I never use that little lever and have thought of sawing some of it off. For me, it is a simple process to engage the end of the sidestand (the tab) with my boot and put it down. Just seems natural to me and my boot hits it without looking or fiddling around.
I do the same thing.. the end of it is in the perfect location...

Also, with some offroading, they tend to just fall off.. LOL

How about Shift on the Fly Traction Control like the GS12. Gear indicater for sure. LED Flashers instead of those left overs from 1970s. Heated Grips, yes. Longer front fender. Adjustable wind shield. No 1-3rd gear restrictions. As a bonus 50lbs less. Otherwise awesome bike! ::001::

I think the little lever on the sidestand is to keep you from shifting when the sidestand is down, a redundant safety feature. I never use it to get the sidestand down...
That bit me the other day. I just went for a 160km ride on some back roads it was late and I was tired. Arrived at my destination, put my kick stand down, it kill the motor however I wasnt in neutral and I could not shift it into neutral now, so I put the stand up, into neutral and then proceed to get off.. ::010:: I didnt fight it much on the way down, I already have 2 prodiscs in my back. I eased it down. Not my proudest moment. Used my best lifting form and picked it up. Any how..

I would like to see a motorcycle with a fibre optical light or very small LED hooked to the signal lights on the top of the windsheild plus or minus. I just hate it when I forget my signal light on. More common at the start of the season. The Tenere isnt bad, but on the KLR my helmet would block the cluster and I wouldnt see the flasher right away.

Not a bad bike when you cant think of much to improve. The only way would be to shrink it to an 800. ::008::

Produce a Sport version.
The current one is so RTW that it is a waste of tough for many of the potential wannabees out there.

Just like the GS is to the GSA. The S10 is almost perfect for me but I can see it in YAMAHA's best interests do a lighter more road biased version.

Paint the engine and swingarm etc with nice clear over silver, it will look like shit in 10 years but reviewers won't pick that up.
Plastic Tank. (20Litres)
Move the rev range up 1500 RPM.
Some Nice feeling switch gear designed by Lexus. (They already work together so why not)

It's too tough for most right now and not many need it. I mean how rough does it get in the Alps really?
Look at how the English press test them, All tarmac, high speed etc.

Do a TV travel series with real ADV types (and one movie star). They can all take turns trying to harden the movie star up. :D

On the current S10?

Tougher fan bracket with Positech fuse and a dash warning about stalled fan.

Lighter would still be appreciated but like DC said, there is already a lot of lightweight stuff on the bike (the reasonable cost stuff not CF)
I assume they would have to make a thinner walled frame, less thick engine components etc. So not too much. Don't want to get into BMW territory here.

Led blinkers. Those standard ones look really "Scooter"
Tougher spokes,
10mm more Suspension travel.
Real bash plate option with new mounting points.
Flatter seat for the Yanks.
Breather tube on the shaft vent (AKA HP2 BMW)
Slightly louder exhaust.
More damping options for the rear shock.
Sideways Air Filler necks on the Wheels (whatever they are called)
Plastic 27L tank would be cool. (with option on the Sport) with integral scuff pads.
Seventh gear. (Lower the rest a bit) [edit] that should be at the bottom of the list. Not really a big deal
Tougher looking, water proof switch gear. [just for impressionable people, I bet the current ones will be just as reliable as most Jap bikes]

That will keep them busy.

But I suspect that they may come out with "exciting new colours" for a while, which is a pity because a few issues addressed at a time doesn't take much but gives the reviewers something to talk about. The stores however are stuck with a sudden depreciated item though.

Since we're pickin' nits, howzabout fixing that stupid little lever we must heel down to engage the sidestand?
Hack saw'd. Got in the way of shifting by not letting my boot rest against the foot peg.

This will sound a bit snotty, but I am not too concerned with the changes for the next few years.

First, I got MINE!
Second, I ain't planning on "upgrading" to the latest model becuse I have this one almost EXACTLY how I want it now.......AND I undertand this thing is expected to hold up over a very long time. (The first 12,000 miles certainly supports this claim. It just keeps getting better, in fact)
And third, I don't care what changes Yamaha makes to the ST, it will be a "niche" bike in the States. They can improve it, but it won't sell well here. I'm just thrilled I have had the good fortune that they brought some over.

Truth is, Yamaha did a fantastic job on this bike right out of the chute. Amazing really. This is the best engineered bike that I have ever had. (1972 - present. been a few I promise)

Now, having said all that, I would like to switch TC settings on the fly. :) (can live with this though)
I would like a rear shock spring that could handle the published maximum cargo weight. (Will NOT live with this. Upgrading)

I agree with you about the bike Snakebitten.

I think Yamaha could sell TONS of S10s if they took pointers from BMW and Harley Davidson marketing. They have the bike, now they need to create the "lifestyle" image, their equivalent of the "GS Challenge", their equivalent to Rawhyde Adventures, their equivalent to "Long Way Round".

Nick Sanders' ride was incredible - how many people know about it? Motoquest Tours has a 240 day RTW trip on BMWs... how much lighter could the support vehicle be if it were a tour using S10s? :D

I believe that if you want change, you need to step up to make it happen....

I'll volunteer - Hey Yamaha!! I'm ready to tackle the Road of Bones, Mongolia, the steppes of Russia, Baja, Alaska, Africa, Australia, India, Middle East. I believe in this bike, and I'm willing to ride it to, through, and home from anywhere with or without pavement. Cover my bills so I can take the time off work, and I'm there.

I agree with the TCS on the fly option and I believe that this is a realistic upgrade that we may see. The new R1 has something like 7 or 8 levels of TCS and you can change them on the fly, so Yamaha knows how to do it. I had a situation while riding a rough gravel road in Arkansas. We all of a sudden came upon a sharp right hand very rough uphill. I had been runing in TCS1 and had a difficult time getting up the hill, as the TC kept coming in. I didn't want to stop in the middle of the hill, so had to keep going the best I could. If I could have switched TCS on the fly, I would have gone to TCS2 or better yet off and I am sure I would have gotten up the hill easier.

Other upgrades that I want I either have already done or will do in the future.

Just thought I would seek out opinions about the SupaTen. What should Yamaha do with the development of the Super Tenere. After the evolution of the r1200gs through the years, what path do we think Yamaha will/should go? I for one think that the bike should lose weight, but how/where?
I think the YST is a great bike . I know people say it doesn't have the electronics that the BMw's have , and I'm fine with that . In fact , I wish it didn't have any electronics at all . As far as I'm concerned electronics are nothing more than dainty computer things that can and will fail . I don't need electronics to ride my bike for me , I can do it all on my own. So if it were up o me , no electronics on the YST's .
Better seats for all day riding . Motorcycle manufactures have come a long way with motorcycles , but have left the seats behind. Put good comfortable seats on bike. ( that goes for all makes and models )
I know the YST comes in at around 575 lbs , but mine doesn't feel that heavy while riding it , in fact it feels very light and agile . Of course , I'm 6'4" tall and around 240 lbs , and my last bike was a Honda Goldwing , so I guess anything would feel light to me :)

If I could change one thing it would be this. Make the front fenders out of Aluminum instead of that plastic crap . And , give the front fenders more clearance between the front tire and fender . And put a better factory skid plate on it to protect the oil filter , I've already dented one oil filter. ( I'll be ordering a full skid plate before spring riding season gets here .
And if they would come factory with a set of Heidenau K60 Scout Dual Sport Tires , that would be GREAT .
Other than that , I love my YST.
