Is the KN-204 the correct oil filter?? I've been using them since the first oil change but now I don't see one listed on K&N's website for the S10.

Keep an eye on the area around the top of the filter where the "nut" is welded on. There have been a few batches of their oil filters where the welding process burned through the shell or left it so thin that a leak occurred. Sometimes the leak doesn't happen until many miles after it's been installed.

The issue is normally not with the filter, but rather the installation.
The Nut on the end is for removal only, not for installing the filter.

People use the nut to torque the filter on because it is convenient. This can weaken the can and leaks have happened later because the shell was weakened during installation.

The Nut is for removal not for installation. I am sure others will argue this , but you are wrong.
K&N make a decent filter, but their lack of clarity on the nuts purpose has given the brand a bad name and in fact resulted in them being banned from use in several racing orgs because of it.

This fact was prominent on their website years ago, but for some reason it was made harder to find on the site over time.
I guess they would rather more people buy their filters because they misunderstand the nuts purpose and deal with the fallout from failures. Or more likely they know if buyers realize the nut is only for removal it adds very little value and might choose something different reducing sales.

Either way if you choose a K&N do not use the nut for installing it.

Well K&N issued a recall on this a couple years back, and I’ve heard of it happening again since. It is more than an installation issue as evidenced by the recall. Very few people would be foolish enough to use the nut for installation, it’s universal knowledge to hand-tighten only a spin-on type filter. I’ve not been impressed with K&N quality control frankly.
