A short jaunt of 100+ miles. 36 miles to the Mississippi river levee at Pendelton Bridge. Nice little roundabout below the bridge. Right on the river levee gravel road with continuous views of the river and/ or back water pools at speeds previously unimaginable on the KLR.

68 miles later exit at Arkansas City, Ar. 12 miles to McGehee and the MC barn.

WhooBoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a ride..............

You gotta ride it to appreciate it! Come join me!

First off ballheadknuckle, I'm still giggling from you screen name and .............. been there done that. As far as us experienced dirt riders, I personally wouldn't have attempted that trail without a NOBBY! This bike is too damn heavy for muddy ruts on street tires. My Battlewing streets spin in wet grass so I feel sand and gravel is as far as I will take them, Sounds like you are getting the adventure bug. You can get a nice hybrid and still hit the trails alone. I'm saving up for them myself. Happy off roading dude!
Agreed. Battlewings in mud is just asking for trouble ... but hey, live and learn ...

Today ... 340 mile roundtrip Issaquah WA to Chelan WA and return.

Found an excellent Forest trial off US Route 97 - Durst Creek Rd - http://g.co/maps/aq6mw

No riding today, but did go out and check my spokes. A few needed attention, but nothing serious.

Also figured it was overdue at 24k to check and re-torque the steering head bearings. Umm, yeah, way over due. Pulled the bars off and the rubber plug over the triple tree nut and the nut is loose! Not even finger tight.

Loosened the fork tube pinch bolts and slide the upper triple tree off, lifted off the lock washer and unscrewed the top jam nut, took off the rubber gasket and put the wrench on the lower nut. Hmm, not very tight. Loosened it a quarter turn, then torqued it to the first spec, (38 ft/lbs), backed it off and re-torqued it to the final spec, (13 ft/lbs), re-checked the feel - Ok, re-installed the rubber washer, top nut to finger snug + a little to alight the grooves, lock washer and put the upper triple tree back on, torqued the nut to spec, (94 ft/lbs!), and re-installed the bars, torquing them down, (20 ft/lbs - front first, then rear), and finally the pinch bolts all to spec, (19 ft/lbs). Should be a little nicer on the next ride.

All in all, not a bad job if you have the tools. Helped to get my honey to hold the front wheel while I torqued the nuts. Hmm, that sounds a little naughty... Oh honey... we got some more torquing to do...
:D

Flew to Australia and thanks to a tip from GrahamD, I found the fellas at Garner cycles in Melbourne. Walking distance from the hotel and they had a well broken in S10 waiting.

Gonna spend a few days scouting out west-North-east of the city. Then when the wife finishes her "business" on this business trip, I will spend a few days more taking her to the best roads and places I find. (left side of road is a chore downtown for this Texan!)

So today: The great ocean road. (southwest of Melbourne)

Twitch, i'm pinching myself. Been married for 30 years. I don't take her on my business trips and she doesn't take me on hers. Don't know why she wanted me on this one so bad. But she didn't have to ask twice after she suggested I rent a bike and go adventuring!

Mr Wasp, will do. Port Fairy sounds fine. Didn't go that far today because I was just scouting. But once the misses jumps on board, we have no reason to turn around.

So that ride will rival the "northern ride" up through the Alps? (doesn't matter. I think we have time to do both!)

Hey Epping, I was warned by the fellas at Garners to stay under 10Kph above posted limit even in the countryside. And with the optimistic speedo on this thing, I suspect 10 over isn't really 10 over.

Kilometers, liters, centigrade, driving on left..........It's like being on Mars! LOL

But I have already met many really fine folks. Seems my southern drawl is a dead giveaway for where I am from. :)

Is the sticker of the arrow pointing to the left, your reminder to drive on the wrong side of the road ::025:: I think I would actually be scared that I would screw up and pull out on the wrong side. That has got to be very strange after so many years of driving on the right side of the road.

And here I am stuck in an office in Sydney! I am SO jealous. The Great Ocean Road would be a cracker of a ride!

I hope you have a great time while down under! I'm sure you will.

Cheers

Drove right by Epping this morning heading north out of Melbourne.! (is that where you live EPPING?)

After a few hours heading north, I found myself in a small town called Beechworth. The fun began. The roads started twisting and the scenery became more fantastic. Once I got to Lake Hume, I found myself on the Murray Valley Highway. For hundreds of Kilometers you twist and turn and rise and fall.

I'm toast. 8 hours in the saddle. Stopped in a village called Corryong. Met 2 older gents....one on a Guzzi and the other on a spectacular RGV Suzuki. They showed me to the best steak I have ever had. (in some kind of Pepper sauce\gravy)

Tomorrow morning I am just a few clicks from what is promised to be a spectacular run from Khancoban to Jindabyne on a stretch called "The Alpine Way".

By the way, although I dislike the "lowered feel" of this rental S10, and although the clutch is a bit worn and finding neutral is far more difficult than mine at home, this OZ version sure seems quicker! It flat gets it off the bottom. So are the OZ bikes faster? :)

And yeas coastie, this left side thing is STILL eery after a couple of days in the saddle. I dang near pulled out in front of someone because I looked the wrong way! I could have been flattened. Humiliating.
