Hello all you proud Tenere owners. I could be in the market for a second hand S10, I am looking at bikes with 10000 to 40000 km on them. That made me wonder, howmany serious riders are out there who rack up some big numbers, i thougt I'd start a new thread, so if you showing some bigger than average miles, please let me know, and also, IF any major issues, what were they? If you done more than 30000 km, please drop a line.

I've had mine since August 5, 2011 and currently have just shy of 17,000 US miles (approximately 27,400 KM) in that time frame. Just got back from an 8300 mile, 20 day, 28 state plus Washington, D.C charity fundraising ride.

Let's see.....tires.......normal routine service, gas......tires......

That should about cover it except for the perma grin on my face!!!

::021::

No issues whatsoever. Love it!

I got mine on July 31st last year and have 12400 miles on right now with 8500 to 10000 more miles planned before the end of Aug with a 4 week ride to Alaska, Yukon and Northwest Territories.
The only issue was self induced, big rock flipped up made for cracked oil sump cover.
One new rear Tourance awhile back, new front next week. New set of K60's to be put on at Whitehorse, Yukon before hitting the dirt roads north of there.

Hi mate, 42,000k's on mine today, just about to turn 2 years old in August.

As for things going wrong :

Starter relay playing up after about a year.... I paid $120 for a genuine new part but it should have been replaced under warranty. I just didn't bother claiming for warranty on a cheap part.
A couple of spokes on the rear wheel came loose....I tightened them and haven't had a problem since. Free fix!
Final drive seal started to leak a couple of months ago but I cleaned the seal with a feeler guage and it's stopped. Free fix!
I've just replaced front and rear brake pads and wheel bearings... Rear pads needed to be done but front could have gone another 5,000k's.. I replaced the wheel bearings as a preventative measure.

Gone through about 12 rear tyres and 6 fronts totaling about $4,800 !!!! Bugger, but I have been running knobby style tyres the entire life of the bike. ::010::

Umm, that's about all I can think of at the moment.

Oh, another thing, the switchgear and throttle tube seems to clog up with dust making the throttle stick and the switches faulty. These are easy to clean as they can be pulled apart. I've had to do this twice in 2 years... Again, it needs to be a preventative mtc thing...

Uncle Dave, you do a lot of dirt? What did you have before the Tenere?

Pretty good reports so far...

Yes, I do mainly dirt apart from the transport sections to get to the dirt! haha

I had a GSA before, was a fantastic bike and a better long distance tourer but I'm a Yamaha man. The Super Tenere is a bit sportier than the GSA and is a lot easier to ride both high speed gravel and low speed technical stuff... Just the GSA was a lot more comfortable for riding all day. I did 1800k's in one day on the Super Tenere but oh my arse !!! :'(

Picked mine up Aug 5, 2011 and it currently has ~7600 miles.
Should be well over 10K in the next 10 days. Big trip planned.
The only issue I've had was the O-ring recall and the loose nut on the top triple clamp.
Just changed out my tires - could've gotten a few thousand more out the original's, but I like starting out with fresh tires on a long trip.

YOU are now my official Super Tenere spokesman.

In fact, I am just a "pretender" compared.

Your entire post would have been fitting for a KTM SE!

Amazing.

Uncle Dave & justbob got me.
21,600 miles / 34,700 km since last August.

Typical Yamaha: Keep changing the oil & filter, filling the tank, changing the tires when the air shows thru, and it keeps on going.

As of yesterday - July 5, 2012 - I have 18,260 miles (29,387 km) on mine. Took delivery of it August 3, 2011. Eleven months of pure enjoyment.

Had the cooked headlamp harness issue back very early in its life, but harness replaced under warranty and no problem since. In fact, the replacement harness has done so well I never even finished my greatly upgraded and beefier harness with ceramic H7 plugs.

Couple of loose spokes early on, but tightened 'em up and checked regularly since. For the most part all good and tight, with an occasional one that's not loose, but takes a bit of a turn. Wheels have remained true throughout.

Other than that absolutely *NO* problems, period. It's been flawless, and perhaps the best true "touring" bike - in that it truly can go *anywhere* - that I have ever owned. Much better, IMHO, even than my '06 FJR.

Bike came with Metzler Tourance EXP's, and that's all that's been on it. I'm on my 4th rear and 2nd front. Great tires and tire mileage in my experience. Stick like road race rubber wet or dry, too.

Checked air filter several times along the way, but always in good shape. Finally changed it for another stock OEM paper filter at around 16,500 miles (26,554 km).

Ditto the spark plugs. Finally changed them at the same time I changed the air filter, but they looked almost new, and could have easily gone another 16,000+ miles, no problem.

Still on original brake pads, front and rear. Have checked them regularly, and though they will have to be changed soon, they're still hanging in there.

Changed oil and filter at 100, 600, 1500, 3000, and approx. every 3000 miles thereafter. Nothing odd there. Used Yamalube mineral oil up until 6.000 miles, then switched to Mobil 1 20W/50 motorcycle oil. I use Yamaha OEM oil filters.

Have changed final drive fluid at every oil and filter change save one (the one before last), and used Yamalube final drive lube up to 6,000 miles. Have used Mobil 1 75/90 gear lube since.

It's an incredibly reliable, dependable, trustworthy machine. I'd ride mine anywhere, anytime, any distance from home with complete confidence it would get me be back safe and sound.

BTW, there's one forum member that has put 39,000+ miles (62,764 km) on his Super Tenere in 11 months!

Hope this helps!

My Tenere is 3 weeks old and I've put 1947 miles on it so far. I got it right out of the crate...I got the first foot traveled!! Just got my permanent license plate on today. I've installed an SW Motech engine guard and the Givi wind screen (5 inches taller than stock). Still waiting on luggage, extended brake & clutch hoses so I can install handlebar risers, GPS, etc... Hoping to win the lottery soon so I can afford all that stuff!! ::26::

More than 30,000 kms? ??? Crossed over 45,000 kms today. :D No issues. Had the fuel pump o-ring checked, (it was fine), changed the air filter and spark plugs at 26k miles, neither looked very worse for wear, regular oil changes and diff oil changes, three sets of tires, the oem EXPs being the worst on pavement or off, two rear K60 Scouts and just put the second front K60 on a bit back.

It's a Yamaha. Not perfect, but no bike is. But a damn sight better for reliability than most others, especially that German brand with the roundel. Any poseur thinks otherwise, go ahead and post up. You'll be my wash kitten shortly. POS bikes need major re-work and repair and the dealers rape the owners for simple crap. And before you post, call you dealer and ask for the PuMa letters for your bike. Bet you a buck there are issues no one ever told you about, but BMW knows are problems.

I'm very lucky to be able to ride as much as I do. Sorry about the rant, the wife has a GS and it was pissing me off, as it is often want to do when I work on it.

Good luck with the auction. Try to have someone check the bike out before you bid, just to make sure the condition is as described. Forums are great for finding a local that can verify such things. ::008::

Rudolph,

I waited to answer your post until I had access to my tracking spreadsheet, so I get the facts totally right.... I picked my Tenere up on August 11, 2011. As of today, it has a bit over 39,800 miles (64K kilometers) on it. Non normal maintenance type issues are below. My idea of normal maintenance is an oil and filter change every 3k miles.

14,935 miles: Fuel tank o-ring recall done. OEM tires worn out, replaced with Heidenau K-60s
16,847 miles: Rear spoke replaced, all other spokes torqued and checked
20,069 miles: Replaced melted connector and wiring on right headlight (warranty); Replaced leaking rear differential seal (warranty); replaced rear brake pads

The 26,000 mile service went great - valves did not need to be adjusted.

The Heidenau K-60s now have almost 25K miles on them. The front looks very good - maybe another 6-8k miles to go, though I prefer to replace tires at the same time. Rear will need to be swapped out in the next 2k miles. The bike is due for its first set of front brake pads soon too; will be done when the new K-60s go on.

Good luck in your search for an S10!

Thank you for all those details Chris. You have got good service out of that bike . My 660 tenere only has 16000 on it. Im one of those who realy have to set time aside on weekends for the wife and I to go for a ride. I envy you guys for managing all those miles on a bike. I have a 5 km run to work. I live on a farm, away from the homestead. But I go down there early winter mornings , apart from the cold, theres a few roos around. Besides all that, I have a work ute for private use!

I'm at 38,500+ Kilometers, pretty much almost half of that the last three weeks to Alaska and back. My bike will be 1 year old in a week or two.
