Anyone have some better photos of the proper way to tuck the heated grip wire into the (kit supplied) throttle housing? Everything else about the factory grip kit is very well done, but sheesh, that step left me baffled. ???

Re: Yamaha Heated Grip Installation - Throttle Housing Debacle

I don't have photos but I went through exactly what you're going through a couple weeks ago. Another member pointed out that the instructions call out a dab of grease be used on the wire to slide around in the housing. There is no text telling you to apply the grease, just a dumb little line drawing of what looks to be a grease gun with an "M" printed on it.

Re: Yamaha Heated Grip Installation - Throttle Housing Debacle

I had my dealer do mine and they even messed it up the first time. Very tight throttle. Eventually the wire broke. They had to replace it and then greased it properly. No problems since.

Re: Yamaha Heated Grip Installation

Today we installed a pair of PUIG Heated grips into the OEM conectors of a ST 2014. It worked just fine, dash board control operated perfectly.

Juan, I was lurking here until I saw this post, had to join so I could pick yer brain....I bought a Non ES 2014 and had been wondering if it might be possible and YOU DID IT!

Did you simply wire a pair of grips direct to the black and white 2 wire connectors? Any chance one connector provides more amps making it the one to use on the throttle? Did you need to do anything special to get the functionality on the bar switch and LCD display? Is your video up yet? CAN I BUY YOU A BEER???

THANK YOU SIR!!

Right on. On my 2014 ST I have the OEM grips. I measured resistance and both grips are the same.

For the non OEM (in this case the PUIG) both of them measured the same resistance, as the OEM. I cannot recall values.

So as you asked, we just connected one grip to the grey conector and another grip to the black conector.

To avoid cutting or replacing the OEM conectors, we used flat electrical automotive "male" pins, and we sticked them from the rear of the connectors.

As with the OEM, the dashboard registered the grips (using the menu frontal button) and graduated the heat using the up and down button. No need to program or mess around with ECU.

Sorry I can't put up the video yet, we will as soon is ready, but the electrical part is just plug and play.

With the PUIGs we could not use the OEM housing because the grips we used do not have the same wiring harness. I believe only OEM Yamaha grips have the right design to use the housing.

Juan, that is great news ::012::
I wonder if perhaps the 2 connectors are left and right sides. Would you know if the OEM instructions indicate to connect a specific grip/connector such as 'right to black' or does the orientation not matter? It seems if resistance is the same across each grip than the output of the connectors MIGHT be different to compensate for the insulating properties of the throttle tube. Heck, if it's cold on the left side I could just swap connections in that case....VERY NICE
Now if we can source the other half of that connector....THIS IS HUGE!

Juan, one more question. Did you have this success on a your bike that was already fitted with heated grips or on a bike that had not previously had the OEM heated grips?

Re: Yamaha Heated Grip Installation

Hola Gaps, OEM grips come also with two color coded, but I did not see any indication of a maching colors when installing so I did it really checked that. I do, however, believe the two grips are the same. I do not see how the throttle tube could affect the working of the grips.

The bike we installed the puig grips was "Virgin", and did not have any grips installed. The electronic system detected the grips at once.

The instructions indicate left is Black. Right is Gray.

spam16v, did you find the 2 wire connectors that fit the 2014-2015 grips or the connector for the earlier bikes?

Juan, I'm at risk of becoming a pain in the ass here but..... Could you check the resistance of the OEM grips?

I'll add a home cooked meal to that beer I owe ya....and she's a great cook.

Re: Yamaha Heated Grip Installation

Ok, so with the non OEM we have not seen any difference between each grip. Indeed, the PUIG control does not match colors or sides. Either way is OK with that set. We did not check for left and right.

It seems to me it does not matter; if it did, the OEM grips might had come with a different plug for each side, not just the color.

Anyway, you can try one grip on one connector or the other and see if there is a difference in the heating,or measure resistivity of the thermal coil, and connect that one to the same plug on the bike, but again, if that is the case, you need to know which OEM side is the one with the most load.

Hi guys, long time on and off road rider, but first time ADV owner. I literally signed up for this forum because of this thread. Froze my hands last week after a 4 hour ride in ~29 degree weather and that's something I'd like to fix asap. So let me pile on. I have Heat Demon pads and obviously want to make them plug and play.

Edit, after fiddling around all afternoon it looks like the heat demon/Tenere do not have the voltage/ohms rating required as they only were mildly warm at full settting. I am guessing however, since I am not buying a millimeter for this one project.

Oh and for those of you who need OEM connectors for this project, they are actually the very same ones for Yamaha turn signals, if you replaced your bulbous OEM items you already have the wires and connectors you'll require. You might have to switch the wire slots as I did since I had a nice new set complete with long wires from my 09 R1.

Here are pre wired connectors that look correct, they come with 3 wires but we only need 2.

I spoke with someone at Oxford today, they told me the Premium Adventure grips are 6 and 7ohms left to right which these connectors should handle as they are wired with 22 gauge....that's just a couple amps each or so, correct?? Voltage divided by Ohms = AMPS I believe..

Oxford offers replacement grips for 20 US dollars each so for around 50 bucks we might have a nice arrangement here.

Sure wish someone could post the OHMs of the OEM grips.

Super10NJ, if you have a Harbor Freight nearby you can get a free multimeter with a coupon that shows up in many magazine ads. It's not a fancy Fluke meter but dang nice for free...worth having...and then you can tell us how many ohms those Heat Demons register... ::013::

I do have a Habor near by and will go get one, thanks!

As for the grips I have gone to "Plan B." This highly classified project will involve stealth bombers, a small paramilitary group, beer and hookers. I can't legally say much more, but will let you know my results.
