Does anyone know the estimated MPG for the ST?

Perhaps some of our brothers across the pond could tell us MPL and we can do the math? (let's see, one liter equals 0.264172052 US gallons...so multiply, carry the one, then divide by 12, add birthyear, take away the 9 and you get Imperial gallons, which equals....darn, I should have stayed awake in school).

where did i read the mileage in KM/L Hmm????? 3.78 L = 1 Gallon 100km x .6 = 60miles it was either here earlier, or ADV.

I can tell you that the MTS12 with good gas (chevron with no ethanol) gets about 43mpg if you don't act like a wildman and the Monster 696 gets about 52 mpg but wouldn't want to ride it on a long trip.

The S10 gets between 4.5L/100Km and 6.5L/100Km for most riders OS in normal combined riding.

For the US folks that is .....carry the ....add the weight of a .......take away drag co-efficient of splattered bugs.....
1.188774234 Gallons / 62.5 Smiles = 52.5 smiles / US Gallon.
1.717118338 Gallons / 62.5 Smiles = 36.4 smiles / US Gallon.

I did a quickie, sorta, kinda, eyeball, quasi, estimated review of your math and it's pretty damn close. Good job. That's not bad at all for that size of bike. Not bad at all. I suspect that 6th gear combined with the Tour mode helps a lot on the highway.

to convert L/100 km to MPG
for Canadians where 1 gal=4.5 litres
divide 281 by the L/100 number
for Americans where 1 gal=3.9 litres
divide 244 by the L/100 number
eg 281/4.5 = 62 mpg
244/4.5 = 54 mpg
btw we are paying $1.35 /litre which works out to $5.26 a gallon in US $ in southern Ontario

Wow...riding my little Honda 680 without a 6th gear, I average 50 mpg...which I think is pretty darn good.

Getting between 36 to 52 is right on up there...now, what we have not factored in is any MPG loss due to US standards on clean air, gas additives or other some such limiter which reduces efficiency and output (not that I'm against clean air, mind you....we should do away with all cars and everyone should ride motorcycles).

Overall, I like the numbers we are hearing and they sound "about right" compared to what I see on my FJR. Downside is that it looks like we need to run premium fuel, which is not required for the FJR. So, about a buck more per fill-up, assuming about 5 gallons per.

My ST1300 requires premium fuel, so I have become somewhat accustomed to that, to the extent that one can. For the longest time, premium was only a few cents more than regular. However, since the recent madness regarding oil prices, the big oil companies have maximized their advantage and now P is about 20 cents more than R. Not quite sure how they figure that.


TIP: Up here, it is quite possible to pull into some little podunk spot that does not have premium. Can you say SKAGWAY, ALASKA ???? Carry a small container of Octane Booster with you. It's cheap, and will easily see you through to the next premium fill up. Down there, it may not be a problem. Just a thought, if you're not used to having to use premium. R

Those are some pretty good mileage numbers! The best I ever got with my DL 1000 was 42 mpg and got a low of 32 mpg last summer bucking a 3/4 value, stiff headwind in South Dakota. Not surprisingly, our BMW RT rider got 42 mpg on the same stretch. That RT cuts through the wind like a sharp knife, though.

While the ST1300 recommends premium, it has a knock sensor and runs very well on regular 87. I have had 3 of them since late 2002 and ran 87 in all of them with no problem. I was invited to be a part of the first press intro of the ST1300 in June 2002 and during the tech part of the presentation at the R&D department in Torrance, the engineers told us about the sensor and how it could handle regular. I have tried premium for a few tanks at a time and saw no difference except that my wallet felt lighter.

I have heard that. And I did notice that the owner's manual "recommends" premium, as opposed to it being a requirement. I might give it a try next time. Certainly, one or two tanks of regular shouldn't be a big deal.

I don't think you will have a problem at all - especially since the ST1300 has a knock sensor. I use to own a Honda S2000 and a Mazda MX-5 and they too "recommend" premium. In both cars, I ran regular often and never noted a difference in either performance or mileage.

I will take your advice on that and give it a try. Regular only for a couple tanks.


However, I will not be held responsible for the drop in oil stock value as a result of my curtailed expenditures. I hope big oil will be able to recover. R

Using Regular instead of Premium is OK and does not hurt the engine because the Knock sensor protects the bike.
What is interesting is that often Premium is "cheaper" to run. The difference in price is around 20 cents per gallon. At ~$4 per gallon that is 5% more expensive. BUT, the way a knock sensor works is that it retards the timing for the spark to prevent knock/ping. The effects of retarding the spark are three-fold:
1. the engine runs less efficient and at lower power per volume of gasoline;
2. the engine runs much hotter;
3. the oil gets a little dirtier from blow-by past the rings.

Running on Premium you should get 10~20% better gas mileage (if you use the same amount of power and don't go crazy with acceleration). I have seen this on multiple bikes with knock sensors!

That means that Premium should be at least a 5% savings! YMMV

if you are real easy on the gas and use lot of torch you may get 4.5 or 5l/100km. if not its not going be less then 6L/100km.
They just raised the price of gas here again and now its stands at $10.25 a gallon and I'm about the highjack a fuel tanker :mad:

I never, ever got any better gas mileage when running premium in any of my 3 ST1300's, certainly not 10 or 20%. That would have been an increase of 4.5 to 9 MPG, based on my average of 45 MPG running regular. Ain't gonna happen. Same goes for other friends who have had several ST1300 and tried both premium and regular, including one that is on this forum. How about it, Whisperquiet?

As they say, YMMV, but mine didn't. :)

Funny how different bikes respond.

The best economy I ever got on the Strom was using 91 RON. The smoothest it every ran was with 95RON. The most anemic it ever ran was on 98RON.

Even if I use the same spec fuel the results are different from different manufacturers.

I am now at the point where I just put juice in and go and don't really give a shit. If 95RON is around fine, if its' not fine.

Same here with my '06 ST1300A. No difference in mileage. Maybe slight improvement in performance.
