I just finished the oem heated grip install and my throttle seems to have excessive play, tried adjusting it and it just feels weird , i've pulled apart the housing 2x and everything looks ok ( I think) anyone else had this issue ?

Got it handled , went to my dealership and they were also puzzled , they gave yamaha a call and the guy who answered happened to do 14 installs of oem heated grips for some demos , turns out I had the heat wire coiled incorrectly , yamaha dude did same on first to installs before becoming a master on the following 12 , the tech at my dealer fiddled with it and eventually fixed it for me free of charge even though I did the install , Mark is great , thanks man !

Hey Yamamama, please take a hint on your next heated grip design!

So after 8 months with Fall on the way I had my local dealer install the Yamaha heated grips. They seem to heat up properly, and the throttle opens and closes without any abruptness....BUT it seems signifigantly stiffer to twist the throttle What gives? Did they not lubricate it enough? Has anyone else experienced this and do you have any advice? Much thanks, I'm perplexed. It's really bumming me out because I just got new Conti Trail Attack 2 tires installed which are fantastic and I can't enjoy them because of the stupid stiff throttle thing. What's the deal?

Howdy,
Bring it back, they did not do it right. It should be exactly the same action you had before the grips were installed. Mine are the same as without.
Later,
Norm

The downside of the Honda design is each time you turn the bike off the heat setting is cancelled.

I felt the same as you after my heated grips were installed. When I started using a new YSP dealer I had the head mechanic double check it and he said the previous shop had done it correctly. I still might ask him to add more lube to the cables though next time I'm there.

Let us know how they resolve it for you.

I have these on the way (from Ebay) and will probably have my dealer install them when I take the bike in for the 600 mile service (very soon). Did you ever resolve the stiff throttle problem? If so, what was the cause?

Thanks.

I just got the OEM grips and have the instructions. Have been checking this thread for tips 'n tricks for install 'cause the instructions consist of an exploded parts diagram...I would have preferred a few written instructions, but will make do with what's there. There are 7 pages of instructions - that's a pretty big pdf file to upload!!

I scanned the "Grip Heater XT1200Z Mounting Instructions" to PDF but the file size was too big to post. Tried reducing resolution but once file size was small enough, the diagrams weren't readable. Will work on a better solution.
Any suggestions?

4n6guy, the pictures are in great detail as to where the cables are routed, the mark on the handlebar to drill your new hole on right side, and how the brackets are layer out for your left side mirror relocation. Have some patience as it is 2hr plus job if you go slowly. Follow the dotted lines in the pics where the wire leads from each grip go along with each side handlebar switch harness. You will access the four lead spare terminal connector for power on RS front tucked near the tool kit. There is a 3 and 4 wire white plug in there. On this forum, there are pics to show you were these plugs are located.

Thanks for the advice, HoebSTer! Always willing to learn from others' experiences.
As for uploading the instructions to this site, the PDF files are too large. I've sent them by e-mail.

OEM heated grips installed today. It took longer than expected but I hadn't considered the time to remove the LHS Altrider crash bar to get the side panel off ...just to get the fuel tank undone ! Wish I had read through the entire (15 pages) thread before starting because as someone else posted I think I could have routed the wires without lifting the fuel tank. Live 'n learn, right? Anyway, I installed the controller as indicated in the instructions, but I like how some have inverted the bracket for a lower profile. I'll give it a try "as is" first to see if I like it then maybe change it later. A couple things that worked well: hairspray for the LHS grip instead of glue; and molybdenum grease for the power wire on the throttle side.

Now I can't wait for the riding season to start!!

It is possible to just remove the rear 3 bolts from the left side panel and then pry it out get that tank bolt out. Best option is to replace it with a 6 mm bolt with 10 mm hex head and then you can use a 10 mm ratcheting box end wrench to remove and replace that bolt. I have had my tank up many times in the over 30,000 miles I have on my Tenere and the left side panel has never been removed.

I have Altriders as well, and if you pull all the hardware for the left side panel, you can move it out a couple of inches, and forward just enough to get to the tank bolt.

Please report back about how the grips work for you. I have them and have an extreme uneven heating problem (left grip lukewarm, right grip scalding hot). I'm waiting for someone with the same problem to come up with a solution for it. Or if that doesn't happen maybe I'll dive into it myself. Can't see there being an easy solution, though, short of ripping them off and starting over.
