Yesterday took out the new bike to see how it did in the dirt. Only 84* here in So Cal. I was impressed even with the stock tires (tourances), although they do need to be replaced with a better tire.

Did about 100 miles, about 40 of them on dirt roads through out the high desert, which due to the lack of rain are more sand then dirt. I did the clutch mod, but found that the throttle was to "snatchy" on the rough stuff that I hit and took if off until I got back onto pavement. It also did well in the curves.

The only problem was the bike decided that it was time to take a "nap" on a dirt section I was doing. The Altrider bars did there job and a little paint on the bars, and when I get a chance, I need to pull them out as they folded in slightly. A case of going down a road at speed, looking at the next road it crossed, and seeing that the one I was on stopped just prior and someone had dug a ditch for water drainage between the two.

At least when I got home still with a big smile on my face, the CFO looked at the bars and said I guess you had some fun today.

3 posts on the site and new bike and he has already dirt napped it....NICE...sounds like me. Ride it like you stole it brother. You can replace crash bars and side plastic a heck of a lot cheaper than valve covers, heads, and barrels on Bavarian adv bikes... ::021::

Wiring stuff:

PC8 in:

Custom switch from Jaxon - the switch lights red when off and green when on (if you've got a good ground)...long story.

Rigid Industries SR6

And...we have light!

Also ran a new lead for the Warm & Safe heated gear from the PC8 - no pics on that one, but was able to better position the plug with the 5' harness...

Enjoyed the install - first time I've wielded a soldering iron in anger since I was an electronics tech in the Navy (17 or so years ago) and by the last wire I remembered what-the-hell I was doing. Pretty clean install all things considered, and it was fun...and no smoke escaped (yet) so I guess I got it right...

Best part of the whole thing - Mom and Pops are visiting so I got some good Dad-time installing all this stuff today.

Nice job creggur. Especially the dad time. What's worth more than that!?

Oh, and I dirt napped today too Kmac. Wasn't carrying enough speed through a rough bit I have never been to. Front tucked and washed on me.
I swear I have better luck attacking on this beast than being real careful and trying to pick easy lines. M o m e n t u m is your friend when you weigh as much as an aircraft carrier. :)
Don't know how you guys do it with street fronts.

Looking good Creggur, and LOL at the grounding! I know what you went through.
Per your experience I tried it once then just ran a wire - thanks for the tip - prolly saved me a lot of headaches. The biggest problem was the black-mystical-voodoo-magic that is getting the damn mirror and switch lined up and tight at the right spot. I'm sure there's some easy trick to this that I don't know, but I'll be damned, I had to walk away from it a few times for fear of just throwing the mirror (and switch) out into the street.

Went for 'free' lunch at the HD dealer, then off for a ride. Oddly, none of the HD peeps wanted to come along.

Found a not quite abandoned air strip. It's an old ejection seat testing grounds with a very long test track, located up on top of a mesa where the nose sections of planes would be run down a long track and the ejection seats fired, to land in the valley below. No access, still gated and apparently quite a lot of equipment there. The security camera was nailed to a tree, so I have my doubts as to it's function-ability. :D Let's just say, I didn't climb the fence!

Then off to explore the town of Grafton, UT, now a ghost town since the lack of water made them move to Rockville. Grafton has been restored to some degree and is a free historic site. Pretty good window on just how tough it was back in the day.

Part of the sign.

After that I wandered by the cemetery, then up the road thru Springdale to Zion N.P. Still some snow up at the higher elevations. Pretty.

Then back home, stopping for a few ADV tags and to find a 'plastic man'

Local pizza place.

Then it was home to the wife and casa. Good to be home and enjoy the comforts of home and the love of a good woman. :)

A nice day of wandering the local roads after some decent lunch chow at Zion HD with proceeds to benefit the local charity.

fitted the wind deflectors - genuine yamaha ones, but disappointed with the cheapo plastic screws - have people replaces them? what is the thread does anyone know? I'd prefer stainless hex heads with a nylon washer - are they about M4 / M5?

anyway - not rode with them, but they look good!

I spent a bit of time, while the screen was off, looking at how i will mount a bar for attaching the sat-nav to the bike - think i might have a way! - i fabricated a mount on the v-strom which gave me a 22mm bar to attach the case to - just above the clock. I think i can re-use a lot of that v-strom mount, but shorten and bend the flat sections to attach it to the windscreen mounts - watch this space.....

The ten hadn't started since early november. no charger on it, only pushed around in the garage. It was a nice day, so I decided to fire it up. I was all prepared for a hard start and... wouldn't you know, it fired right up, no problem. Love this bike.

Found this in the mailbox this morning:

Went ahead and wired a lead to the PC8 that I installed yesterday:

And I'm more-than-stoked about the RI SR6 I installed yesterday - even in the bright sunlight you can see how much brighter the LEDs are than the high-beams. Better visibility OF me during the day, and better visibility FOR me in the dark:

It's been a very Electrical-Farkly weekend - and after the first test ride this morning - still no smoke escaped...

I'm calling it a win!

Bottomed my forks about 5 times.
Stopped and dialed a bit of preload and about 4 clicks of compression.

Bottomed out about 5 or 6 more times. Dialed in another dose of compression just to see if I could stop it.

Nope.

Gotta decide if I should spring-valve the bike for what I was doing. It was so much fun.

Neighbor friend went nuts and bought 3 MX bikes this week. 2011 Green, 2008 yellow, 2008 blue. (major midlife crisis) So him and his sons were on MX bikes and I'm on the Beast. We were "creating" a natural track on his 10 acres by simply repeating the route. The creek gets crossed 3 times and makes fantastic natural jumps. I'm bottoming when I hit the incline AND when I land after the air.

They were all blown away that my "streetbike" (they don't know much about motorcycles) had dirt bike tires like theirs and would rip along their little track. And they are still a bit timid at leaving the ground. Meanwhile I'm lucky I didn't blow my seals.

First time I've worn my old Tech 6 boots in years. It was a hoot.

I purchased a new black 2012 a week ago Friday without even driving one, based on everything I read. I was. Worried about having to tip toe it as I am 5'7" with a 29" inseam. When I got it home over a week ago it was 32 degrees and I rode it about 20 feet into my shed and the weather got worse in the days to come. Today it was sunny and 63 and I took my first ride and everyone was right, once under way, this thing feels light and balances amazing. It took a while to get used to sitting so high as compared to my 2000 Honda 750 Nighthawk, but after awhile I realized I could see over small cars much better and I wear a bright orange jacket, so being higher up. Should make me more visible. I love the torque and smooth quiet ride that I was afraid I would loose when I gave up the inline 4 Honda. When the Honda sells, I will. Be adding Jesse side cases and adding a windshield bracket and crash bars. My new favorite ride and I know after only 30 miles I made the right choice. My first bike was a Yamaha mini enduro at age nine. I have returned to my first love, Yamaha.

Installed new Yoshi exhaust. Question, is it normal for them to smoke for a short time. Too cold to ride so not sure.
