Thinking of upgrading my Montana to a Zumo 590. I like the Montana but its routing limitations are starting to piss me off.

Who has the 590? Do you like it and where did you mount it?...its really big which is a concern for me as far as mounting and easy access.

Pics would great ;D

I have one with the TPMS addition. No complaints really. Some interesting routing with the "motorcycle roads" option on. Also it makes some strange routing decisions on occasion like heading onto surface streets in downtown Mobile when I really just wanted a fast way east. Nice sightseeing though.

My one big complaint is not the 590 but the newer mapsets. Guess Super 8 didn't pay Garmin enough as new maps don't show Super 8 motels.

I just mounted on my left handlebar where my previous RAM mounted Nuvi went. Lots of cable length.

Oh, if you do Ironbutt rallies and want to zoom out real far and still see your waypoints, keep the Montana. None of the newer Nuvi/Zumo units show waypoints past, I believe, 0.8 mile. The main reason IBA folks still use ancient GPS's like the 476.

It just works well.

Use this to mount the zumo 660 (used to be 550). http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/ram-mounts-mirror-mount-base

Keeps the screen close and easy to read. Easy to make selections. Easy to remove for storage. Inexpensive and simple.
::008:: ::008:: I just bought one of those for the Montana.

I don't plan on running an Iron Butt anytime soon but I have thought about it. I suppose if I get that far in my riding I could run both. Plan on keeping the Montana for off-bike adventures.

I have a 660 mounted on my left handlebar with a clamp-on RAM mount, but this mirror thingy looks nice.

Tim - Which one for the Tenere - 9mm or 11mm? I could look it up myself but I'm being lazy.

Thanks,
Bob

Another option that several of us have found works well is this mount that replaces one of your handlebar clamp bolts. I use it with a short Ram arm to keep my 660 centered. Here are some pics with a previous Nuvi that I used before I got the Zumo. I find that I don't need to keep a constant watch on my GPS, so with it in this location, it is as easy as looking at the speedo and it is within easy reach when I want to use the touch screen.

That looks like a good option as well. I wonder if there is any issue using it with Rox Risers....

Fred, originally I mounted the GPS and iPhone to the same location and they worked well except... I use a Rox riser and the 1" Ball Handlebar Clamp would not stay tight causing the handlebar and everything attached to vibrate. Tried installing different spacers but they did not solve the problem.
When I relocated the GPS and now Xmount to the mirrors I discovered the GPS was easier to read (I have a reading prescription). Also found with the GPS and iPhone out of the way it was easier to get to the ignition key, 12V outlet, and gauges.

***If you have Rox Risers you will need a spacer (washers maybe) to fasten the 1" Ball Handlebar Clamp***

Hope this helps.

Hi Tim,

On my 2012 I had the SW-Motech 1 inch (I believe) block type risers and just had to use the longest bolt and grind a bit off of the built in spacer on the ball mount for a tight fit. I can see how they might be a tricky fit with the pivoting risers. With my 2014's different bar setup, I find I don't need risers, so this mount works well for me and my progressive bifocals. Also, thanks to the 14 having the revised handlebar controls, I can do any switching of displays, damping, preload, cruise, etc without having to reach to the dash, so it is even a better setup on my 14 than it was on my 12.

Thanks

Fred, I use the Rox Riser SKU: 3R-B12PO that is 1 1/4" up and 1" back. These have a bolt mount that is recessed. It needs a spacer or washers to seat the 1" Ball bolts. For some reason mine would not stay tight.

I have the 590 in a Touratech mount. Currently its fitted to the bar above the clocks, however Im not happy with the location. There is a lot of weight there and everything vibrates just a little too much. It also covers the indicator lights on the dash. I have just purchased the SW Motech 28mm bar adaptor and will move everything to the bars in due course.

I pulled the trigger on the 590 with the TPMS/ I hope I didn't make a horrible mistake ??? I fear the learning curve that always seems to come with Garmin products....the quirks the little niggle bugs etc....the endless searching of forums to find the answer to why your unit is acting crazy. I guess I'm just a masochist ::025::

The deal maker was its ability to interact with my phone and play MP3s through bluetooth without the need for a third party Bluetooth device....ie Sena SR10.

Congratulations on the 590. Let us know how simple it is to setup and how well it works.
