Even though in Portugal were are not allowed to bare arms as civillians, back in the 90's i had one issued that when in service in the Parachute Regiment. :p

It was the israeli Galil 5.56mm, much lighter and easier to use ( really easy to disassemble and clean, tough as nails ) than the H&K G3 7.62mm used by the regular units back in the day.

We also used the H&K MG 42 7.62mm, UZI 9mm and the Walther P38 9mm as handgun.

Here's a couple of pics of me and some guys from my platoon.

Nowadays the issued kit is a bit better....

The last photo is from a much younger Para :D ( on a mission the Central African Republic, those guys have been really battle tested ), and shows how much the kit has evolved in almost 30 years.
The FN-SCAR-L ( 5.56mm ) and FN-SCAR-H ( 7.62mm ) is now used, as is the FN-Minimi Mk3 ( 5.56mm and 7.62mm versions ) and the Glock 17 Gen5 9mm.

I never thought about it before, but I choose my guns/bikes with the same criteria. . . . They better work EVERY time. Don't need fancy.

The Galil was based on the AK-47, very sturdy and reliable too, it saw action overseas in Bosnia, Afghanistan and East-Timor ( mid-90's to early 2000's ), not prone to issues.

If i legally could, i'd have one ! :D

The AK is the one gun I will NEVER have. Too many good guys fallen victim to it. I can appreciate that it is likely the most reliable rifle in the world though.

My little pony... I picked up this old warhorse yesterday. Colt Model 1909 New Series. This one chambered in .45LC was made in 1915 and was sent to the British Army to fight the Kaiser. She has the British acceptance marks and stamps. Nice big old revolver. What looks like flaws behind the trigger guard and in front of the hammer are the stamps.1909.jpg

So, they stuck with the revolver instead of the 1911. I wonder if that was due to an easier transition since they had the Webley also.

Question: in the US can anyone walk in a shop (only gunstores?) that sells ammo and buy any caliber you’d like? Or do you have to have a gun registered in your name with that caliber?

The simple answer is yes. Some states require you to be 21 to purchase handgun specific ammo. In addition to gun shops, ammo is sold at many retail outlets like Walmart, some hardware stores and even some gas stations. A lot of ammo is sold online and delivered (most states) UPS or FEDEX. All you have to do is check the box on the order form that you are over 21. but for the most part it is very easy to buy, no permits or ID required.

Sierra, The British were desperate for any guns they could get, they essentially bought everything they could from Smith and Wesson and Colt. They wanted ones chambered in .455 Eley but took what they could get.

Yes, we can purchase any caliber that we wish to. No, the caliber does not matter. Yes, if you purchase a gun at a store/shop that sells guns, that gun is "registered" to you. But . . . . that "registration" has no legal restriction(s).

EDIT: I said "anyone", but there are age restrictions, mental health restrictions, and criminal history restrictions. Legitimate stores/shops are required to fill out proper paperwork and conduct background checks. And there are stores that sell ammo, but not guns. I've bought my last couple of pistols from a private citizen that has an F.F.L. (Federal Firearms License) He is required to follow the same requirements of larger stores/shops.

Huh. In my opinion, the 1911 is the superior weapon. But it does function differently than a revolver. So, I thought maybe since everybody knew how to use a revolver, they stuck with the hog leg due to familiarity.

I always thought the .45LC was a monster round. Until I found that it and the ACP were really close in power/energy 'cuz of the powder.

It depends on the State, a non resident can not buy ammunition in California.

Oké thanks for the answers guys. We cannot even possess an empty case of a caliber that is not on your permit. Unless there is a obvious hole drilled into it.

Similar here in Éire and it appears to be getting even more difficult to become a licence holder. At the moment I have 4 firearms. Silencer/suppressors are treated as firearms and as such valid reasons have to be filed when applying. Spent-ammo cases are treated as live rounds and ammo limits are attached to each licence. Usually about 100 per firearm. Again valid reasos have to be filed to increase this amount. Each firearm is a separate licence application. One of the conditions attached to my suppressor licence is that if I am using the suppressor in any area where I am licenced to use the firearm, I need to inforn all residents within a 2 km radius that I am shooting. Phone calls are accepted. Pictur me on a cold winter morning at 04.00 calling up people to let them know that I may be shooting in their area but they will not hear gunfire. A great way to make friends. Also att the time of application for a firearm licence a list of available land where the owners have given me permission to shoot is required and the firearm can only be use on these lands.

Stopped in a shop and looked at the Sig P365s yesterday. Night and day better than the CW9, like going from a beater car to something nice.

The Kahr is being replaced as soon as holiday and family stuff is taken care of.
