Just out of curiosity: what happens when water gets in there?
Both of my TDMs dislike the rain & start running on one piston with the other cutting in & out & sometimes shutting down completely.
I’ve sealed plug connections all over the place but not there…
As the above posts suggest, rust and corrosion, potentially making plug changes and coil removal difficult. Pre fender extender I had signs of rust, nothing serious but definitely there. If you do regular plug changes and checks, it’s unlikely to ever be an issue. I never had any poor running issues though with water ingress.
Since fitting the extender I’ve had no signs whatsoever of water ingress, and I’ve been to Scotland three times since fitting it (among many other places).

You have other water that enters "from above", when you leave the motorcycle parked in the rain, on the side stand.....all the rain (between the tank and the filter box) will run down... and fall on the valve cover, whose design (gutter in the middle, where the coils go)... does not exactly help to drain the water, rather accumulates it, and with the motorcycle tilted to the left, the 2 wells on the left will always be the most affected

My experience doesn’t support this theory. The grit and other debris sitting on the valve cover suggests front wheel spray pre extender was the problem.

Yes... I agree with what you say about the "front" water... mine is not a "theory", I only remember reading a post several years ago from an S10 user who had it parked for a long time, outside, with severe it rains... and when he try to start it can't do it... checking, it found water in the wells... (remembering the post would not be an easy task after so long). but yes, the frontal entry of water, and if the water is salty, it is surely the main problem….

Changed a tire in Iskut BC. Middle of Nowhere on a Saturday afternoon. Very blessed that it was noticed there that some lugs came off. Full story at Adventuresbyguy.com
Took about an hour to be back on the road again. I believe that I was heavily loaded and didn't pump my tires up enough. I know better than that. IMG_1933.jpg

took forks off, as i have leak on the left side that mechanic said don,t waste your money paying me to strip these new seals as i don,t think you,ll get home without it leaking again,
so took the forks off in my garage today there is a company in the UK, that are collecting them tuesday stripping them , hard chroming the lower stantions, rebuilding with seals and oil and sending back, £470 the mechanic have used them many times and the hard chroming is superb saw a st1100 that had done 105000 miles after the chroming and the forks still look new.
gutted tho the bikes down for 10 weeks as there that busy

for me anyway at last had a call today from the company i sent my forks off to , to be stripped re hard chromed, new oil, new bushes etc, they have done them, and in the post tommorow, for wedsneday delivery, took 7 weeks not the 10 great stuff, head bearings were done while waiting
so i can get this bike put back together and off the blocks, wow you will not believe how long 7 weeks are looking at the bike on blocks and being retired and not be able to ride

I pulled the rear rim off as I am now in Seattle area at my sister's house. While 4 days out from here I ordered another MotoZ Tractionator GPS tire and another TPMS since the last one left my bike on a rough section of the AlCan hwy (last 125 miles prior to Alaska). Tire came yesterday so I took rim to a dealer and they swaped out my MotoZ Tractionator Adventure and put the GPS on. My front GPS has just over 8,000 miles on it and looks fine. The GPS had around 7,000 and it would have gotten me home (another 6,000) if I hadn’t had it under inflated. The Tractionator Adventure has 3,000 on it and 1,500 of those were loaded heavy coming down throughout Canada. Then I took my AltRider covers off and cleaned my fork tubes. Then pried the dust seal down and used my seal tool to clean the seals as they were leaking again. I got crud out. They didn't leak until the Dalton Hwy got wet and the calcium chloride mixture stuck all over and was thick. Hopefully it will stop. If it does I will take the calipers off and clean everything with Brakleen out put new pads on. Which I have in the saddlebag. 20230803_154450.jpg
For 3,000 miles I think this tire is looking good.

Hi Boris,

all done mate, i ploded along, as you know took the bars off to loosen the top nut to aline the 2 fork clamps, got the forks in ok got them at the right level in the top yoke, torqued them up, but struggled with the torque on that top nut as you know, long story got it done in the end bars back on, got the wheel in calipers on to, what was great for me i,ve never used a torque wrench, but yesterday every bolt i put back on i torqued whitch for me was great, bare in mind i,ve never taken forks off before,
only thing to do today is mudguard on i,m done
i have thought long about those 14 inch red fork guards i bought from the USA and everybody saying they do more harm than good and the ones i had on before i never took off etc lazy, so now my forks are rebuilt with new hard chrome i,ll leave them uncovered i have the carbon guards as its a crosser but i,ll make sure the guards are taken off and the chrome is cleaned regular
also the guy that told me to send them to PITTED FORKS sain the hard chrome is so much better than the shit it came with from the factory
i saw a st1100 yesterday that had its forks done by them 8 yrs ago had done 110000 miles since to there wasn,t a mark on them so i,ll leave uncovered

also,
those 13" shock sox i dont think will work with those carbon fork guards any way, and if i say right leave the carbon guards off just put the 13"
sox on i can,t get my head around how they would work, because 13" means they cover all the chrome part whitch is what i wanted, so if you put them on and they sit on the bottom of the chrome part on the black foot section, they go all the way up and onto say 4-5" of the gold part thats where the main velcro is when your riding if the bottom is touching that lower black foot and the top is velcro,d high on the gold on compression while riding there going to buckle up and squish together as theres no where to go, i though that if you had long covers on the velcro should be around the bottom so the forks could compress into the top section with ease and the tube would stay straight, mmm

I channelled my inner MacGruber and fixed (?) a broken rear turn signal stalk with a snapper hose clamp. Those things ain't cheap man!

I placed a thin cut strip of electrical tape around the damage hole first, then installed the snapper clamp. I used finger pressure to snap the clamp as much as I could, then used pliers to get one last final "click" on the clamp. Seems like it's working so far! It's not wobbling anymore and is as secure as the other signal stalks now.

I was going to use some plastic weld and plastic strips, but I didn't want anything messy or patchwork-y looking. I think the clamp becomes unnoticeable after minute or so. The wife said it looks like it could've come that way, so that's the seal of approval ;)

I’ve repaired many a piece of fairing over the years using a product called Plastex. Works brilliantly.
For indicator stalks, I repaired one on a mate’s bike by using those plastic crack repair things that bury a piece of metal through heat, then grind that back & add Plastex & a final sand & paint. Stronger than new & holds well.

Stripped the final drive drain screw. Always been wary of those since 2011 and it finally bit me. Drilled and easy-outted it and was no big deal, but that alloy has to go. Going to get a quality bolt and replace it.

Riding it... so far in 24 days I'm at 8600 miles. Last few days been taking it easy. Had to change a front tire in a parking lot yesterday. Had it done in under 30 minutes. Going down the Oregon coast. Came into Eugene for the night as the guy I am riding with for the next two days needs a service done on his BMW. Blogging at Adventuresbyguy.com

Ok, not quite in one day...more like a week or so.

I sanded down perfectly good 2012 paint because I like yellow....

I did the Velocity Yellow (2005 Corvette) in base-clear. Created my own "World Crosser" style stickers and had them cut in vinyl by a local shop. I have attached the full size pdf file if anyone wants to have them. I didn't want to step on any Anniversary Edition guys' toes, so I painted the front fender and made the graphics in Gen 1 fashion.

Something to note. The lower edges of the tank were rusted under the rubber edging. Seems to be a common thing. I sanded out the rust as best as I could, painting in some etching primer before repaint. Before installing the rubber edging, I drilled a series of small holes along the bottom of edging. I coated the tank flange with Vaseline before installing the edging.
