal use over a mere 4-6k miles. The US bikes have a Yamaha recommended 4k interval for changes, but the rest of the world has a 6200 mile interval. This is simply because humans like round numbers. (6200 miles is 10k kms). The best thing you can do to keep your bike running great is just change the oil every 4-6k miles, use some fuel additive like Ring Free/Engine RX or SeaFoam on a regular basis to keep carbon deposits down and ride it.

Thank you guys. That's what I needed. I'll make sure I change the fluids and I bought 1L of gear oil so I'll be sure to change that too with the oil!

Thank you again!

Is that a Castrol motorcycle oil, because there is a difference between car & and bike oil.

It is motorcycle specific. Bought a bulk pack of this myself. Just about 1k miles on my first change, but so far so good. As previously stated, meets or exceeds bike specs.

Cool. Confirmed with my tech today that the big difference in the oil is the "anti-shear agents" added to it. Because the engine oil is also our transmission fluid these additives are needed. Back in my younger/no money days, I used Castrol 20w-50 in my FJ. It would wear out in 2000-2200mi. Yamalube would wear out in about 4k miles. I could tell it was worn out because it shifted different. I would miss shifts. Changed it twice as often for half the price. All the same in the long run, but it was cheaper when I needed it.
