Would like to pair GPS and Sirius / XM with my SMH10. Sorry, I'm overwhelmed

I apologized in advance...but there is so much information. Can I get a few ideas on how to update my setup? (getting rid of my street pilot 3).

I have a SMH10, and want to connect via bluetooth a new (or couple year old used) GPS (no need for off road capabilities), and I'd like to bluetooth as well a Sirius or XM radio.

I DO NOT want to use my iPhone for GPS / Radio.

Which GPS? Which satellite?

Thanks,

I don't know ll of the GPS options but there are only a few Garmin models that offer XM radio so the GPS list is probably a pretty short one. Generally you'll want to stick with the Zumo models for the bike though I started another thread earlier this year about GPS's and people use a wide variety. All of the Garmins with XM will have no problem pairing with the Sena over Bluetooth (as will any of the Zumo models).

I'm thinking the only GPS with XM/Sirus is the Garmin Zumo 600 or something like that (660 maybe), call Garmin and they can explain what they have. The last time I talked to them, they were going more to MP3 format then XM. I have XM and love it, and I use the SENA.

I have mine set up to hear the GPS with directions when routing, hear music, and I can take phone calls. If your listening to music, when your GPS tells you turn at a specific junction, it will silence the music. If you get a phone call, it will silence the music and/or GPS verbal routing, or you can ignore the phone call and keep the music on.

My old Garmin Zumo 550 does XM and can bluetooth to a helmet communicator for phone and GPS prompts only, unfortunately the 550 and I think the other XM capable Zumos will not send XM via blue tooth. For that I use a StarCom1 system with a hard wired cable to the audio out jack. I've heard that you can however purchase a 3rd party bluetooth dongle and plug it into the audio out jack of the Zumo instead of a cable and send the MX (and MP3) music directly to your helmet that way.

My setup has the phone, navigation, XM and MP3 audio all sent through the Starcom1. The phone is BT paired to the Zumo only.

I have a Garmin 665 with the XM antenna paired via bluetooth to my phone and my SMH 10. Works great. XM radio is awesome on long trips. The XM weather radar is pretty incredible and has allowed me to skirt some big storm lines. If I'm riding someone else's bike, my phone pairs directly to the SMH 10. But when the Zumo is in the middle, it can be used to answer or receive calls.

I have the locking Touratech mount, hardwired. The antenna is stuck to the top of the front brake fluid reservoir with heavy duty velcro. I've had it through all sorts of nasty weather, off road getoffs and other abuse without any issues at all. I've been running this for the past five or six years, since before I had my Tenere. It's terrific.

Can you send XM & MP3 via bluetooth from the 665? If so that's an improvement over the 550.

Yes to both. The SMH10 pairs to the Zumo 665 via bluetooth. My phone also pairs to the Zumo via bluetooth. When everything is routed through the Zumo, I use it to change channels, change songs, make calls (it has a contacts list, I think off my phone although I may have put them in there manually at some point) and receive calls (shows caller ID). No wires.

I haven't listened to MP3s for a long time, since I only use the entertainment bit when I'm on a long stretch of highway and like XM. I don't recall if I've played songs from my phone. I may have loaded the music directly onto the Zumo (it has it's own MP3 player and holds a micro SD card).

Are you wanting separate GPS and satellite radio, or one integrated unit?

I was thinking I was going to have to purchase two different units, but the Zumo 665 sounds to be what I am looking for unless there is a different set up for considerably less $$. Looks like the 665 is roughly $500..... And I'm a cheapskate, so I'm going to try to figure out a cheaper solution. If that doesn't exist.... I'll bite the bullet and buy it.

I have a 2015 S10. Does anybody actually mount anything on the OEM accessory bar? Looks too small and slick.

I've got my radar detector mounted there with a ram mount bar clamp. They come with an adapter to fit the 0.5" bar.

It'll be tough to find a cheaper solution. Not sure what TomTom offers.

You can mount on the accessory bar but you get serious vibrations unless you reinforce the whole windshield assembly (there is a thread where a few people have done that). I simply replace one of the bolts on the handlebar clamp with a ram ball mount bolt and use a double female ram mount extender and the GPS sits nicely just below the dash panel (as far as the cockpit view goes) and it's out of the way of my tank bag.
