Rode over to Dubuque and got a personal tour of the LST-325. It is a WWII Tank Landing Ship. The last one of its breed still in operation. A buddy of mine volunteers on it and goes for about 3 weeks up and down part of the Mississippi.
It served in the Greek Navy for 30+ years before it was brought home. During WWII it would be beached at high tide to drop 20 tanks and other equipment. They dropped the anchor on a cable before going in the pull themselves back out.
Rode some Apple River back roads on the way home. Got to practice some emergency braking for a couple surprised deer.
